Alex

Alex came home to see Jack curled up in a tiny ball of sleep on the couch. The pillow was wet so Alex assumed it was because of crying. He himself felt sobs arising from deep inside him and decided to join Jack after having had a glass of water.

He got a blanket and lay down on the sofa behind Jack and spooned him. A few tears escaped his eyes but he indulged in Jack’s warmth and let his familiar scent calm him down.


A little while after, Alex woke up from Jack moving. They were now facing each other and Jack’s eyelids fluttered open slowly.

“Hey Alex,” he said with a small, weak smile.

“Hey,” Alex replied. His smile was probably equally bad.

“What’s wrong?” Jack asked as he noticed Alex’s red-rimmed eyes.

“I… I was at the bishop and he wants to remove me from my position here,” Alex answered, barely able to hold back his tears.

Jack just pulled Alex in for a very tight hug. “Let it out,” he said, he knew Alex was trying not to cry. Alex started to cry, hot tears flowing out of his eyes. He let out all the pain and fear, trying his best not to keep back any residue of them.

When he was finished with crying, he looked at Jack. “Why were you crying? And why are you home, shouldn’t you be at work?” he asked.

Jack reached behind him and got a piece of paper from the nearby table. Alex read it quickly and his eyes widened.

“You have a court date for Matt now?”

“Seems like it,” Jack said. He sounded numb, like he didn’t emotionally connect to it.

“Jack, do you want to talk about it?” Alex offered softly. “I’m always here for you,” he added.

“I… I’m afraid of seeing him again,” Jack confessed.

“Why? He’s in custody, there will be tons of police officers and you are safe. I promise.”

“I’m not scared of him physically hurting me. I’m scared of the memories it might bring back,” Jack explained in a mumbled voice.

“I promise, I’ll be there with you. I’ll be by your side and help if it gets too much. I promise,” Alex said, hugging Jack.

“Thank you so much… I guess that makes it a little easier,” Jack replied.

“You’re very welcome. Now, what do you wanna do? I think we could both need some distraction and comfort food,” Alex said.

“Can we watch a movie?” Jack asked.

“Sure. Which one?”

“How about Home Alone?”

“I don’t have that one,” Alex replied.

“Don’t worry, I got it on my laptop,” Jack said.

“Then go get it! I’ll make popcorn and prepare the ice-cream,” Alex said. He was already feeling a bit better.
