Long Live Us

Chapter Nineteen

*Alex pov*

"We're going out of state for two weeks on a holiday, do you want to come with us or would you prefer to stay with one of your friends?" Alex's mum said, turning around from the computer screen to look at her son, who was stood in the doorway with just a pair of joggers hanging loosely from his hips on. He considered the offer in his sleepy state, knowing he would want to spend the whole time with Jack, it was just whether that desire was mutual. Deciding that risk was worth it, considering he couldn't be bothered to go on holiday, he declined the offer.
"I think I'll stay here, mum. I'll go stay with Jack." He said with a small smile, before walking into the kitchen. Yawning, he put the kettle on to make himself a cup of tea. While the water boiled, Alex let his mind wander to the boy next door. They hadn't seen each other since Saturday night, but had been texting constantly. Jack had come out to Rian, Zack and Josh yesterday, which made Alex ridiculously happy, as it meant that Jack was now slowly becoming more committed to him and was accepting himself more and more with each passing day. Hope flared in his heart that maybe, one day, they would be together and Alex could walk down the road hand in hand with the taller boy without a worry in the world. The kettle popping interrupted his thoughts, and he poured the water into his mug before taking out the tea bag and adding sugar. Taking a sip, he sighed in delight, before making his way into the living room. Plopping down on the sofa, he took his phone out of his pockets to tell Jack about the plans.

Hey, my parents are going away for two weeks tomorrow, is it cool if I stay with you?

Alex dropped the phone next to him and put the tv on. Channel flicking, he groaned at how crappy the tv was, before settling for a re-run of How I Met Your Mother. As he took another sip of his tea, his phone buzzed.
From: The Sexiest Person Ever Jack Barakat
Sure thing! Come over now and help me put my Christmas tree up :D

Alex laughed at how late Jack was putting the tree up, before telling his mum he was going next door. Not bothering to put any more clothes on, he shivered as the cold air hit his body and the twigs of the bush scratched as he pushed through. Jack was at the door the second the doorbell rang, and his eyes flickered happily when they saw Alex. The shorter boy felt a bit self conscious - standing on the doorstep in nothing just joggers and with a mug of tea in his hand.
"Hey good lookin'!" The lanky boy said with a grin, motioning for Alex to come in. Shuffling, he entered the house, realising he should've gotten ready before coming over. Jack led him into the dining room, which just had a sofa, tv and table in it, and there was a tree standing at the back of the room by the window. It was obviously a fake, and Jack hadn't put it together very well, but it looked cute. On the table were a few brown boxes, tissue paper sticking out the top. Looking into them and moving some of the tissue paper, Alex realised the boxes were full of baubles and various other decorations. He placed his tea down on the table and unwrapped a few, mesmerised by the glitter and the patterns, enjoying how the light bounced off the shiny surfaces. He loved Christmas - all the bright colours, dancing, eating, being happy, it was great.
"Did you know Jesus wasn't even born in December? He was born in summer and they just changed the date to coincide with other holidays." Jack said, in a matter of fact tone, as he wrapped a piece of silver tinsel around the bottom of the tree.
"I didn't actually." He replied, handing Jack another piece of tinsel. "Are you not a fan of Christmas then?"
"Meh, it's kinda cool. There's no reason though, we're all fools." He replied with a shrug and Alex could hear the grin in his voice. The brunette nodded, agreeing in a way - if what Jack had said was true.
"It's a fool's holiday!" Jack exclaimed, laughing at himself, pride in his eyes. Alex laughed at how happy he was with himself for putting a phrase together, he was truly like an oversized child. The pair spent the rest of the day decorating the tree, joking and laughing together, enjoying each other's company - something they would be getting used to in the coming days.

"Answer that." Jack groaned, moving his head so that it was hidden behind Alex's.
"It's your house!" He retorted, before accepting Jack would get up. When he stood up the taller boy whined, pouting up at him. Alex rolled his eyes and shook his head, making his way over to the door. Opening the door revealed Vic.
"Oh shit the party!" Alex said, while the Mexican rolled his eyes.
"I can't go by myself come on please!" He pleaded, pulling his best puppy dog eyes. The boy was stood in a navy t-shirt and black jeans, with a blue hoodie and blue converses. Alex looked down at himself: joggers and an oversized Ravens shirt he borrowed off Jack.
"Okay let me get changed."
"Who's at the door?" Jack's head popped up from the sofa, his eyes watching Alex intently.
"My friend Vic, I'm going out tonight." He said to Jack, before telling Vic to come in. Frowning, Jack stood up as he watched the boy enter.
"Jack I'm borrowing clothes. I'll be two seconds." Alex said before bounding up the stairs. He quickly slipped on a shirt of his that he had left here, before squeezing into a pair of Jack's skinny jeans and grabbing his denim jacket, before stuffing his phone in his pocket, ruffling his hair and going back down the stairs. He was relieved to see Vic perched on the arm of the couch, laughing loudly at something Jack was saying. When they heard him enter, they both stood up and walked over to the door. Vic hopped straight out the door, waving to Jack. Alex turned around to leave as well, but was stopped by the dark haired boy grabbing his wrist.
"Try not to get with anyone tonight yeah?" He said with a wink, but hurt was underlying his comment.
"I won't, Jack." Alex replied rolling his eyes.
"Good." The next thing he knew was Jack pushing his lips into his cheeks, close to the corner of his lips. Frozen, Alex knew he would be blushing madly and the tingling sensation remained on his skin even after Jack had pulled away and shut the door over.
"Come on lover boy!" Vic shouted from the edge of the driveway, jolting Alex back into reality. Nodding awkwardly, he caught up with his friend who was grinning at him.
"Oooooooo." He cooed, nudging Alex with his elbow, making him blush even more.
"Stop being a dick." Alex grumbled, electricity still pulsating through his body at how close Jack was too his lips. Did this mean he was wanting to kiss him? That he was ready to make things more official? The thought excited the brunette, and he smiled to himself, hiding his gave to that Vic would catch him.
"He totally likes you. It's so obvious." The shorter boy said, looking at Alex who just blushed again and nodded slightly.
"I hope so." Alex replied, although it was an understatement. The want for Jack and for something to happen between them was consuming him. At this point in time, there was nothing he wanted more than for the dark haired boy to open up and finally let him in.
"Oh you cheese ball! Right hurry up I wanna get pissed."

How ever many hours later, they had been at the party for a while, and Alex had lost Vic. The short boy had wandered off with a girl, leaving Alex alone in a house full of strangers. He was now stood in the corner of the kitchen, looking really awkward, sipping on his one can of beer for the night. Trying to stay sober for Jack was proving to be a difficult task, but he was managing. In all honesty, he wished he was with the tall boy now, cuddled up, rather than standing in a room full of sweaty drinks with loud music deafening him. Parties were fine if you knew everyone there, but when you're socially awkward and know nobody it kinda sucks. Alex wondered when Vic would reappear so that they could leave, but he guessed it wouldn't be any time soon. Sighing heavily to himself, he looked around the kitchen deciding what to do. There was nothing, obviously, and he sighed again taking another small sip.
"Alex?" A voice broke through his thoughts and he snapped his head up, wondering who here would know his name. It was safe to say he was surprised to see who he did.
"Morgan?" The dark haired boy smiled, his eyes lighting up.
"You remember me!" He exclaimed, grinning at Alex before taking a sip out of the cup in his hand.
"Of course I do." Alex replied, being careful at what he was saying, not wanting to accidentally let the boy think something would happen between them.
"How come you stopped texting me?" Morgan asked, sticking his bottom lip out slightly.
"It's complicated." Alex replied, not wanting to tell him that he stopped to prove his feelings to Jack. It sounded a bit pathetic to an outsider, not texting someone because you're trying to get with someone else.
"Boyfriend. I get it." Morgan said bluntly, the grin falling off I his face and his eyes narrowing slightly. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Like I said, it's complicated." Alex retorted, equally as blunt, not wanting to talk to the boy. Yeah he was hot and a decent guy, but, Alex knew he was only interested in some sort of sexual act, which the brunette knew he wouldn't comply too tonight.
"Can't we just hang out? As friends?" Morgan asked, sighing slightly and looking at Alex. His eyes were dark with sadness, like he was silently pleading the brown haired boy for something.
"Look Morgan, you're a great guy, but I don't really want to be here, so I'm gonna try find my friend and leave." He said, pushing off from the counter and trying to walk past Morgan. His futile attempt was ended when an arm blocked the way.
"Let me walk you home. We'll tell your mate." This offer appealed to Alex, because he could finally leave this stupid house and get back to Jack. After thinking for a moment, weighing out the pro's and cons before agreeing."Okay fine. Let's go."

"So, does your boyfriend walk you home?" Morgan asked, winking at Alex, who just rolled his eyes.
"Shut up."
"Oh come on, can I meet him?"
"Morgan I hardly know you." He said, annoyed. The whole walk home the boy had been pestering him about his "boyfriend", who wasn't even his boyfriend! As the minutes passed Alex was getting more and more pissed off. Why was this boy so annoying? Why couldn’t he leave Alex alone? He sighed in relief when he began to recognise where they were – wishing he knew the area better for Morgan hadn’t had to walk him. They walked for a few more minutes, the dark haired boy still firing questions and jokes at Alex. They turned down into Alex’s road, and the shorter boy blocked him out, and just focused on thoughts of blissfully falling asleep in Jack’s arms. That was all he had wanted to do all day, and now he wasn’t even with Vic, who had dragged him to the party in the first place. Making a mental note to call the Mexican tomorrow, he halted when they reached the right house. Alex noticed the downstairs light was still on – so Jack must be waiting up for him, considering it was nearly 3am.
“We’re here. Thanks for walking me.” Alex said, turning to Morgan and giving him a small smile.
“Anytime. Is there any chance of a second date?”
“Morgan stop.” He said rolling his eyes, trying to ignore the fact that the taller boy had taken a small step towards him. The closeness was making him uncomfortable, now that his mind wasn’t blurred by alcohol, he really didn’t want to be near him.
“Oh come on, one kiss goodnight.” He demanded, leaning down. Scowling, Alex pushed his chest, sending him flying backwards, grabbing a tree to stop himself from falling over. Any hope left his eyes, and he stared blankly at Alex, who was stood frozen, surprised by his strength as well as the fact he had actually managed to do that. The boys just stared each other out in silence, neither knowing what to do.
“Is something wrong?” A voice said, and both of them turned their heads to see who had spoken. Alex sighed in relief when he saw it was Jack. The tall boy was leaning on the frame of his front door in joggers and a Blink hoodie, twiddling one of the hoodie strings in his fingers.
“Oh is this him? You’re hero in fucking shining armour!” Morgan teased, anger now flowing off of him.
“Yeah looks like it. Bye.” Jack called from the door, making Morgan glare at him, before looking back at Alex, before scoffing loudly and walking back down the road. Alex composed himself for a minute, worrying that Jack would be angry. He watched Morgan’s silhouette dissolve into the darkness, before turning around. Thankfully, the lanky boy remained in the doorway, a small smile playing on his lips.
“What are you smiling at?” Alex asked, as he walked down the driveway and into the house, following Jack into the living room.
“My competition is weak. No way is he hotter than me.” He replied with a grin, making Alex laugh. His confidence was admirable, and it was one of the many things Alex adored about the boy. The boys plopped down onto the sofa, where Jack had been watching Home Alone.
“You watch this movie way too much.” Alex commented, taking a hula hoop out of the bowl that was on the table in front of him.
“You can’t watch this movie too much. It’s impossible, it’s way too good!” Jack replied happily, grinning quickly at Alex before turning his attention back to the TV. Alex chuckled, before looking at the screen as well. He wasn’t feeling this movie right now, he had seen it too many times – and he knew Jack had seen it a million more times than he had, which is how he was always confused about how much he could still love this movie. After a minute he was bored, and decided to turn his attention to Jack. He laughed as he spoke with the words, his eyes brighter than stars with joy. He was sitting normally, his arms spread out over the back of the sofa, his knees high as a result of the length of his legs. His black hair was flopped over his face, spiking up at the back where he had been leaning on it. He was beautiful, and looked comfortable, so for the first time in a while, Alex decided to make the first move and initiate something intimate between them. Shuffling over to him, Jack nodded slightly when Alex looked up, allowing him to do whatever he was planning. Pushing up on his legs, he pushed his body over Jack’s lap, so his legs were draping over him. The brown haired boy then snuggled into the taller boy’s armpit, smiling when Jack’s arm wrapped around his body. Finally, he was where he had wanted to be for hours.
“Did you have a good night?” Jack asked softly, his eyes not leaving the tv.
“Meh. It’s better now.” Alex replied, moving his arm so it lay on Jack’s chest, gently taking hold of his hoodie. Fingers ran through his hair, and he smiled, snuggling further into Jack, glad that he was back in his arms. Back where he belonged
