Me Without You

Back to it.

I had been woken up at promptly ten am by and extremely punctual sister-in-law-to-be. I was ordered to dress and grab my things and to get my ‘scrawny pregnant ass’ into her car.
“May.” I whined as I slowly figured out where we were going.
“Shut up. We’re trying the damn dress on. It’s been ordered, made especially and I want to see mine too so this is happening.” I groaned again, earning a devil stare. “Jasey. You’re back in the country now. We have less than two months to make sure everything for this wedding is perfect.” I sighed in defeat and when May pulled up outside the dress store in the centre of town I grudgingly followed her in. All I wanted to was sleep or eat donuts. Either one was good. May spoke to the woman at the desk while I stared around the small front room. A few samples were set up on mannequins but apparently this shop specialised in custom jobs so there wasn’t a lot on show in the tiny front section.
“Miss Roberts?” I looked up to the woman beckoning to me and followed her behind the counter and through the door. Oh. My. Fucking. God. The back room was huge, complete with god knows how many mirrors and was draping with every fabric known to man. “I’ll fetch your dress form out back. I think you’ll love it.” I gave May a hopeful look and sat myself down on one of the massive white leather couches. May ran her fingers over one of the red dresses on a mannequin in the corner and beaming at me.
“No way.” I gasped. “Are those the bridesmaid dresses?” May nodded excitedly and I got up to examine them with her. “They’re gorgeous.” The red fabric was a deep colour and were strapless with a sweetheart neckline. The fabric hung down perfectly from under the bustline and I could picture the five girls in them. “I can’t wait to see you all in them.”
“Well we might as well get changed then, shall we?” An Australian accent called from behind me and I whipped around to see Jenna beaming.
“Jenna!” I ran over to her and pulled her into a hug. Tay, Cass and Jess appeared from behind her and I hugged each of my bridesmaids in turn. “I thought you were on tour?”
“I lied.” She winked as I hugged Jess.
“And I flew out from California with Cass yesterday.” Jess smiled heading over to the five mannequins. May tapped her nose and I rolled my eyes at her secret planning.
“In future I’d like to be notified about wedding days. “I laughed as a garment bag was dragged in from another room.
“Here it is.” The older woman hung the bag up on one of the railings and unzipped it, letting the long chiffon skirt fall out. The dress was similar to the bridesmaids, except white and the bodice was beaded with a sash underneath. “The skirt is made to allow for some room as the babies grow, we just need to check everything else.” The woman was clever. The back was done so it laced up, in case my boobs blew up any time soon, the sash was loose so as my stomach grew we could adjust it.
“Wow, good job May.” Tay whistled as we took it in. I was speechless. I had left pretty much everything up to May, including my dress and I was not disappointed. “Go on, try it on, Jay. I want to see!” I giggled and followed the woman into the dressing room so she could help me into it. The fabric slid over my skin easily and when she did it up you could hardly tell I was pregnant.
“Wow.” I gasped as she finished tying up the back. “It’s perfect.” I hitched up the skirt and walked out of the changing room and stood up on the stand. The five girls cheered and high fived May.
“I’m a fucking genius.” She yelled before instructing all the other girls to get their dresses on. The woman found me a pair of heels to try on with the dress and I internally squirmed over the idea of walking, pregnant, in heels. The girls emerged, squealing about how perfect they were and stood next to me. We stared at ourselves in the minutes for a good five minutes in silence. “Veil or no veil, Jasey?” I shrugged and May pulled my hair up into a messy low side bun and pinned a veil in that the assistant handed her.
“Veil.” Everyone said instantly.
“Definitely veil.” I smiled and May clapped her hands delightedly. We took a few cheeky selfies on our phones, swearing not to show anyone, before we got changed back into our normal clothes.
“May you are fantastic!” Cass squealed as we started walking down the street to a nearby coffee shop. We all hurried in and sat down at a booth after each placing our orders. May produced a notebook and pen and grinned evilly at me.
“We’re not done yet.” She wiggled her eyebrows causing me to groan and everyone else to laugh. “The pivotal thing about his wedding? The date. You’re getting married on Halloween and you know what Jack’s like.” I nodded, not really following. “I had an idea. A grooms cake.”
“A what?” Jenna was just as confused as I was.
“A cake for the groom.” Jess explained. “It’s just some stupid themed cake for the groomsmen. Like a football or something.”
“I was thinking about getting a Nightmare Before Christmas one made.” May mulled, looking to us for approval. “Except, I was also thinking that Jack and Sally should be your cake toppers.”
“Yes.” I slapped my hand on the table. “I said minimal Halloween decorations but that has to happen. We have to have Jack and Sally toppers. It’s a must.” The girls laughed at my sudden outburst of enthusiasm.
“Perfect. I’ll order them in.” She mumbled, scribbling it down in her book. “I’ve already ordered the wedding cake after I talked to you while you were in the UK. That’s all sorted. The decorations for the ceremony are all done, the suits are ordered, and the invites were sent out ages ago… I think we’re nearly done.”
“What about a registry?” I shook my head at Jess.
“We don’t need a list of gifts. We have everything.” I didn’t like the idea of being brought serious presents. I wanted seven more of those Darth Vader coffee mugs though.
The rest of the afternoon was spent in the party store on the north side, trying to find the perfect balance between Halloween and wedding. It was reasonably successful. The ballroom at the venue was large enough that we could pull it off without it looking like a goth show. I whipped my phone out as it buzzed and held it up to my ear as I drove home with Tay.
“Alex?” I questioned after looking at the caller I.D.
Jasey! I’m freaking out. I don’t know what to do!
“Shit, slow down. What happened?” He was panicking. I gave Tay a look and she quickly caught on, u-turning and heading for Alex’s house.
I can’t…
“Okay, we’re coming. Tay and I are five minutes away. Hold on okay?” I reassured him before motioning for Tay to go faster. I could audibly hear Alex hyperventilating and jumped out of the car before Tay had even parked it, throwing the door of Alex’s open.
“ALEX?”

@Evie
Ahh okay I get it :)

I really hope I didn't sound mean. If I didn't like your story I wouldn't have bothered. I just thought it was good enough for me to point out.

@we-forgot-monday
Hey :) I kind of wanted that to be the point. Jasey seems so perfect and everyone seems to like her so much that her downfall is how possessive she becomes over everyone. How they're her boys and no one else's unless she totally approves of them. I read a lot of fanfiction where the female is 'perfect' in a way and I wanted to try push that in a different way where her perfection and popularity is her downfall. For example, how she can't choose between Alex or Jack but still expects both of them to hang around for her and not move on, which ultimately all comes from her insecurity but we haven't got there yet ;) I'm starting to focus more on that side of the story now as its coming toward the end but I thought I should just put that out there and I'm really do apologise if it's unclear! The story did begin with a lack of character put into Jasey which I'm trying to slowly fix up through both the chapters coming up and the prequel.
Thanks for your comment!

I really don't mean to sound bitchy or mean but why does everyone like Jasey so much? What has she done? She seems kind of perfect, which seems kind of unrealistic. I haven't finished the story yet but does she have any flaws? Also why are they all her boys? Is no other female allowed to be a part of their lives but Jasey? This story is well written and there are certain parts of it that I really like, its just that those things don't really make sense. I really hope I didn't hurt your feelings or anything like that, because I am in no means a perfect writer, but I hope its like constructive criticism.

@Rebecca.Troy
Lets face it, there's never enough drama :)
