I Knew You Were Trouble
Chapter 19
Jack’s pov
Weeks have gone by since Elaina and I have fought and now we’re just the cute couple Alex, Jane, Rian and, Cassadee were when they started dating. Now being the cute couple we are I should probably plan a secret birthday party for Elaina and Alex. So, during my first period class I sat next to Jane and discussed their party while the substitute teacher let us do whatever.
“Are we going to make Alex play at his own party or are we going to let you sing?” she asked when we were discussing music. “I can sing Happy Birthday”, I suggested. She nodded and added something to some list she wouldn’t show me. “What are we going to do about cake? How about we each make them their own cake and then buy a normal cake?” I just nodded hopping this would all turn out perfect. “What are you getting Elaina?” this question caught me off guard for sure. I had absolutely no fucking idea what I was going to get her. I tried asking her but she just said her ‘friends and family’. I mean it’s sweet and all but I want to get her something. You only turn 18 once so why not get her something special?
“Jack”
Now Jane was waving her hand in front of my face. I guess I was spacing out.
“Yeah, umm I don’t know.”
“Have you asked her?”
“Yeah”
“And what did she say?!” she asked a little enthusiastically.
“She wants her friends and family” I answered.
“You know what I’ll bring her out shopping with the girls and we’ll see what she picks out and I’ll text you options”
“Good idea. I’d be so lost.”
“I knew you would be”
I pouted as she laughed and grabbed her books right as the bell rang.

After I got home from school I waited maybe an hour and a half before Jane texted me different pictures of things she saw and wanted but nothing caught my eye as something. It was mostly perfume and clothes. I decided I’d drive to the mall and follow them around so if she saw something that Jane wasn’t telling me about I could get it there. Sometimes I believe I was Einstein in a past life.
Elaina’s pov
I don’t understand why they brought me out here. Well yeah we go shopping randomly all the time, but not when it’s so close to our birthday if it’s coming up soon. I was forced from my thoughts as Jane held up another shirt and asked, “Do you like this?”
“I still don’t understand why all of this is necessary.”
“Trust me you’ll understand later” Jane assured me.
For some odd reason I feel like I’m being watched. Just to make sure I look around me and don’t even notice anything suspicious. My mind must be playing tricks on me. “I don’t know about you guys but, I’m leaving” I said before making my way out of Hollister. I don’t even like Hollister that much. Jane, Cassadee and, Kaitlin were quick to catch up as I walked out of the store and in the direction of the store we came in through. They soon caught up only to be stopped when the most amazing bracelet caught my eye from the display of a jewelry store. It was a cute charm bracelet. It had two charms on it already and plenty of room for more. The two charms were a silver heart with pink in the middle of it. The other one was a candle for like a birthday or maybe an anniversary. Again I felt like someone was watching me, I looked around and saw nothing peculiar. A sales man came and asked me if I wanted to see it, but I declined and sadly started walking away. Shit gets weirder and so do my friends as it gets closer to my birthday.
Jack’s pov (Again)
She almost saw me. Twice. They were in Hollister and Jane was showing her a shirt. She didn’t look too interested. This isn’t even somewhere she would typically shop, that’s part of the problem. It wasn’t until I followed them out of the store and she stopped at a jewelry counter. She was looking at something, her face lit up at whatever it was and I knew that I had to get it for her. I was hiding in a plant far enough away that I can’t tell what she’s even looking at. A guy walked over to talk to her, but she shook her head and walked away. This was the time to make my move. Casually I walked away from the plant with my hands in my pockets, making my way over to the counter. I looked at the display admiring the silver and gold jewelry. Then I saw a charm bracelet, this looks like something Elaina would like. Just to make sure, I asked the guy what she had been looking at and then bought it. Well, I lied, I’m no Einstein but I’m pretty sure I nailed her birthday gift. The best way to spend a Friday afternoon is following your girlfriend to find what she wants for her birthday.
When I got home I saw that Jane blew up my phone asking me a million questions. Half of them were about why I was following them, and the rest were about making the cake and cupcakes. I replied that I was on my way over to her place to make the cakes. On my way I couldn’t stop thinking about how perfect this is going to turn out. My best friend and girlfriend share a birthday. You just can’t get a better deal than that. After all my thinking I had ended up in front of Jane’s house, and because I’m a lazy fuck I texted her telling her I was in front of her house. She replied saying I was a weirdo and that her parents aren’t home so I can come right in. After all the rumors that happened a few weeks back I’m kind of cautious about going to Jane’s house. Who knows what friends Holly could have that live near her too? Five whole minutes of thinking about the rumors and I finally get the balls to go inside. Elaina would understand that I would not do anything with Alex’s girlfriend, and Alex knows that too. At least I hope they do.
“In the kitchen”, she calls as I close her door.
“I don’t know where your kitchen is”, I reply.
She sticks her head out from behind a partial wall that is probably 5 feet away from me. I walk over to her and start by picking up a wooden spoon and toying with it before an apron was being thrown at me. I took a good look at it before putting it on. It was black with an emphasized muscular Batman on it and it stopped so that the head was cut off. Quickly, I put it on and hurried to Jane’s side ready to be told what to do. Why did I sign myself up for this? “Alex’s cake is already in the oven. So you need to crack these eggs into that bowl”, she said handing me some eggs and pointing to a small bowl.
Eventually, Elaina’s cake had made it into the oven unharmed and we were now working on Alex’s cake. We honestly didn’t know how to decorate it. While we baked cakes we had my phone on the dock blasting all of my music on shuffle. It wasn’t until All the Small Things came on that I suddenly had the best idea ever. Jane noticed my face light up and instantly asked what it was I was thinking about besides fucking Mark Hoppus. We all know I want to do that. “We can frost it with white frosting and you can draw or whatever fancy cake decorating thing you do to make this on the cake. Alex would love it!” I said enthusiastically.
She had me frosting the Alex’s cake while she got Elaina’s out of the oven. “Now what are we supposed to do about Elaina’s? We could always make it pink, but doesn’t that seem too girly?” she asked. “You could make it a One Direction cake for shits and giggles” I suggested thinking this would be hilarious. “Sure”. After a while I was done frosting Alex’s cake and she now had me frosting Elaina’s in pink. In the time it took me to frost Elaina’s cake Alex’s was done and it looked amazing. “Holy freaking fuck Jane, this is awesome” I said while admiring her work. “Ok you can go now. Your only job now is to keep Elaina and Alex occupied until we need you for tomorrow. Bye now” she said with a dismissive wave. She had gotten started on Elaina’s cake. She’ll hate me, but love me at the same time.
