Chapter inspiration: Howlin’ For You – The Black Keys

The last hour of the Virginia Beach Warped show was coming to a close. Vinny and Victoria sat back in the tent, cracking open a beer after the long, hot day. They were surprised that not many came by the tent today, most were just wandering around. It was a little sad, as much as they were crazy, Vinny and Victoria liked seeing the fans.

Victoria started folding a pile of white shirts when she heard her name: “VICTORIA!” She glanced up, seeing Jenna bounding towards the tent, shoving people out of her way. “VICTORIA!!!” She shrieked even louder.

The dark blonde met the other girl outside the tent so she wouldn’t cause more of a disturbance. “Hey, hey, calm down. What’s going on?”

The Aussie girl took a couple breaths. “Victoria, I’m so sorry. I didn’t want to tell him, but he made me. I feel so―”

“Jenna,” Victoria tried to snap her back, holding her shoulders, “what the hell is wrong?”

“I told Alex about what Jack said to you,” she said flatly, making Victoria’s eyes widen. “I’m sorry, he made me tell him. He was so worried and I made him promise not to do anything stupid after, but he lied. It’s happening right now in the front of the first lot.”

Victoria furrowed her brow. “Wait, what’s happening?”

“Alex and Jack are fighting.” Jenna stared at her, worry filling her insides.

The dark blonde swallowed the lump in her throat. “I have to go,” she said quickly, running away and ignoring the calls of her name in the distance.

She sprinted fast, the wind whipping past her and making her hair fly at all angles. She didn’t apologize to the people she pushed out of her way. She needed to get to the lot―fast. Her legs were giving out on her, but she pushed herself to move even quicker.

She shoved the security at the gates out of her path, making her way to the lot. She spotted them then, the bestest of friends, throwing punches to one another. “ALEX! JACK!” She screamed at the top of her lungs, but their fighting didn’t stop.

She reached them finally, almost being hit by Alex’s fist as she pulled them apart. They looked back from one another then, apologizing to Victoria about almost colliding their fists into her face. But she didn’t want to hear that now. “What the fuck, guys?!” She scolded, gesturing to both of them. “What the fuck is this? Twilight?”

They both avoided her gaze, looking down to the ground.

“ANSWER ME!” She shrieked.

“Sorry,” they chorused.

“No,” she pointed to both of them, “sorry doesn’t cut it. You’re both best friends. Why the fuck are you fighting?”

“We just …” Jack’s voice trailed off.

Alex sighed. “We both like you, Victoria.” He then locked narrowed eyes with Jack. “Even though I told everyone to back off at the moment.”

“Excuse me, but since when did you own me, Alex?” He stayed quiet as she crossed her arms over her chest, becoming furious. “So what the fuck do you expect me to do? Choose between both of you?”

“Kind of,” Alex said it as if it were obvious.

“Okay, you know what?” She looked to both of their confused faces. “Fuck both of you. I was happy with my life before you two started having these ‘feelings’ and shit. We didn’t need any of this. You both ruined it. I don’t need any of you. I can be happy on my own, so fuck both of you and wanting me to ‘choose.’”

They were surprised that she kept going: “You,” she pointed to Jack. “I was happy having you as a good friend. You helped me so much two years ago and I was happy to see you again when I was hired to work for the band. Our friendship was always the best, so I don’t understand how you seemed to develop these ‘feelings.’” Her words made the skunk-haired boy look away.

“And you,” she then turned to Alex. “Fuck you too. Sure, we flirt a lot and yes, I’m a hypocrite who will always really like you, but fighting over a girl with you best friend? Who’s to gain in this?” They didn’t make a sound. “Exactly. You’re both pathetic.”

Jack gulped. “So what do you want us to do? Pretend?”

“Okay, no lie, you lost me at, ‘I will always really like you.’” Alex joked, making both Jack and Victoria frown.

She hit Alex’s arm. “Well sorry to break it to you, because right now, I don’t like either of you.” She didn’t care about the sad looks they gave her, because she was angrier than ever before at them. “You’re both in the same fucking band, get it together.”

She looked to both of them, scoffing under her breath and walking away. She narrowed her eyes as Alex grabbed for her arm, muttering, “C’mon, Hamilton―”

She snatched her arm away. “Don’t call me that.”

As much as it pained her to walk away from both of them, she did it anyways. She wasn’t a prize to be won.

Never.
