Be Careful What You Wish For
Chapter 9: A Murmur is Heard
Burning. Hurting. Ugh, when will this stop? Selene’s wrist is still burning, and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Now her head is pounding as well. This is just great. She still has no idea what is going on, and now she’s having difficulty focusing because of the pain she experiencing. She’s tried painkillers, but that hasn’t done anything to lessen this. Maybe her mother’s book will have something on the situation? Perhaps.
Since her aunt and uncle are not home, Selene makes her way up to the attic. If her mother’s book doesn’t say anything, she plans on looking around at everything else up there as well. Surely, there must be something. This has had to have happened in the past, and it was documented. Selene can really only hope.
Once she has her mother’s book in hand and she’s comfortable on the ground, she quickly starts to lip through it. Let’s see.... Tips on raising dragons. Elvish for dummies. How to do a Grand Tableau in Lenormand. What to look for in a robe. The blank rune is not a rune. What snacks to feed which mythical creatures.
None of this is helpful...
Selene groans and falls back. How can this book talk about what kind of apples to feed unicorns but say nothing about what Selene is going through? Perhaps there are some other books here that could help? She gets up and goes over to one of the boxes with her mother’s things inside. Let’s see... A dictionary of different kinds of fey. A tarot deck wish list. A book on making different kinds of tea... Yeah, none of these are going to help her.
A sharp pain strikes through her head like lightning. Her hand cradles her head. She hates this. Absolutely hates this. It was hard enough trying to pay attention in class today. The thought of class reminds her about her homework. She should probably get that out of the way before her headache gets any worse.
Selene makes her way back down to her room and opens of her math book and notebook. With pencil in hand, she starts to work out the problems with the formulas given to her in class today. The entire thing is quite relaxing, and Selene starts to forget about her head and wrist. Maybe after this, she can work on another cover. Working on covers relaxes her. Yeah, that sounds like a plan.
Fifteen problems later, Selene is stretching and smiling at her work. That didn’t take too long. She has always had a knack for math class. Selene wishes the same could be said for science though. Ha. Selene chuckles to herself. Of course the young witch is the one that struggles with science class. Maybe if they talked about the anatomy of a goblin, she’d get a good grade. She doesn’t currently know that, but she has a feeling that she would catch on pretty quickly.
After putting her books back into her backpack, Selene looks at her list of songs to cover in her other notebook. Hmmm... Wait. What was that? Selene scrunches up her eyebrows. Did she just hear something? She gets up and goes over to her door. Are her aunt and uncle home? She listens for a few minutes. Huh. She doesn’t hear anything. Maybe she was just hearing things? Selene shrugs. This whole magic predicament has put her under quite a bit of stress. She sits back down at her desk and starts to look at the list again.
OK, what was that? Selene gets up and looks around. She knows that she’s not imagining it. She can’t be. It’s so soft, but it gets a bit louder. Mumbling? What is this? What’s happening? There is this mumbling voice in her head. She can’t make out any of the words, but it’s definitely there. Selene doesn’t see or sense the presence, so... what does that mean? Does that mean that the next step of this is hearing the other? Does that mean that he’s hearing her as well?
She shakes her head. This will go away. Right? Right? Surely, this can’t continue. After five minutes of constant mumbling with few breaks, Selene groans. Whatever this is, it doesn’t seem like this is going to let up anytime soon. Maybe she should just go ahead and work on the next cover. She picks one without really looking and starts to get everything set up.
Before she starts to record, she decides to go with a test run first. The words fall from her lips, and the tune is on mark. Her fingers are strumming in time... One off key note comes out and then another. Selene almost wants to throw something. This voice is too distracting. She can’t concentrate. She puts her bass down and flops onto her bed.
Now what is she going to do? She already finished her homework, and now she can’t record a cover like she wanted to. She could always go outside, but she’s not sure how much that will help her since it’s really not going to be quiet. With a groan, Selene angrily stomps back up to the attic and then brings her mother’s book back down to her room. Maybe she missed something. There has to be something here. There has to... Please?

I actually didn't plan on showing more of a reason of why she is the way she is, but it ended up getting written somehow. lol. I can see her reasoning for stuff, but she is still a bitch about it all. At least the have the summer together. I just love how Rose was taking lead with that. lol.
I'm currently trying to decide on if I'm going to add one scene or not, and then I should be able to plan out the next chapters better. The next one is easy, but I'll need to watch the pacing if the one scene is added. This week I have to write up the first draft of my short story for my writing class, so I'm probably just going to plan out the chapters this week.
And no problem! I actually find it so interesting to go back to my old stuff. I keep all of my old stories and ideas in case I want to reuse them or just look back. Fan fiction is what got me really back into writing as a sophomore, so no matter what, it's always going to have a place in my heart.
