I Knew You Were Trouble
Chapter 20
Elaina’s pov
I woke up felling like a new person. Older, wiser, and probably going to be a lot stupider. Either way I didn’t care because it was my birthday. Well it was Alex’s birthday too but, I’m thinking about myself at the moment. I took my time getting out of bed until my bedroom door opened with my redheaded friend poking her head in. “Happy Birthday” she said happily, “Now get dressed. Willow and I are taking you out for breakfast”, she then preceded to hand me her daughter before riffling through my closet for clothes. I cooed at the little girl in my hands and at the same time had a pair of jeans hit my head. In which Willow giggled at. I handed her back to Kaitlin and changed as quickly as possible, and was then rushed out the door to IHOP.
Little did I know Zack and Alex were already at a booth chatting away like today wasn’t special at all. I put on a happy face though and enjoyed my stack of waffles with my brother, best friend, her boyfriend, and daughter. I just wonder why the rest of the gang isn’t here.
Jack’s pov
On a Sunday I get woken up by a 6am phone call from Jane. She basically said “Come over wearing something that is considered clothing and help me bring stuff over for the party”. What a lovely wakeup call it was. I started my searching my drawers for some sweats when it came down to a hot pink pair that Alex dared me to buy. Unfortunately, Elaina had most of them. I yanked on the sweats and a sweatshirt, because I’m too lazy for shirts. Driving all the way to Jane’s house I was greeted with a box of balloons and an air pump being shoved into my hands. She then closed and locked the door to her house and hopped into the passenger seat of my car. Okay then. I set the box in the back seat, then getting in the driver’s side and driving to Elaina’s I’m assuming. “Take all the time you need. Kaitlin hasn’t got Elaina out of the house yet” Jane said as she read a text message. I followed her instructions and actually followed the speed limit. In a good 15 minutes we had arrived in front of Elaina’s house. Jane immediately got out, grabbing the key from underneath the door mat and entering the house. I followed behind with the box of balloons. “Rian is going to be here with Cassadee in like 20 minutes. You and Rian are going to set up your equipment while Cassadee and I do anything we won’t need you guys for” Jane informed me, as I set the box on her dining room table. “Want me to start making balloons?” she just nodded and walked into the kitchen. Gladly, I started stretching balloons and filling them with air from the handy pump that was in the box. Two O’clock couldn’t come any faster.
The four of us had been working diligently for the past six hours. It was now noon and Cassadee and Jane were so nice as to make us sandwiches. “Shit” I heard Jane say from kitchen. She quickly ran out to where Rian and I were chatting and said,”Elaina wants to come back to change her clothes for some reason and they’re almost here”.”Hide any evidence of us being here” Cassadee rushed out as she hid the cakes and some things like our plates and the box with the balloons and decorations. I hid outside right underneath the kitchen window in a bush. Rian hid opposite of me in a bush underneath the living room window. It felt like ages had gone by before Jane came outside saying it was okay. After that we finished decorating and had the cakes out and all set up. In the extra time we had Jane and Cassadee made a few batches of chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes nicely decorated with Elaina and Alex in mind.
Elaina’s pov
This day has been crazy so far. All I wanted to do was have a small party with my friends at home. If I was even allowed to go home, I was lucky enough to spill something on my shirt and have to make an excuse to go home, but when I did I thought I saw decorations that I didn’t see this morning. Hmm, Dad must have put them up, and I was rushed out the door so fast that I didn’t get to admire the handy work. After I found a new shirt and threw it on Kaitlin dragged me out the door again. It wasn’t until One O’clock in the afternoon that I got a message from Jack saying that I should me him in the park. Oddly enough Alex got something similar from Jane, but he was to meet her elsewhere. So I told Kaitlin what was up and she understood. I drove to the park and sat on a swing near the playground where many kids tumbled around going down slides backwards and getting dirt on their play clothes. The most there was to being a child was coloring outside the lines and having a scraped knee or a bruise every once in a while. It just showed you knew how to have fun even though you decided to be over the top about it. In the distance I saw Jack coming towards the swing set. He looked all dressed up for some reason. A plaid shirt, and a nice pair of jeans; spiffy. “What are you doing sitting all alone?” he asked as he became closer and was now standing in front of me. “Following orders” I said, looking up and covering my eyes because the sun was shining right behind him giving this powerful glow. You know the part in the fairy tale where the knight saves the princess and the ride off into the sunset on his noble steed? Well this is just like that except my knight in shining armor was standing in front of me on a playground. “If you follow me I believe we have someplace to go” he said, holding out a hand for me to take. I took his hand and held it the entire time we walked from the park to who knows where.
We weren’t even walking that long and we ended up in front of my house. “Why are we…?” I was about to ask why we were here when I was cut off with a kiss. “You’ll see” he said before opening my door to a dark house. “What even…?”
“SURPRISE!!!”
This is brilliantly sneaky.
A party for me and Alex, and it was all a surprise. I have the best friends ever. Except Alex was standing behind the couch in between Jane and our mother. So the surprise was for me? Ohhh, I get it now. “Oh my god, I can’t believe you guys did this” I said. Glancing around the room I saw my friends and some other people I knew, but were probably here mostly for Alex.

It was getting later and we all were stood around my decorated dining room table waiting for something. Everything about this party has been a big surprise so I have absolutely no clue as to what will happen. Next thing I know the lights are being turned off and a guitar was being strummed; then some drums and a bass. What? I turned around to see Jack standing on our coffee table holding his guitar. “Alex you are the best friend I could ask for and Elaina you are the most amazing girlfriend ever” he said strumming is guitar a couple more times.

Jack sang obnoxiously while playing the short tune with Rian and Zack. We all laughed and turned our heads to the flickering light that was suddenly in front of Alex and I. It was indeed the candles on our bad ass cakes. I turned to Alex holding up three fingers silently telling him that we’re going to blow the candles out at the same time.
3..2..1 and the candles flickered no more. I took the candles off of mine and liked the frosting off, then placing them on a napkin. Then I got the best idea ever. I took some icing from my cake onto my cake and got Alex’s attention, as soon as he turned his head towards me I smeared what was no my finger over his nose and on his cheeks. Being the geek that I was I started laughing until I felt not just icing but cake on my face. It was now his turn to laugh until I did the same with my cake. “You know each other for a few months and you already act like siblings” came a voice I hadn’t heard in a while. “Mom?”, I asked looking over the crowd. “Right here” she said, suddenly in between both me and Alex with her arms around our waists, pulling us in for a hug. Everyone around us awed. This was the best birthday ever. I don’t know how it could possibly get any better than this.

Little did I know it could get better. Jack had brought me to my room while holding a small paper wrapped box. Now I know what you’re thinking. Birthday sex, woo get some. No, he had me sitting on my bed and he nervously handed me the present. “Jack, you didn’t have to get me anything” I said as I carefully unwrapped the gift. It was a narrow velvety box, and when I opened it I was surprised I didn’t drop it from how shocked I was. It was gorgeous, and beautiful, and it was the charm bracelet I saw at the mall. “Jack, you seriously didn’t have to...” I trailed off as he barged in saying “You should put it on”. He took it out of the box and wrapped the bracelet around my right wrist. “I love it, thank you so much”. Then some passionate kissing that later ended up having us both in our pajamas by 9:30. We lay in bed talking about anything and everything.
That night I fell asleep with a grin on my face, all because I had the only things I could possibly ask for. A boyfriend and best friends that would do anything for me and I would do the same.
