Long Distance Calls

Ten

Another day, another five billion things to worry about. But that wasn't enough to keep York's mind off of everything that happened two nights ago. She had been avoiding Rian's calls and also dodging all of Abbey's attempts to talk. But that was only going to last for so long. Though she wasn't going to stop there. She always got up before Abbey, showered, dressed and was out the door just as her roommates alarm was going off. She'd take her time going to work, getting a cup of coffee and a muffin or something at Starbucks. It was five minutes extra to her travel time to work, having to go the opposite way before actually heading in the right direction. But it was needed since she wasn't sleeping well anyway, and the coffee helped wake her up and get her ready for the long day at work.

And as if her boss knew she was going through hell, she just added to it. Being more demanding and bitchy than usual. She was constantly on her feet, running from office to office picking up things Miranda needed while also juggling the phone and email also. It was incredibly hectic, but it helped her keep her mind off of things, if only for a little while.

Then after work she took her time going home, sometimes stopping at a bookstore to spend a few hours in or finding something to do. Just so she didn't have to see Abbey's worried and sympathetic looks she always gave whenever she got home. It was getting really on her last nerve and she just wanted it all to stop.

That day was no different. Wake up before Abbey, leave just as she was getting up, Starbucks, work, bookstore, then home.

As she walked through the door to her apartment, she was glad to find that she was actually home before Abbey. On any normal day, she'd find the younger girl already on the couch, almost waiting for her to come home. She'd give a weak smile as she passed and shut the door to her room the change and avoid the looks. Then she wouldn't come out until Abbey called her for dinner. Dinner would be awkward and silent, then York would go back to her room before Abbey could say anything about her behavior. But thankfully, that day was different.

She welcomed the silence with open arms as she went to her room to change. York left the door open a bit just so she could hear when Abbey came home. She felt horrible being so depressed when Abbey was so happy with Alex. She knew without even talking to her that she had gone on dates with Alex. There was an even brighter smile on the younger girls face now that Alex was in her life. York was happy for her, honestly, she was. Even if she didn't show it, she was. Abbey deserved all the happiness in the world. She didn't deserve a depressed roommate that made her worry. Abbey would deny it but York knew that she was worrying like she always did. Abbey was so kind and sweet, putting others before herself and constantly worry, half of the reason she had such anxiety sometimes. Not only because she had the fear of being alone, but because she worried so much also. Abbey didn't deserve to have York bring her down now that she had found happiness. York hated herself a little more just because she knew that she was doing that to the younger girl. York was supposed to be taking care of Abbey, had promised so to the younger girls mom. It wasn't supposed to be the other way around. And yet York owed Abbey her life. She was the one to bring her out of her darkest place she had been after everything with Scott. Abbey didn't need this anymore.

As she changed, she caught sight of her stomach in the mirror. And as if she needed another reminder of what Scott did, there it was. The once smooth unblemished flesh was now littered in scars and burns. All thanks to one man she had known for a matter of months.

There was no way of knowing how long she had stood there only in her bra and jeans, staring at her stomach. But the sudden clearing of someones throat pulled her out of her thoughts and startle her. There was a moments thought that it was Scott, after all it was the same way he liked to sneak up on her when they had been dating. Her heart pounded as she thought he found her. But when she looked up, she only saw Abbey there, and tried to rearrange her expression hide the fear that had been there.
She didn't say anything as she turned to grab the shirt she had been about to put on. But felt all the unanswered questions and thoughts hanging in the room as Abbey watched her. Finally she turned, able to get the wall up that she had taken the last two years to build after it had crumbled due to Scott.

Abbey held her gaze as she finally opened her mouth to speak. "York, we really need to talk."
