Thanks To You

Jack POV:
The next day at school I had my headphones in and my head down as I walked through the halls. I didn't want to see anyone, and I didn't want anyone to see me. I just wanted to be invisible. What if Alex told everyone? What if he thinks I’m disgusting? What if he turns into one of the kids who is going to beat me up? I felt more tears coming on and tried to keep those thoughts out of my head and held back the tears as I walked into my first hour and took my seat in the back.

I watched as Alex walked in, his eyes met mine and I quickly looked back down at my book, pretending to be very interested in whatever was written here. As class began and the teacher started her lecture, a note flew onto my book, I glanced over at Alex. He gave me a small smile and motioned towards the note. I sighed and opened it up.

Jack,
Please don’t be mad at me for leaving yesterday.
I’m just really confused right now and wasn't
expecting that to happen. Don’t worry, I wont
tell anyone. I would like to continue to be your
friend, if you’ll let me that is. I understand you’re
probably hurt and I’m so sorry. Let’s hang out
after school and we can talk about it. Okay?
I’ll be by my car outside after school. I’ll wait five
minutes. I hope you’ll forgive me, or at least give
me a chance to explain.
Alex

I couldn't help but smile at the note. I was about to write back when the note was snatched from my desk. Our English teacher stood above me, glaring as she read the note.

“What do we have here? Note passing in class? Mr. Gaskarth, Mr. Barakat, I want to speak with you after class.” with that she crumpled up the note and threw it away.

Everyone was snickering and I felt my face turn bright red. I glanced at Alex and saw red covering his face as well. He shot me an apologetic look before getting back to work.

Might as well…. I thought before getting back to my own work.

Alex POV:
I walked into class right before the tardy bell rang. I saw Jack sitting at his desk. Our eyes met and he quickly looked back down at his book. The closer I got the worse he looked. He looked as if he hadn't slept in days. Dark rings were under his puff red eyes. He had been crying… I felt horrible. Once I sat down I got out a pen and paper, scribbled down a note and tossed it to him. He read it and I swear I saw a small smile on his lips. Yes! Before he could reply, the teacher took the note and asked us to see her after class. Awesome… I thought as the class laughed at us. I shot Jack an ‘I’m sorry’ look before trying to do my work.

After class, me and Jack walked up to her desk. “I expect to not see this happening again. Do I need to move the two of you away from each other? Does there seem to be a problem here?” She asked, looking between us. I didn’t answer, I wanted Jack to. Then to my shock, he did.

“No ma’am. Everything is fine between us. I’m sorry for interrupting your class and not paying attention.”

The teacher looked just as shocked as I’m sure I looked. “W-Well then… That’s good. You two are free to go. But this better not happen again! Understand?”

We both nodded and walked out. Before I knew it Jack was gone. I didn't even get a chance to talk to him.

After school I stood by my car, nerves tugging at my stomach. Was he actually going to come? Had I really messed up that bad? I knew Jack was self-conscious and had been bullied at his old school. Maybe this happened before, and that’s why he was bullied before. I made a pact right then and there that I would protect Jack, no matter what. Right then I felt a hand on my shoulder and jumped. I turn and saw Jack standing there, his eyes wide. I had probably scared him because I had jumped.

“S-Sorry Jack. I didn't hear you coming.”

“I guessed…. Well… ready to go?” he asked, not looking at me.

I smiled, “Thanks Jack. You won’t regret it, I promise.” I motioned towards me car and we both got in.

I had absolutely no idea where to go, but I did know we needed to be alone so there wouldn't be any interruptions. So I drove to my secret hide out. Once I parked, Jack looked around, confused.

“Do you trust me?”

He thought for a second then nodded. I laughed a bit.

“Come on.” I said and got out of the car.
