Chased by the Past
Heartbreaking News (Alex POV)
After we had woken up again, sometime around 11 a.m., my phone rang. It was Zack.
“Hi Zacky, what’s up?” I asked, in my usual happy tone.
There was no answer, only quiet sobbing. I was instantly worried, imagining different scenarios that could’ve made Zack weep.
“Zack? Is that you?” the sobbing became less for a second when he let out a barely audible yes.
“What is it? Zack, please tell me!” I could hear him breathe in deeply.
“Jack… it’s Rian… he… he…” he started sobbing again. I was seriously worried now. “He was attacked by a bear and is… he is… in a coma.”
I could feel my eyes welling up, but I didn’t care. I felt a sharp pain in my chest, but it went numb after a few seconds.
“Zack, tell me this isn’t true. Please. It can’t be,” I said in a very quiet voice.
He kept on sobbing and then ended the call.
Jack had been showering and he came back now. He was happy, and asked me how I was doing. When I didn’t answer, he sat down next to me and put his arm around me.
“Jay, what is wrong?” he asked, in a very concerned tone.
I was still numb but I managed to get out an answer. “Rian… He is in a coma.”
Five hours later we were back on the airport, waiting for boarding time. I couldn’t get the sound of Zack’s desperate sobs out of my head. I felt like crying too, but I was just too empty and numb to do so.
The flights were horrible, even though everything was quiet. Zack’s mum picked us up at the airport and brought us to the hospital.
Zack had black shadows under his eyes and he was pale as a ghost. He just hugged us and led us to Rian’s room. Rian was hooked up to loads of cables, his head bandaged along with probably more than 70% of his body. There was a little bed next to the hospital bed he was in. I figured it was for Zack. I went over to Rian and touched his hand. He looked very fragile.
He didn’t react. Zack started crying again. I went back to him and me and Jack hugged him. We stood there in silence, united in our pain.

I know this chapter is depressing and sad... sorry :cI probably won't be able to update until sunday, sorry for that too :/
