Beautiful Day (Alex)
Alex
In his dreams, Alex saw the boy with the light stripe in his otherwise dark hair. He looked sad and scared, there might even have been some tears on his face, but then something happened. Alex didn’t know what; he was too far away. But the lanky, tall boy started smiling widely and it amazed Alex, how beautiful his smile was. Alex smiled too in his sleep, his full lips curving up slightly.
The next morning, Alex got up to the sight of the big, white cat sitting opposite to the bed, staring at him. It was weird and a little scary but he was in a good mood; he had already forgotten about his dream but the feeling it had given him had remained with him. He stared the cat down, not willing to let some cat ruin his mood. The cat looked at him condescendingly and then curled up in a sunny spot to sleep.
Alex wandered to the door and opened it. It was a beautiful September day, the sun was shining brightly and dewdrops were caught on grass blades, reflecting the sunlight, looking like little diamonds. It smelled of freshly cut grass.
Alex picked up the newspaper laid out on the doormat before retreating into the house. He brewed himself a nice cup of tea and started unfolding the newspaper. He only had a confession scheduled for a bit later today (someone had asked him before the service the day before) so he had plenty of time to relax, touch up his already planned sermon for the day and maybe walk around a little to get to know his neighbours. It was a Sunday so people would probably be home; Alex planned on ringing the doorbell just to say hi and learn their names.
The cat joined him at the table. Sam meowed loudly to signal his hunger but Alex was concentrated on the newspaper. The Vatican had made some new agreements and there were rumours about the pope wanting to resign. Alex had learned wasn’t possible for the pope to resign; but if he wanted? He shook his head. Resigning.
He got up a little later to get some cat-food; Sam had started meowing so piercingly that Alex saw no other possible thing to do.
He recapped the service from the day before. In his head, he thought about the rows and then suddenly, the picture of the black-blonde-striped-hair boy came into his mind. The one who had sat in the very last row, alone. Looking down, his black hoodie’s sleeves covering his hands. The one who had looked sad when receiving the holy bread.
Alex wondered what might be up with him; he definitely lowered the average age among the church-goers. But why was he alone? All the others, mostly old ladies, had talked and laughed with their friends while leaving the church. And the guy? He had stayed for a little longer before leaving. And when he had left, he had looked stressed.
Alex promised himself to find out more about this man. He was kind of worried, but didn’t that belong to his job? To worry about his community? At least a little worry was normal, he thought. He just shouldn’t get too involved.
