Be Careful What You Wish For

Chapter 8: A Letter is Read

Jack opens his eyes to find that he is no longer in his room. He looks around and down at himself. Yep, he’s back at that girl’s place. He glances behind him and finds that that same blur of a girl is currently sound asleep on her bed. That’s different. Maybe...
Come on, Jack. You can do this.
He takes a step and then another and another. Good. Well, he’s able to move again. Jack turns to her desk. It would be nice if he could look through her stuff... Could he? He’s not sure if he’ll just go through it or if it will burn. Eh, it might not burn. His body may look like flames right now, but he’s pretty sure that he wouldn’t burn anything. If he did, the steps he had taken would have left sear marks on the floor, and there aren’t any. Hopeful, Jack goes over to her desk and carefully tries to touch one of the notebooks.
Jack almost lets out a cheer when he finds that he can touch it. He picks it up and looks through it. There is no name on the inside cover, and the pages are filled with... song lyrics? Either these are song lyrics or these are poems. Judging by the repeating stanzas and the cased instruments by her bed, these are most likely song lyrics. Alright, so she likes music. That doesn’t tell him who she is though. He picks up another notebook. This one looks different. There is no name again, but this one has notes in it. A couple of pages have different songs written down, and some of them have been crossed out. He looks at another page and sees some writing about how to play some parts. There are even some tab written down. Looks like she plays bass guitar. The other parts are not written in tab. It could still be a bass, but Jack figures that these parts might actually be for the other instrument that she has. He’s not sure what it is...
Jack shakes his head. None of that matters. What matters is that he finds something that he can actually use to find her. These notebooks have been no help. There has to be something-
His eyes spot an envelope under a picture frame. He quickly grabs it. No name on the actual envelope, but... Yes, there is still a letter inside. He takes it out and is about to read it, but then he stops himself. What if this is a personal letter? He’s invading her privacy already by looking through her notebooks. Is reading a letter too much? Jack let’s out a sigh. Even if he shouldn’t read it. What choice does he have? If he doesn’t figure out who this girl is or some way to contact her, he’s going to continue to suffer, and she might too. Jack tells himself that it’s fine. It’s not like he would do this if he had another choice. He let’s himself start to read.

Dear Selene,
I’m sorry that I left without saying goodbye. If I was able to, I would have. You know that our aunt and uncle hate magic, and of course they hate me for being unable to live a “normal” life. I wish that I was of age already so I could take care of you, but I also know that I would be unable to. Our aunt and uncle would make sure of that. I’ll do my best to visit on breaks and every weekend that I’m available. I don’t know if I’ll be able to though because of the two of them. I’ll try though. I’ll try my hardest. I wish you the best, Selene. I know that life is not going to be easy for you. I wish that those two would see that you belong here with me. I wish that they could see that you need to learn just like I must, and I wish that they could see that you need me. I need you too. I’ll stay strong for you though. Don’t be afraid to contact me. You know that I would stop what I’m doing in a heartbeat if you need me.
Stay strong,
Rose

Jack doesn’t even know this girl, but he feels himself almost about to cry. Jack, stop this. Look, you’ve found out what her name is. It’s Selene. It’s not much, but it’s better than what it was. Still though, Jack feels terrible that he read this. He keeps trying to tell himself that he had no choice, but it’s not working. He looks over at the picture that was on top of this envelope and finds the picture of a smiling woman looking back at him. He looks back at the letter in his hands and frowns. That picture is probably a picture of her mother. This girl must have lost her mother and father and can’t even see her sister. Jack puts the letter back where he found it and tries to distract himself by looking at what else is on her desk.
“Hello. Blue flame person?”
Jack quickly turns around to find that Selene is no longer asleep. He wasn’t expecting that, but he probably should have.
“Um, who are you? What are you doing here?”
Jack opens his mouth to speak, but nothing comes out. Fuck. Of course he can’t speak. This can’t all be easy, can’t it? He angrily tightens his fist. Is this ever going to end? Will his life ever go back to the way it was?
“I might be able to help us communicate.” Selene pulls out a pendulum and a cloth out of the end table. “We can use these.”
Yes! Finally they have some way to talk to each other! Jack excitedly starts to make his way over to her, but... Oh no. No. No. No! He’s slipping away. He tries to hurry. He feels like he’s running, but he doesn’t make it, and now.... Now he doesn’t know where he is. It looks like he’s in the woods, but there are plants and trees that he’s never seen before. He starts to look around, and almost bumps into two little girls that are chasing each other. Both of them have brown hair, and one of them looks to be about five years older than the other. A confused expression appears on his face.
“Rose! Selene! Don’t go too far,” he hears a woman call. He turns around to find the woman from the photo walking next to a man that is most likely her husband.
Is he seeing a scene from Selene’s past? He has to be. That’s the only explanation.
Before anything else can happen, Jack finds himself awake on his couch. He rubs at his eyes. What just happened? It was obviously part of Selene’s past, but why had he had that... What could he call it? Vision? Jack groans in annoyance. He may have found out her first name and even the name of her sister, but he’s left with even more questions. He starts to get up but then freezes in place. In front of him, he can see those same two ghostly girls chasing each other.

Notes

This took longer than I wanted, but there are two new chapters. They are on the shorter side. I think the next two are also going to be shorter too. I didn't realize that I didn't give myself much to work with when I planned these out. lol.
Anyway, I'm going to try to start the next chapter later if I'm in the mood to write.

I actually didn't plan on showing more of a reason of why she is the way she is, but it ended up getting written somehow. lol. I can see her reasoning for stuff, but she is still a bitch about it all. At least the have the summer together. I just love how Rose was taking lead with that. lol.
I'm currently trying to decide on if I'm going to add one scene or not, and then I should be able to plan out the next chapters better. The next one is easy, but I'll need to watch the pacing if the one scene is added. This week I have to write up the first draft of my short story for my writing class, so I'm probably just going to plan out the chapters this week.
And no problem! I actually find it so interesting to go back to my old stuff. I keep all of my old stories and ideas in case I want to reuse them or just look back. Fan fiction is what got me really back into writing as a sophomore, so no matter what, it's always going to have a place in my heart.

Finally! I was waiting for them to finally meet and now they have! But Selene's aunt is a total bitch. You're right about her now deserving a name. She can't just keep them apart! Ugh. Thank you so much!!!

@ALoveLikeNever_14
I actually haven't heard of that game. I've been playing a lot of FFXIV since around October. The early access is on the 16th, so I've been getting ready for that. I'm pretty good on everything though. I have one more job that I'd like to get to max level, but that's about it.
That Town of Salem sounds very interesting though.
And I hate her aunt too. I actually don't even have names for them tbh. Like, they don't need names. People like them don't deserve them.
I might write up the next chapter sometime tonight. I just need to draw up the next fur pictures for my project. This time it's silly cartoons of the four of them, and I'm very tempted to share them before they get colored. The designs are quite silly.

@QueenDes
Would that game be Town of Salem? Just a thoughtfull question. And I seriously hate her aunt right now! Doesn't she know how much suffering she is going through?! Ugh.

@ALoveLikeNever_14
Glad you like it! I've been busy lately since the expansion to the game I play is coming out soon, but mostly I really need to work on what I'm making for the band. I'm seeing them at the end of July, so I have to make sure that it's printed and ready by then. I might share what I'm working on with my brother when I get more of it done. :)
Just one more hurdle, so soon. The prologue will actually happen, so keep that in mind. lol.
