“Good afternoon, Mr Gaskarth. Please, take a seat."

“Good afternoon Bishop Miller. Thank you,” Alex replied. He was feeling a bit sick.

“You know why we’re here today. We’ve been notified that you were seen with another man who you seem to be very close with on multiple occasions. What do you have to say to this?” The bishop’s voice was low and scratchy. He was smiling tightly.

“I’ve just been helping him, as a good Christian should. He was in an abusive relationship before and I helped him get out of it. He is helping me at the services and he’s living with me because he’s got problems with going back to his old home, even now that his ex-boyfriend is awaiting trial.”

“So he’s homosexual.”

“Yes, he is.”

“Homosexuality is a sin, you know that,” the bishop said, looking Alex straight in the eye.
“Well yes, but I’m only helping him,” Alex replied. He was shaking just the tiniest bit.

“That “helping” consists of kissing others is new to me, Mr Gaskarth,” the bishop said sharply, narrowing his eyes.

Alex felt the familiar hot rush of panic. He tried desperately not to be sick in his mouth.

“I…”

“No, there’s no need for explanations, Mr Gaskarth. Our witness also told us that you and the other man were on the same confession box side and emerged shortly after, you both looking considerably flushed and aroused.” Alex did not succeed at not puking a bit in his mouth.

“I acknowledge that I made mistakes. Just please, give me one more chance,” Alex begged.
“I do not see why I should, you did not only break your pledge of remaining celibate, you broke it by getting with another man, which is a sin.”

“I don’t see why it is a sin, to be honest, but I apologize dearly for breaking my pledge. I love my job and I don’t want to give it up,” Alex said. He didn’t know why he had said the first part but he was praying he had been convincing.

“Well, with this attitude towards homosexuality, I’m afraid I have no other choice than remove you from your position as priest in Towson,” the bishop said, a small, mean smile appearing on his face.

“I don’t see what’s wrong with being with someone if you love them,” Alex insisted. He knew that he had already fucked up so he might as well go full-in.

“You do not understand it. The bible says it’s wrong so please leave this room now and we will notify you of the further steps,” the bishop replied with a sigh.

Alex did not say anything more, he got up and left. He said goodbye to the bishop and the secretary and left the building. He managed to contain the anxiety until he was sitting in his car. The panic hit him with full force, blowing him off his feet. He tore open the car door and puked on the pavement.

He felt a little better after and took a sip of water from a bottle he had in the car. He stayed in the car for a few more minutes, trying to calm down and took off when he was sure he would not vomit again.
