You'll Get Sick of Saying Everything's All Right

Chapter inspiration: Never Let This Go – Paramore

Victoria knew it was a stupid idea to bottle things up and not tell Jack what had happened the day before. She already knew how angry Jack was at his best friend about the situation and didn’t want to make the tensions worse between them. They were in a band after all, and they couldn’t do something as drastic as break up over a petty fight one of them shouldn’t even be in. Nevertheless, Victoria was dying inside to tell the lanky boy. She had no one else at the moment, and she knew Jack would gladly like to know the reason why Alex had held onto Lisa for so long.

But she never did, and that was her biggest regret.

Jack had gone out with Zack for the day. They had both offered Victoria to go, but she passed. She wasn’t in the mood at the moment. She sat around on her sofa for the day, watching reruns of Spongebob while eating bags and bags of Doritos. She finally had the urge to get up when it was around the time for her to leave for work. It was a Friday and the theater would be packed, sadly. She’d have to put on a fake smile and a cheery face for the people who couldn’t care less.

She grabbed her visor and keys as she headed to the door in her uniform. Sighing, she went outside to lock her apartment when her visor fell from her hands. She started to bend to pick it up but was surprised to see another hand pick it up for her. “Fancy running into you here,” he smiled as he handed the visor back.

“It’s my apartment, so …” She looked up at him in confusion and locked her apartment. “What do you want, Alex?”

“I have news …” He stuck his hands in his pockets as Victoria pulled her key from the lock and looked down. “… About Lisa.”

Her head instantly snapped up as she swallowed down the lump in her throat. “And?”

“You might want to let me inside so we can sit down and talk about it.”

“I have work, Alex. Just tell it to me straight.” She noticed the way he bit his lip nervously. “Come on, Gaskarth. I can handle any shit you tell―”

“I can’t contact you anymore.”

She stopped midsentence with her mouth hanging open. Was he serious? She knew how much he loved to joke, but by the look on his face … “What?” was the only word she could muster.

“Lisa said that she will give me another chance and not ruin our rep if I have no more contact with you―no friendship, no texting, no calling. Nothing.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket, her contact number already on the screen as he handed it to her.

She stared at the phone in shock. Was this seriously happening? She knew the consequences of not doing this and how bad Lisa could ruin them. She had already lost Alex for seven years and she had survived, but she feared if she could live without him for the rest of her life. Everything was so simple between them. It didn’t have to be much. She would lightheartedly agree to just being friends with him for the rest of their lives, as long as she could see him and his beautiful lopsided smile every day. But never seeing him again―period? No, she couldn’t deal.

Despite the war raging in her head to scream out in disagreement to him, she slowly took the phone from his hands. She pressed, “Delete contact.” And as the confirmation button popped, she glanced up at his sad eyes, the same eyes that used to hold such warmth and light. “You know I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t important.” He whispered.

She pressed confirm on the phone.

He cleared his throat as she slipped the phone back in his hands, throwing him a small and very clearly fake smile. “Don’t do that,” he muttered. “Don’t smile. This isn’t the time to fake a smile.”

“Well, what the fuck do you want me to do, Alex?” She finally exploded. “Congratulate you? Tell you, ‘good luck?’ Give my best wishes? Because I fucking can’t at this moment. There’s nothing none of us can do to make this better. Faking a smile is the only thing I can do, but hey,” she reached up, and just as Alex thought she was going to kiss him, she slapped his cheek a few times. “Congratul―fucking―lations. Have a wonderful life with Lisa.”

She walked away, passing him quickly so she wouldn’t have to look back. She almost didn’t believe it was him when he grabbed her wrist. “Victoria,” he breathed out, “I still love you.”

She didn’t even look back as she muttered back, “I know.”

And as she got out of the apartment building to go to work, she knew she wasn’t going to her job. She didn’t know where she wanted to go, just that she wanted far away from here. A drive with a consequence was just what she needed.
