Me Without You
I left you, too.
I sat on the front porch of Alex's house watching the boys pack their lives into a bus. In just a few moments they would be gone forever. A shiver ran up my spine as a cold wind whipped around the house. I pulled my coat tighter against me and returned Zack's happy wave as he slid out of his parent’s car, bags in hand.
“Jase!” He yelled as he ran up the steps to scoop me into a hug. I snaked my arms around his neck and squeezed, willing to never let him go. “I'm going to miss you, Jay Jay.” I held back tears as Zack whispered into my hair. They were going. They were all leaving, off chasing their dreams while I was stuck finishing high school.
“Hey! Stop hogging my girl!” I smiled when I heard Jack yell over to us.
“To hell is she your girl!” Zack screamed back before smiling down at me and squeezing my hand. He understood how hard it was on me having them leave. Zack ran off to put his luggage away and I fell back onto the bench as Jack and Rian made their way towards me.
“Stop looking so sad. God.” Jack plopped himself on my lap, crushing me under his weight but putting a smile on my face none the less.
“How am I supposed to be happy about you all leaving me here?” I raised an eyebrow at Rian who pulled Jack off my lap. “I get to spend another year suffering in the education system while you run off and be rock stars.” I sighed and leaned my head against Jack as he ran his fingers through my hair.
“We'll come back.” Rian whispered, his statement sounding unsure. Jack looked over at him and then smiled down at me.
“Yeah, we'll come back kiddo. We'll kidnap you the day you graduate.” I giggled at the idea of a tour bus rocking up at graduation and four scraggy looking musicians picking me up off the stage and whisking me away.
“Guys! Come on! We need to leave.” Matt poked his head out of the door of the van and yelled to the boys sitting either side of me. The smiles instantly disappeared and I was squashed into a bone crushing hug. Jack quickly kissed my forehead before saying one last goodbye and scampering over to the bus.
“Going to miss you, munchkin.” Rian smiled as he matched Jack's kiss and ran off after his friend.
I sighed as Alex appeared from the bus and his excited smile instantly dropped from his face when his eyes met mine. I ran at my best friend and wrapped my legs around his waist, burying my face in his hair, hiding the tears that threatened. Alex's hands dug into my back as he pressed me as close to him as he possibly could.
“I don't want to leave.” He whispered as he rested his head on top of mine. I shook my head and jumped down from his waist, my hands sliding from his neck to rest on his chest.
“You do. This is your dream. You have to go.” A tear slid down my cheek as I tripped over my words. Alex took my face in his hands and pressed his forehead to mine.
“You know I'd be taking you with me if I could.” I closed my eyes, trying my hardest not to let any more tears slip. “I'll come back for you, Jasey. I will find a way back to you. When I'm rich and famous, I'll drive my fucking expensive ass car back to Baltimore, pick you up from you house and we'll run away to Vegas. Away from everyone, away from my stupid friends who are all so in love with you.”
“Except Rian.” I corrected Alex. He smiled at me and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me against his chest.
“Yes, except Rian. Zack and Jack can go suck a cock or marry a super model, but you are mine. I promise I'll come visit you. And as soon as you graduate you have to move out to California and live with me. You can stay in my bed forever. I'll hire a maid who can do everything for you and you just have to lay there and wait for me to come back from my awesome job and jump under the covers with you.” I wiped away the tears running down my cheek. “I will find you, Jasey Rae. I'll come back for you. I promise you.” Alex pulled away from me and pressed our lips together, earning groans from where the other boys were waiting by the bus. I gripped Alex's hand as he turned to walk towards the bus. He gave my hand a quick squeeze before unwrapping one of his chord bracelets and tying it around my wrist. Smiling the whole way, Alex jogged back to the bus, collecting several notes from each of the guys as he boarded the bus. The boys quickly followed him inside and a skunk stuck its head out the window, smiling at me.
“We took bets on who'd kiss you first.” I couldn’t help but laugh at the childishness of it all before breaking down into tears again as the four boys I couldn't live without drove off to live their lives without me.
