Long Distance Calls

Eight

Letting the curtain to the window fall back in place, York turned to let Alex and Abbey have their privacy. Now that she had seen that they were actually getting along, not to mention kiss, she could rest at ease. She went back to join Rian and the rest of the guys back in the living room.

They left two hours later, Abbey and Alex being almost inseparable until they were walking out the door towards the car. The drive home was quiet, each of them too lost in their thoughts to realize. Abbey obviously on her night with Alex, and York on slightly less romantic things.

Like Rian. Like all the things that she had been keeping in for so long. Like all the emotions that she had been hiding since what happened with Scott. Things that she couldn't tell Rian or Abbey or even her brothers for that matter. Things that she needed to keep in, things that she couldn't tell anyone. And they all seemed to be resurfacing more than usual. Why? She had no idea, maybe it was because Abbey was finally finding happiness. That now that she didn't have to worry so much about the younger girl, that she wasn't distracted. Or maybe it was the fact that the one person she loved most in the world just gave her the first edition of her favorite book and she couldn't even kiss him.

It was incredibly sad that one person in your life can screw you up so much only after three months. Pathetic. York was probably never going to fully heal after what had happened. Even after how much she tired she knew she was never going to be the same girl ever again. And no matter how much she loved and cared for Rian, it wouldn't matter, the past was always going to hold her back. The worst part was that she knew that Rian had feelings for her, he didn't actually keep it a secret like she tired to. They both knew, and she was making Rian miserable by doing this to him. He deserved so much better, someone who would actually love him like she wished she could.

When they were safely inside their apartment, York mumbled that she was heading to bed before shutting her bedroom door shut. She knew that Abbey could tell something was going on, but she just needed to be alone. York turned to change into a pair of shorts and band tee and then climbed into bed. The book that Rian gave her was already on her nightstand and she carefully picked it up and ran her fingers across the cover. Sighing to herself, she flicked on her lamp on her night stand and carefully opened the cover, turning to the first page. Even if she could never be close to Rian like she wanted, at least this was something.
