Misery Business

Her hair lashed the door hard as she ran from the apartment. Still in shock, Victoria was the last to race after her as Alex sprinted out of the place. He caught his girlfriend’s arm by the elevators. His grip was strong as she tried to pull away, tears streaming down her face. “LET GO OF ME, ALEX!” She shrieked.

“Lisa, at least let me explain.” He tried to stay calm, but that clearly wasn’t okay with her.

“YOU DON’T EVEN NEED TO EXPLAIN! I’M NOT AN IDIOT! HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON?!” Black lines from her mascara ran down her cheeks.

“Lees―”

“HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON, ALEX?!” She grabbed at his shirt collar, insanity becoming her.

Victoria pushed them apart with her arms and stood in front of Alex in protection. “Okay, Lisa, if you just come back to my place, you can calm down and we can―”

Lisa’s hand flew up and whipped across Victoria’s face―all in one quick motion. The action made Victoria stumble back, and to her luck, Alex caught her. “YOU FUCKING BITCH!” Lisa grabbed for Victoria’s collar, pulling her from Alex and ready to slap her again. “YOU WHORE! I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU!”

“Get the fuck off me!” Victoria pushed the girl off of her, brushing the crinkles in her shirt with her fingertips. Lisa lunged for her again, and before Alex could get in the middle again, Victoria put her hands out and grabbed Lisa’s shoulders. “Lees, I’m sorry. Just let me explain.”

“I DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANYTHING FROM YOU, WHORE.” She shook away from Victoria’s grip, smudging the tear stains from her face as she pointed to Alex. “We’re done. For good.”

“Lisa―”

She gritted her teeth. “SCREW YOU, ALEX!” Her body was almost shaking from anger and tears. “Everyone will hear about this. SAY GOODBYE TO THE BAND!” And with that, she ran down the staircase to her apartment.

Alex walked over to Victoria, holding her red cheek as she continued to stare where Lisa just stood. “Are you okay?” He looked deep into her eyes, but she still stared off into space.

“Uh―yeah, it just hurts a little.”

His calloused fingers rubbed away something wet on her cheek. “You’re crying.”

“What?” Her eyes finally met his as she brought a hand to her face. “Oh, fuck,” she muttered under her breath, wiping the tears away.

“I have to go catch up to her. I might still have a chance.” But before he could take a step, Victoria had grabbed his wrist.

“Wait, what?”

“This is all my fault. I gotta fix it.”

“Alex―”

“No, Victoria!” He pulled away from her grip. “I need to deal with this. I never should’ve started this again, and now it’s my fault this has happened.”

“Why are you freaking out so much about this?!” Her nerves made her whole body shake as confusion racked her brain.

“Don’t you get it?!” He said it as if it were completely obvious. “The reason why I told you I couldn’t break up with her before: reputation.”

“EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT FUCKING REPUTATION.” She ground her teeth.

“SHE COULD RUIN OUR BAND!” He knotted his hands in her hair. “She’s a major editor and writer at Buzznet, a website home to dozens of our fans. One blog post is read by thousands of them.”

Victoria ran a hand through her hair in realization. “She’s been blackmailing you all this time to stay with her?”

“One bad article about the band―or even you―could ruin all of us forever.” He took a step away towards the elevator and pressed the button. “I’ve gotta get her back.”

He took a step inside the elevator when it arrived but turned around when Victoria called, “Alex?”

“Yeah?”

“I …” She watched his eyebrows furrow as he waited. She should say it? Right now? No. But― Fuck it. “I love you.”

She was surprised as he hesitated, finally muttering, “I love you too.”

And that was when the elevator doors closed.
