Let the Floods Cross

t w e l v e

A few sharp knocks against the door prompted for Jack to exasperatedly answer the door. Usually, people would use the doorbell but this one particular person would always knock on his door. God damn it, Beckett, Jack thought to himself bitterly. When he threw the front door open, he nodded at Liezel as his theory is confirmed to be correct.

Liezel looks disheveled and worried about something, which worried Jack. She would only come to him in stress over one matter and it is something that he does not want to deal with right now. She looked like she had been fighting her tears, so he assumed that something weird must have went on yesterday, or even this morning. Shaking his head in defeat, he moved aside to let the tennis player inside.

“Jack, I am here because I have no one else to turn to.” She explained herself as she paced around his living room.

He gestured for her to sit down but she ignored him. She just kept walking around the room, scratching at her strangely greasy hair.

“Where is he?” Liezel demanded.

Jack knew whom she was referring to. He knew very well.

“Liezel…” He started.

“I know you know where he is. You are his best friend, he always tells you.” The tennis star pointed an accusing finger at him.

Jack held both hands up.

“First of all, you have been waking me up before noon four times in the past week. Second, what gives you the right to demand an answer out of me when you should’ve kept your shit together in the first place?”

Liezel released a shrill groan in frustration and kicked at the coffee table to release her anger. Her whole body whipped around quickly with a permanent glare on her face. Jack backed up slightly in mild fear. He didn’t want to get in the middle of this conflict between Alex and Liezel.

“Jack, if you know where my boyfriend is, you better tell me because he can be doing something impulsive out of anger right now. I need to find him and fix this.” Liezel said, voice rising as she continued.

She did not know what to do, because Alex ran off before she even woke up and she doubts that he went straight to the studio. When Alex is angry during one of their arguments, he acts on his impulse, does something stupid. A few years back, Liezel called off their relationship as a result of one of their critical arguments. She went as far as dating a fellow tennis star while she was off in the Australian Open during that January.

As a response, Alex got into various bar fights over the course of the two weeks she was in Australia. By the time she returned to Baltimore with the championship, Alex was placed in a holding cell at the Baltimore precinct. Jack and Liezel had to bail him out. Since he was angry with her for moving on so quickly, he went along and quickly found a fling to distract him from his loss.

Eventually, the two got back together as it always happens. They are each other’s constant no matter what; they always end up together. This time should be no different.

“Jack.” Liezel noticed that he hadn’t said a word.

“Look, I…”

“I do not want to bail my boyfriend out from jail, again, so I suggest you tell me.”

Jack grabbed at his messy hair and groaned loudly. He put his hand up to silence her.

“I do not know where Alex is, and if I did, I wouldn’t even tell you.” Jack finally said.

The tennis star kicked at the leg of the coffee table again with an accompanying growl of anger. She took his remote controller from the table and flung it across the room, knocking a painting down as it happened. Jack jumped in alarm as he eyed the object in shock.

“Dale is going to kill me if she sees this. She got it for me as an anniversary gift!” He exclaimed.

Liezel rolled her eyes.

“What anniversary? One-week anniversary?” She scoffed at him.

Jack’s head shot up in defense.

“See? You don’t even respect my girlfriend and me; why should I help you? If Alex does not want to be found, I’m going to respect that.”

Liezel stormed past Jack and approached a white electric guitar on a rack beside the TV. Jack gasped when he realized what the woman is trying to do. His eyes widened as he placed a hand over his mouth. The tennis player laughed bitterly as she grabbed the guitar by its neck.

“And what’s this…?” She asked nonchalantly.

Jack shook his head profusely.

“That’s my…”

Liezel shook her head, lifting the guitar up over her head. She pursed her lips at her friend expectantly as she waited for his reaction. He gasped at her, pleading to her with his eyes. She teasingly brought it down without completely slamming it onto the floor. The guitarist squirmed as a response.

“Please, don’t…”

“I don’t know… If I want to smash your guitar, I will. Why don’t you respectthat?” Liezel spat out at him.

Jack did not know what to do. He always knew that Liezel was feisty as hell, which is why Alex is so into her. It is on a rare occasion like this where Jack is genuinely on the other end of her hotheaded tirade. The white electric guitar in her hands is his favorite; he uses it for the recording sessions as well as for songwriting at home. He cannot live without it.

“Liezel, you are acting on impulse here. Honey, take a deep breath and put down the guitar.” Jack cautiously approached her and sighed in relief when she didn’t make a movement.

Liezel stared at him angrily as she felt her tears escape. She didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of sobbing, just stared at him as he carefully removed the electric guitar from her grip. After Jack delicately placed the object back to its stand, he turned back to the crying woman and escorted her to the sofa.

He sat her down and watched as she completely broke down in front of him.

“I just don’t want to lose him. He wants more from me than I am giving him, but I can’t give him everything that he wants. I don’t know what to do, Jack.”

Jack sighed, not knowing how to deal with crying women, especially if they are not Dale. Even with his own Dale, he didn’t know what to do when she cried or expressed sorrow over a particular matter. He awkwardly tapped on her shoulder as an attempt of comfort.

“You guys always come back to each other, this time is no different.” He tried.

Liezel shook her head.

“He kept saying how he was afraid that we’d lose each other forever, his prediction might just be right. It is a fucking premonition!”

Jack tilted his head in confusion.

“A premonition?”

“YES! A PREMONITION!”

Jack jumped.

“Geez, calm down. I just, I’ve never… Is that an SAT vocabulary word that I completely missed out on?”

Liezel rolled her eyes and reached for a sofa cushion.

“Liezel, what are you going to do with that?” He asked suspiciously.

The woman lifted the cushion up over her head with a teary grin on her face. He is surprised at how quickly her mood changed, but she may just be acting out of anger and sadness. The smile on her face isn’t a happy one, but a cynical one.

“No, Liezel!” Jack eyed her in realization.

The poor guitarist watched as Liezel chucked the cushion across the room. As a tennis player, she accurately aimed at the guitar on the rack. A satisfied smile formed on her face when the guitar fell on the wooden floor.

“Liezel, why would you…?”

“You should’ve helped me fix my relationship, Jack.”

“Liezel, I am so sorry but I cannot help you.” Zack said apologetically.

Liezel’s shoulders slumped in defeat as she fell face flat on the bass player’s sofa.

“Not you too, Zack.”

The reserved man did not know what to say. He really wants to help the poor woman with her relationship issues, but he has a duty to his own friend. It is not her fault that everything is so out of place between her and Alex right now. She thinks it is her fault and is tearing herself apart for it; he wants to tell her that Alex is the one at fault here. He should be the one fighting to fix everything and make it right, because he is the one who screwed up.

He cannot do that to Alex, though. Despite his fondness and respect for Beckett, he cannot compromise his friendship with Alex for that. It is the right thing to do, but he is never the one to choose morals over friendship. Alex is his best friend and means the world to him.

“I just want to know where Alex is.” She groaned in defeat.

Zack always liked Liezel, even before Alex knew her. This person has been his inspiration even before they made it to middle school. Alex did not move to Baltimore until they were in middle school, so Zack knew, or were aware of Liezel’s presence first. He even recalled himself harnessing a massive crush on her when they were in elementary school.

He never told her that, and does not intend to do so. However, the feelings are definitely gone by now since he got into two serious relationships in his lifetime that taught him that his love is meant for someone else and not the tennis player.

Even though his feelings for her were just a little boy crush, he still wanted to help her and preferred to be around her. She is always so determined to get what she wants; she always finds ways to assert herself with what she needs in life. She works very hard for the things in her life, and he looks up to her as a model of life. From her, he learned that he had to work for his dreams to come true. He will never forget that.

Before Zack can reply, the lock of the flat front door turned, forcing both of them to turn to the source. The door slowly opened, revealing Rian on the other side of the door. Behind him, is Ace.

Rolling her eyes, Liezel got up from the sofa and walked over to the pair.

“Hi, Beckett!” Rian greeted.

“Hey, Dawson!” She patted his shoulders lightly.

The drummer gave her a nod in return and watched as the tennis player advanced on his best friend. Liezel grabbed Ace’s wrist and pushed her against the back of the door. The trained detective eyed the athlete in surprise.

“Whoa, who ruffled your perfect feathers this morning?”

“Why did you tell Alex about what I told you?” Liezel shouted, pinning the blonde against the door.

Huffing irritably, Ace found a way out of the grip with her strength and in retaliation, pinned the angry woman in a similar position. She almost wanted to laugh at her detective instincts.

“Girl, relax. I was trying to help you wife that stud.”

“I told you, I didn’t want to marry him! Now he’s mad at me because you told him something he wasn’t supposed to know!” Liezel yelled.

Rian and Zack shared a look, both staring at each other in shock. They did not know anything about a wedding or a marriage proposal. It is strange that Alex did not even consult his best friends about this issue.

“ALEX PROPOSED?” Rian shouted, grabbing both of their attention.

Liezel struggled against the blonde’s grip.

“Yes, and Detective Gossip here told him that I don’t want to marry him because I can’t do hardcore commitment with my tennis career running and all.” She shot Ace a glare as she said that.

Rian gaped at his best friend.

“Acacia?”

The blonde shrugged as a response.

“Wow, aren’t you a pro at ruining relationships?” Zack muttered bitterly.

Ace released her hardened grip on Liezel after he said that. She turned to him completely with a saddened expression on his face. It is a silent acknowledgement to their history. Everyone in this room knew that Zack was referring to the relationship that he had with Ace.

“I didn’t ruin it, you did.” She noted, shoving Liezel away from the door.

Liezel squeaked in response while Rian opened his mouth to say something. The blonde did not wait for her friend to talk, already storming out of the loft.

Right after she left, Rian turned to Zack in anger.

“You see what you do here?”

Zack shook his head at the drummer and walked off to his bedroom. His departure left Rian and Liezel alone, and this instance does not happen often. She had never been as close to Rian as she is with the other three members of the band. Obviously, she is dating Alex—and along with that, she has a strong friendship with both Jack and Zack. Rian had always been someone that she associated herself with, but never had been closely acquainted.

The drummer approached her and placed a hand on her shoulder.

“Don’t worry, I believe you and Alex will be fine. That little sucker is crazy for you. He might be out of his mind right now, but he will return to you eventually. He will come around as he always does.” Rian said kindly.

Even though they are a bit unfamiliar with each other, Liezel found the most comfort from him. He is the only one who took the real initiative to try to make her feel better. Both Jack and Zack are just making half-assed attempts.

“Thanks Rian, you are good at this.” She murmured.

“Yes, I literally just came back from comforting little Kovacs—with her grief and all.”

Liezel gave the drummer a half smile. She really hoped that Alex would come around and understand her side of the story.

Notes

Drama. Drama. Drama. Shit definitely went down in this chapter. Like is anyone scared of Beckett and how freaking intimidating she is when she's in a state of panic?????

Anyways, the sequel to this story (as well as the third story of this series) is here: Top of Your Ambitions. Subscribe to it ahead of time if you are interested in reading it after this story closes. This story is about Det. Ace and Zack. :D As you can see in this chapter: tension and drama. A lot of unanswered speculation. I finished the story already and recently started on the fourth story which is Rian/OC.

Anyone wanna guess who that OC might be?
