Let the Floods Cross

t h i r t e e n

“Please tell me that Detective Kovacs is here.” Liezel pleaded when she entered the precinct.

Detective Iverson and Detective Jacobson greeted the tennis player as she walked toward them. They gestured for her to sit down on Ace’s empty desk, which answered her question. The female detective is nowhere to be seen, to her absolute dismay.

“Are you here for her, or do want to drop by to check on us and this case?” Iverson asked.

Liezel laughed.

“Of course I’m here to make sure you guys are making progress on this case.”

Jacobson pouted and shared a glance with Iverson. They shared a similar look of childish pouting before turning back to her, both at the same time.

“She’s lying! She only cares about Kovacs.” Jacobson said.

“She doesn’t care about us!”

“Haha, guys, you mean the world to me, you know that!” Liezel frowned at them, extending her arms out in attempt for a hug.

Both men shook their heads at them in disbelief and rolled their chairs over closer to her.

“So what’s up, Beckett?”

Liezel sighed loudly, unsure of how to answer the question. She does not want to get her private life all over to everyone but her worry and lack of moral support brought her here to this point. She needs to talk to someone, someone she can trust and depend on. Maybe she needs someone who is willing to give her genuine advice on how to get her life back together.

“Iverson, you have a wife!” Liezel exclaimed in realization.

The two male detectives shared a look before laughing.

“Liezel Beckett, if you wanted a chance with me, you should’ve hollered seven years ago.” Iverson said teasingly.

Liezel rolled her eyes.

“Detective, I was barely eighteen seven years ago.”

Iverson laughed as his colleague tapped on his shoulder jokingly.

“No really, what’s the matter?” He asked.

Liezel did not know what to do with her life. It is getting very hard for her to confide in someone because everything she thought she could depend on let her down. Alex is the first person she would confide everything to, but the conflict is with him and he is nowhere to be found. He wouldn’t answer his phone.

Jack has decided to take Alex’s side this time around and not take the initiative to find Alex. He did not do much to make her feel better. Zack is also unwilling to help, although more sympathetic than Jack. Alike his two band mates, Rian had been more than willing to comfort her and make her feel better. However, she is sure that he will not rat his friend out for her. She will not depend on it.

Since she is trying to avoid tennis practice today, she has been dodging Hale’s calls all day. She cannot go to him for advice because of that sole reason. He would’ve been helpful and caring though. The only person left to actually give a damn about her in Baltimore would be Ace. It is sad that Ace isn’t even here when she is needed.

It is even sadder that Liezel can’t bring herself to truly depend on other people outside of Alex’s friendship circle, with the exception of her hitting partner. Her life has always been built around her tennis playing and she did not have time to make friends. Keeping friendships and connections is hard work for her, but Alex helped her keep his friends around her, and thus, making them the only true friends she could rely on.

For once, she needs a different circle of people to trust and depend on. She has been working on this case with these detectives for almost a week, and they have made some interactions and conversations during their job. It wouldn’t kill for her to make some more connections in case something like this with Alex happens again.

She needs someone to turn to in case no one else wants to help her, alike this time.

“Iverson, your job is very demanding; how do you balance with being a detective and being committed to your wife?” She finally asked.

The detective scratched at his facial hair and hummed in a thoughtful matter. He looks to be taking his time to collect his thoughts and provide the athlete with a good answer. It is a good sign for Liezel so far.

“Well, let’s see, the most important thing is that she understands how demanding my job can be. It is very hard to be married or even connected to a cop. They have to go through everyday wondering if we are going to return home alive. But they have to face it and understand that we have to do what we have to do. Everyone has chosen to do something with their lives, so why not let them do it?”

“But how do you preserve your relationship with your wife?” Liezel interjected.

Iverson opened his mouth and continued.

“For one, we have good sex.” He noted, ignoring the laugh from Jacobson.

Liezel laughed, nodding in agreement. Good sex is always the solution to a horrible altercation with a spouse.

“But most importantly, we find time for each other. We remind each other everyday that this marriage is going somewhere and that it means a great deal to the both of us. I show her that I love her everyday, and try to tell her that. She does the same for me, which keeps me going. I think it works in any relationship. You have to love the person and they have to love you back, but you need to remind them that you do, every once in a while.”

She is surprised that Ace’s usually goofy partner had so many important things to say. Everything he has said was insightful and surely helpful. It made her think about her relationship with Alex. It had been her fault that she allowed herself to leave Alex in the back burner for her own tennis career.

Her tennis has always been her first priority, with Alex in a close second, but it should have been the other way around. Alex loved his music career, but she could tell that he always regarded her in the highest place. She had been with him before his band kicked off, and he had her around to keep him grounded and remind him of his true identity. She meant the world to him, and in return, she chose tennis over him.

It does not seem fair to him that she is using up all her time and energy on tennis training when she should be trying to keep her relationship together. She should have fought harder for Alex, because he would’ve realized that her love for him is serious and long-term.

“Thank you so much, detective.” Liezel murmured as she thought long and hard about her situation with Alex.

The bearded detective waved the tennis player off as a response. She was about to talk again when the buzzing of her phone took her attention away from what she wanted to say. Sighing in exhaustion, she prepared for Hale’s third phone call of the day. When she took her phone out, her eyes widened in mild shock.

It is not Hale, but Alex. In happiness and surprise, she quickly answered the phone.

“Alex.” She spoke.

There was a brief silence on his end of the line. She waited for him patiently until he started speaking.

“Liezel, are you home right now?” Alex asked somberly.

Liezel closed her eyes at how exhausted and sad he sounded. She felt guilty for putting him in such a state. It is not fair to him that she is putting him through all of this, just because she is hesitant about dedicating more time to him.

“No, I’m at the precinct right now.”

“What the hell are you doing there? I thought Ace didn’t need your help anymore.” His usual chirpiness could not be identified.

“She didn’t, I went to check on the whereabouts of the case.” She replied.

“Oh.”

“Alex, are you okay? I miss you.”

She had not seen her boyfriend for three days and the thought scared her a bit. Alex always ran off after their arguments, but she always found him at Jack’s that next morning—at least for the disagreements that weren’t severe. This time, however, he ran off to a mystery place for three whole days without contacting her. It is different than how they used to run things. She prayed that it isn’t a sign that their relationship will be over.

“Liezel, I’m ready to come home.” Alex admitted.

She heard a soft side of him that only she is able to witness. He is so vulnerable at this moment that she wanted to tell him that she would commit to him. She wants to spend the rest of her life with him and she will tell him that. Even if things are not set in stone right now, she will fight for them.

“Please come back, babe, I love you.” Liezel pleaded.

She said it so quietly that she knew the detectives wouldn’t be able to hear her. They moved away from Ace’s desk after Liezel picked up the phone. It seems like they are doing some paperwork at their own respective desks.

“I think you need to get back home first.” Alex said.

Liezel bit her lips, in fear that he will deny her request.

“How come?”

“I kind of left my keys at home, so technically, I kind of locked myself out of my own loft.”

Liezel rolled her eyes but managed to smile. She knew that Alex would often do something silly like this. If she were not around to keep him in check, he would never survive without her. Once, he left his keys at home when she was in France, and as a result, he had to stay with Jack until she got back.

Ever since then, Liezel made it a necessity that Alex’s best friends each have a set of keys to their loft. Despite the fact that it will evade on her privacy, she needed to make sure that Alex could get home if he lost his keys without her around. The memories of Alex and his instances made her ache and crave for his love. It made her want to fight harder for everything to work between them.

They worked so well together. She took care of him while he loved her like no other. They both complimented each other so well, both understanding each other so well. There isn’t anyone else for her but Alex. She will fight for him.

“I will be on my way now, Alex.”

“Thanks.”

“Yep, of course.”

She hung up quickly as she got up from the chair. Both detectives looked up at her when she did that.

“Is that your boyfriend?” Jacobson asked.

“Yeah, I think we’re going to be just fine. Thanks Iverson!” She said quickly as she started toward the door.

The detective cleared his throat, prompting for her to stop. She glanced at him with her eyebrow raised.

“Aren’t you going to ask us how the case went?” Iverson asked.

Smiling, she shook her head.

“Did you guys find the killer for Breck’s girlfriend?”

Grinning, Iverson nodded.

“Turns out, Breck’s bisexual girlfriend was actually cheating on her with another man. Out of anger and jealousy, the man killed her at the realization that she has been cheating. He tried to pin the blame on Watson, but Kovacs is smarter than that.” Iverson explained.

“Wow.” Liezel nodded in shock.

“Yeah.”

“I bet Ace had an easy time telling her sister that.”

Jacobson shifted in his seat uncomfortably.

“What do you think Kovacs is doing right now?”

Liezel opened her mouth and then closed it like a fish. She sympathized with Ace, even though she is still a bit angry with her. It is the hardest thing to act as both a detective and a sister. She has to tell Breck why Taylor was killed, and especially with infidelity as a reason, it is the most heartbreaking instance ever.

“Ouch.”

“We offered to tell her instead but she insisted.” Iverson added.

“She wants to be there for her sister, it is natural.” Liezel said.

“Yeah.”

“And I think that she…”

Jacobson interrupted.

“Don’t you have a boyfriend to win back, Beckett? Why the hell are you still here talking to us?”

Rolling her eyes, Liezel saluted the detectives before walking out of the precinct.

Notes

Can I get a heck yeah for a possible Liezel/Alex reunion? Sorry this is kind of a filler, but yay that Beckett finally has someone she can talk to!!!
