Let the Floods Cross

n i n e t e e n

Liezel stared at her boyfriend in disbelief, dropping both of her arms on her sides dramatically. Alex opened his mouth to speak again but she shook her head at him. She did not want to hear his apologies because it meant nothing. If he really were sorry, he wouldn’t be doing what he had been doing.

“How long, Alex?”

Alex tightened the sheets around his body and walked over to her. He held out a hand for her but she backed up against the wall. She glared at him as she fought the tears that are cascading down her cheeks.

“Liezel…”

“Answer the fucking question.”

He gulped, staring at his bare feet before looking back up to her.

“I love you, Liezel.” He whispered.

Liezel pursed her lips as her eyes wandered over to the other woman on the bed. The blonde is still staring at the scene in front of her, a look of apparent shock on her face. Kaya quickly averted her gaze from the athlete as soon as Liezel glared on. Alex followed his girlfriend’s eyes and scowled when he noticed that Kaya is still here.

“Get out of here.” Alex said to Kaya calmly.

The blonde shook her head at Alex in disbelief but got up from the bed nonetheless. Liezel looked away quickly when she noticed that Kaya is not dressed at all. She is trying to fathom what is going on in front of her. Her boyfriend cheated on her, something that she never imagined would ever happen. Alex would never cheat on her because his love for her is unconditional. She trusted him enough to never do this to her.

She is more shocked at the fact that Alex chose to sleep with Kaya, of all people.

When Kaya left the room to collect her clothes in the living room, Liezel pointed her index finger out at her cheating boyfriend.

“I want to know why you cheated on me and how long this shit has been going on!” Liezel hollered, wiping at her eyes with her other hand.

Alex shifted in his position awkwardly.

“ANSWER ME, YOU SON OF A BITCH!”

The singer shook in surprise at the volume of her voice. He has never seen Liezel so distressed and furious in his life. It is the worst knowing that he is the one who caused her the pain and the anger.

“Ever since you left for the French Open earlier this year.”

Liezel furrowed her eyebrows at him.

“Alex.”

He opened his mouth to reply but she cut in right away.

“The French Open was in May.” She said calmly.

“I’m sorry, Liezel.” Alex apologized.

She shook her head at him.

“No, what I don’t seem to understand is how you can go around behind my back and fuck Kaya Lockheart for five months. Kaya Lockheart, I repeat. At least have the courtesy of fucking someone with more substance if you are going to cheat on me.” Liezel shouted, pointing her index finger out at him again.

There was a silence that followed. Liezel is too busy trying to collect her thoughts through her anger, and Alex did not know what to say to that. He just got caught prolonging the biggest mistake of his life and there is nothing he can say to justify what he did.

Before any of them spoke again, the bedroom door opened, revealing a teary Kaya. The blonde stared Liezel down, similarly pointing an index finger out at the athlete. Her hazel eyes narrowed despite the falling tears.

“I am not going to stand outside and listen to you talk about me like I’m trash. You think I did this because I am a slut?” Kaya yelled.

Liezel scoffed.

“Actually, hun, you’ve been sleeping with my boyfriend since May, so yeah, you are a fucking slut!”

Kaya pushed the door aside and confronted the tennis player. She stopped just when she is mere inches from the woman.

“I am not a slut. Do not mistake my affair with Alex for me whoring myself out to him.”

“Then how do you justify what you have been doing then? Please amuse me.” Liezel laughed darkly.

Kaya briefly looked at Alex before turning back to her.

“Had it ever cross your mind that I am actually in love with Alex?” Kaya’s voice sounded so hollow when the volume of her voice intensified and accrued.

Alex shifted uncomfortably as he tried his best to avert his gaze from both women. He had never wanted this situation to happen, and now his worse nightmare is coming true right in front of his eyes.

You falling in love with him? Oh please, the only person you will ever fall in love with is yourself and your second rate country music career and your stupid family fortune and that stupid fashion line you thought you created!” The tennis player dropped both hands to her sides, shaking her head.

Kaya bit her lips as angry tears continued to run down her face.

“I love him more than you ever will! At least I appreciate him and his presence. I’ve never once taken him for granted. All you do is leave him alone and leave with his band mate, might I add? How do we know that you haven’t been fucking Zack?”

Liezel opened her mouth to defend herself but Alex stepped up behind Kaya before she had the chance to speak. Alex locked eyes with his girlfriend for just a few moments before he cleared his throat.

“You should leave, Kaya.” He said quietly.

Kaya turned her head to look at him. Her lips quivered as she stared him down in disbelief.

“Alex, are you going to stand there and let her tear me apart like this?” Kaya asked, almost pleading.

The singer did not say anything but Kaya didn’t need him to say what is on his mind. She already knows.

“It’s always been Liezel isn’t it? No matter what she does to you and what I do for you; you will always choose her.”

Alex did not say anything nor did he even attempt to put in any effort to do so. He just watched as Kaya stormed out of the bedroom and out of the loft. Honestly, he didn’t exactly care about her. She was merely a distraction and partially a friend who gave him the occasional pleasure when Liezel was not around.

Her departure left him alone with Liezel and now he needed to do whatever it takes to make this right.

“I promise I will never do that again.” Alex murmured.

Liezel scoffed.

“I don’t give a shit; fuck her again, don’t fuck her again—whatever.”

“Don’t say that!”

“Actually, I just did because you and me, we’re done.” Liezel turned away from him and opened the closet door.

Alex placed a hand on her shoulder but she roughly brushed his hand off.

“You can’t mean that…” Alex trailed off.

“And this time around, I am not crawling back to you and fighting to make up with you. We are over for real.”

“Liezel…”

“Alex, I know that you are a rock star. You have that persona and I’ve always looked past that. But I actually did not believe you would do this to me. You know how much I hate infidelity.”

Liezel pulled down a large duffel bag from the top shelf of the closet and dumped it open on the floor. She reached for the hangers and pulled her clothing items down from them. When she was done, she stuffed her clothes inside the duffel bag.

“Don’t act like I was the only one who screwed up, Liezel Beckett!” Alex placed his hands on both sides of her shoulder and turned her around.

The tennis player raised an eyebrow.

“Oh yeah? I wasn’t the one who cheated.” She muttered.

“But you have been ignoring me! I’m always your second choice while you’ve always been my first!”

“Oh please, it’s not like I went around and slept with Berdych behind your back!” She spat out.

Alex’s nose flared.

“You wanted to, didn’t you?”

Liezel rolled her eyes. Right now, she wants to hurt him as much as he did to her. She wants to make him pay for everything he had done.

“Yes, because you know how easy that will be. But I didn’t, you know why? Because I thought that my boyfriend will be waiting for me at home with open arms and hopefully that marriage proposal. And speaking of the proposal, I was going to wholeheartedly agree to the proposal. I was going to agree to marry you! Can you believe that?”

Alex opened his mouth and then closed it. He felt his own tears cloud his vision; Liezel was going to accept his marriage proposal. She could have been his fiancé by now if he hadn’t done what he did. If she had not caught him in the act of his infidelity, she would not have known, and they would be engaged. The timing of everything had been wrong, but most importantly, what he had been doing to her was wrong.

Liezel finished her packing and pulled the duffel bag over her shoulder. She pushed past Alex, making a beeline for the door. The longer she stayed in here with Alex, the lower her heart will sink. She wanted to stay somewhere far away from him and cry her eyes out at all the things that had been happening.

All this time, she had been feeling an immense amount of guilt over taking him for granted. But while she was fretting over that fact, he had been unfaithful to her. She blamed herself for everything that had been happening to him when this whole time, it happened because of his actions. He took his anger out on her because he was angry with himself for having an affair with Kaya.

Liezel is too disgusted with Alex to be staying in this room with him.

“I love you, Liezel, please do not walk away from me.” Alex pleaded.

“If you loved me as much as I thought you did; you and that blonde bimbo would never have been a thing!”

“Where are you going?” He asked helplessly.

He followed her to the living room and watched as she made her way to the front door.

“Where do you think I’m going?” She tested.

Rolling his eyes, Alex sighed.

“I’m betting that you are heading over to Zack’s because apparently he understands. So he’s going to be your knight in shining armor; or is he going to replace me as your boyfriend?”

Liezel laughed bitterly, turning to look at him.

“I find it most hilarious that you are worried about me and Zack.”

“You know he was in love with you in elementary school?”

“Actually, I didn’t. But it does not matter. Oh, and yeah, I’m going to his place right now—maybe just to spite you.”

Alex stormed his way to her, angrily shoving her back against the front door.

“How can you even think about moving in on my best friend, my band mate? Maybe you are just as bad as I am!”

Liezel shoved her former lover off of her. She wiped at her eyes one last time, opening the front door. Pulling her coat tighter against her body, she took a few steps outside. Just as she is about to leave, she decided to make one last comment.

“By the way, I find it most ironic that you have been worried about Zack and me when your primary concern regarding me should’ve been Tomas.”

“So you did want to sleep with him…”

“Oh, trust me, I do. If I wasn’t so in love with you, I would’ve had what wehad with him.”

And with that, Liezel dragged her things inside her car.
