New year's eve.

It had been two months since I went to Jack’s flat that day, to tell him my decision, to finally tell him I loved him. And since that day, things were perfect.

Also, I had completed six months in Baltimore, that meant I only had another six months left with Jack, unless we could find a way to stay together.

We spent every single moment together. I couldn’t convince him to go back home, live with his family, but he would often visit them, see if they needed something from him, May was a lot happier though. When Jack was in his flat, I would go there, we would spend the afternoon sitting on the couch seeing stupid movies and laughing at random things. He would come over my house so we could spend the day listening to old music and eating junk food, and when we couldn’t see eachother, we would spend the whole day talking on the phone and texting eachother.

He had shown me the whole town. We sometimes walked through the streets with nowhere to go, and I would forget everything and just try to make myself believe that moment was real, and after all I’ve been through, I actually deserved it.

That night was going to be New Year’s Eve. We couldn’t spend the Christmas night together, he had traveled with his family just one day after my birthday – December 14th -, so we decided to go somewhere tonight. May was the only one who knew about our little relationship. I say relantionship because we weren’t really dating or anything, I mean, Jack never really asked me out, and I didn’t have the guts to do it, I felt like I wasn’t the one who had to do it though, as Jack always joked, I was the girl of our relationship. It hurt me a little bit, the fact I couldn’t say he was my boyfriend, but I didn’t care much about it, I knew he loved me and that was enough.

I took a shower and dressed up with palid gray skinny jeans, a black t-shirt and my Blink sweater, Jack loved it.

His car finally appeared in front of my house and I ran downstairs. Jack had knocked on the door and was hugging Rose and saying happy new year. Rose didn’t know about anything “officialy”, but I was sure she knew there was something else between me and Jack, especially today when I told her I was going to spend the night with him.

I whispered a shy “Hi” to him and hugged Rose and Charlie. We walked silent towards Jack’s car, without looking back. We finally closed the doors and he was already turning on the engine when I attacked his neck. I missed him. I talked to him everyday, but we haven’t seen eachother since my birthday, and believe me, that was a lot. I almost died.

He turned around to face me and still without saying anything, he kissed me gently. Although I haven’t kissed many people in this life, I knew Jack was an awesome kisser.

“I missed you…” I whispered against his lips, catching my breath, earning a smile from him.

“I missed you too babe.” He whispered back, letting me go and turning around to the car stereo.

I moaned a little bit with the loss of contact, but we still had the whole night to do whatever we wanted.

“So… where are you taking me Jacky?” I said with a childlike voice, he sighed, pretending to be irritated, I just chuckled.

“It’s a surprise.” He grinned.

We drove for about and hour, singing Foo Fighters out loud all along the way, it was starting to get darker when we finally arrived.

We were in the middle of nowhere, you looked around and all you could see were trees, the dirt road we came from, a little wooden gate and the beautiful sunset colored sky.

I was surprised though, I thought we were going to a restaurant, or even Jack’s flat, but I really loved the surprise. He laughed at my face and I lightly slapped his shoulder.

We drove through the gate and along another narrow dirt road. After some minutes we finally arrived at a huge glade with an equally huge white wooden house in the middle of it. It was just so awesome I grinned and Jack laughed once more.

“Oh my god Jack, what is this place.” It was truly beautiful.

“My parents’ country house, we used to come here when I was a kid, but know is completely abandoned.” He said, raising an eyebrow.

“Don’t you think that’s a little bit creepy?” I joked at him.

“Nah, it will be fun.” He gave me a creepy laugh. “I like to look at the stars sometimes, and I would love to show you the sky from here, it’s the most fucking awesome thing I’ve ever seen. And the fireworks are awesome from here too.” He said, parking the car near the house.

“Fireworks. In the middle of nowhere.” I said, ironically.

“Hey, we’re not in the middle of nowhere.” He laughed, putting one arm around my shoulders while we walked towards the house. “We have neighbors you know?” He said, messing up my hair with his free hand.

“Don’t do that you asshole!” I laughed, looking at my messed hair through the reflex on the house’s glass door.

“Respect me, I’m the older one here.” He said, pretending to be serious.

“Sorry Jacky.” I said, raising my head and biting his neck lightly.

“Ok, you’re forgiven.” He said, facing me and giving me a quick peck.

He opened the door and the house was a lot more different than I expected. When he said the house was abandoned I was expecting a huge mess, with furniture out of place, burnout light bulbs and creepy noises coming from upstairs, I guess I was watching to many horror movies though.

The house looked like a Christmas movie house, comfortable and way too organized. It didn’t even looked like a Barakat’s house, while their mansion in Baltimore was all modern and clean, this one was simple and colorful. Of course it had some dust over the furniture and flying around, but ignoring that it looked absolutely neat.

Jack tried to turn on the lights, and as I expected, they wouldn’t turn on. He whispered “fuck” and I walked towards the living room couch, which had a nice fireplace in front of it.

“Jack, this is awesome.” I didn’t know where to look, everything was perfect, I wish I could live there.

“Yeah, but the lights won’t turn on and that fucking sucks.” He laughed ironically, aparently annoyed. “I’m going to the basement, see if there’s some firewood so we can light this thing up, you wait here.” He said, dissapearing into the house.

I got up and started to look at the dozens of picture frames scattered all around the living room. They were all photos of them when they were kids, in some of the photos May and Joe weren’t even born yet, or were just cute babies. There was this one photo that brought tears to my eyes. It was young Bassam and a little boy by his side, who I was sure it was Jack, they were on a boat, fishing. They looked so happy and prefect it was just too sad to think of the mess that family had become. I guess that’s what they wouldn’t return to that house anymore, because they weren’t truly happy anymore, all of that memories were only lies now. They looked like a happy family back then, and I wondered if some day I would have that too.

I didn’t notice Jack was there when he hugged me from my back and kissed my neck gently.

“Hey babe.” He whispered in my ear, making me shiver. “What you thinking of?” He said, making me turn around to face him.

“I…” I wasn’t sure of what I was thinking of. “I wish someday we can have a family too.” I smiled, removing a bit of hair from his face.

“We will have a family Alex.” He said, kissing me. “And different from this one…” He continued, staring at the picture of him and his dad. “… we will be a happy family.” He smiled back at me. “But before we can have a family we need to light this fireplace before it gets darker, or this house can get really scary.” He said, breaking the moment, making me laugh.

We lit up the fireplace and it started to get darker. We couldn’t turn the TV or radio on, so we spent some time talking about random stuff, without bringing the family subject back. Jack found some wine stored in the basement and we drank it along with the marshmallows Jack found in his bag, that we roasted on the fireplace.

It was getting late, we were already half-drunk when we ran outside. Jack tackled me and we both fell on the fluffy grass. He got on top of me and I couldn’t see his face.

“Hey.” He said, I laughed. “I love you.” He whispered, moving his mouth along my neck, making me giggle.

“I love you more Jacky.” I said, and he raised his head again to stare at me.

“No you don’t.” He said, and before I could reply he kissed me, breaking into my mouth with his wine tasting tongue.

When I was already breathless, he laid by my side and I could finally look at the sky.

I had never seen anything so awesome. I had never seen so many stars. I had never seen anything like that. My head was spinning and everything was so perfect I started to laugh.

“Oh my god Jack.” I was speechless.

“You like it?” He whispered against my ear.

“It’s perfect.” I said, turning around to face him.

“I know.” He said, laughing at my face, I couldn’t stop looking at the sky. “Hey, it’s almost midnight.” He said, showing me his phone. It was 23:59.

I rested my head on his chest and he hugged me as we waited a little bit looking at that awesome sky.

Seconds later, the sky bursted into gold and silver. Those were the most awesome fireworks I had ever seen, and they were really close. I smiled.

“Happy new year babe.” He whispered against my hair, grabbing my hand and sliding a cold piece of metal along my finger. “You’re all mine now.”
