Chased by the Past
The Attacker (Zack POV)
I saw the shadow before Rian did. I shrieked in fear and alerted Rian who looked up before shrieking too. The shadow moved and before I could do anything, Rian was gone. I cried out his name, terrified. I leapt off the couch and ran to the place I had last seen him. I spied through open the door and saw the intruder.
It was a giant black bear. As we lived in the suburbs of Baltimore, it was possible for bears to get close, but I had never heard of anything like this. I got out my phone, I was trembling so much I had to dial three times. When I finally managed to call them, I hastily told them what was happening and they promised to be here in 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, I decided to get some pepper spray and fight the bear. He was dragging Rian behind him, Rian was screaming.
I found the can and got together all my courage, walking up to the big animal. I shouted something to get its attention and it worked, it let go of Rian and diverted its attention to me. I stood tall and held up my can, I wanted to spray some, but the beast just knocked it out of my hand. I realized that I was now unarmed, completely helpless, and, completely unable to think of anything else, crouched down.
The bear was about to sink his claws into my flesh when I heard sirens. Thank god, the police and an ambulance. But the enormous mass of fur was still towering over me, making me want to lie in bed with Rian, under a soft blanket and being warm.
I was prepared to die, I could smell the bear’s breath (not good), but then, all of a sudden the bear was gone and laying on the ground next to me instead.
I looked up to see a hunter’s face. He was about my age, tall, blonde hair and muscular.
“Hi, I am Eric. Nice to meet you,” he said with a really deep voice. I was smitten. Although I had just nearly died in a fight me versus black bear, I still thought mostly normal.
That was when it hit me. Rian. What had happened to him? I looked around, he was on a stretcher, not moving.
