Maybe Next May

When I woke up the next day feeling really nervous. Cass and Rian were going to talk to Alex today. What if something happens? What if Heath tries to hurt them? I wouldn't be able to live with myself if they got hurt because of me! Okay Jack, deep breath, calm down, they’ll be fine.

I nodded and finished getting ready before running downstairs, grabbing my daily Rockstar, my skateboard, and running out the door with a ‘cya later’. As I went down the road I put in my headphones and just let my music calm me, taking small sips of my drink, hoping to make it last.

Of course by the time I got to school it was gone. I sighed as I threw it away and walked in. Right then I heard shouting, I recognized Cassadee’s voice. Oh shit. I shot down the hallway towards to noise and saw a group of people crowding around.

I pushed past them and saw Rian on the ground and Cass trying to help him up. I looked over and saw Alex, he had blood on his knuckles from hitting Rian and probably breaking his nose. Heath was right next to him and Lisa was on his other side, both were smiling.

“Alex? What the hell?” My voice was barley above a whisper as I kneeled down to help Rian.

“Ha! Looks like it’s your lucky day Gaskarth. Two nerds to beat up. Go on, do it.”

I was shocked, Alex really had done this. I stood up as he walked towards me. I looked into his eyes, trying to find even a sliver of regret, but found none. Was this pay back for running out on him yesterday?

“Look at how pitiful he looks!”

Heath and Lisa laughed along with a couple others in the crowd.

“Alex, please don’t do this.” I whispered, hoping Heath couldn't hear.

Next thing I know Alex is raising his fist, Cass is screaming at him, and it connects to my face. Pain shot through my face, I fell back onto the hard floor of the hallway and could hear my head crack when it connected.

“Oh my god!”

Cassadee’s scream was the last thing I heard before everything went black.
