Twenty-eight.
Emily POV:
I just got off the phone with my mom –at least one person didn’t forget about my birthday- when Ashley came in. “Hey, you could have knocked.” I said, a little pissed. “I’m sorry.” she apologized. “What’s up?” I asked, not really interested. “Well, I’m here to tell you to get ready for dinner.” “Where’s Jack?” I asked her, I hadn’t seen him in a while. “Yeah uhm. He had this thing.. So, he can’t make it for dinner tonight.” You’ve got to be kidding me, and I thought this day couldn’t get any worse. “What fucking thing?” “Some band stuff, I don’t know.” I was really annoyed right now. “Then why doesn’t Alex have to go?” she shrugged. “I have no idea, Em. But we planned something really nice.” I sighed. “I’m not coming, I still don’t feel well.” “You really can’t cancel. Alex and I planned this boat trip to that little island to have dinner there.” She looked at me with puppy eyes and I had to eat anyways so.. “Okay okay. Give me half an hour.”
When I was ready I walked over to Ashley and Alex’ beach house. Just when I was about to knock, Ashley opened the door. “Oh, you’re ready. Perfect! C’mon Lex.” Alex put his arm around her waist and we walked to the boat that was waiting for us. I hated seeing Alex and Ashley being all cute like that. It made me really miss Jack, even though he forgot my birthday –just like everyone else.
“Are we almost there? I’m hungry.” I said. “It can’t be long anymore.” Alex answered. He whispered something in Ashley’s ear what made her giggle. I rolled my eyes and looked at the stars above us. “We’re here.” I heard Ashley say and I looked up. Alex and Ashley stood there, with a huge smile on their face. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” they both shouted suddenly. Ashley pulled me into a hug. “You guys did remember?” I was completely overwhelmed and hadn't seen this coming. “Ofcouse we did, silly.” Ashley laughed. When she let go of me, Alex hugged me tightly as well. “Congratulations.” He said. “Thanks.” The only thing missing now was Jack. Ashley handed me an envelope. “You get your real present tomorrow, but right now, you have to open this.” I opened the envelope and read the letter that was inside. Dear Emily, I recognized Jack’s handwriting immediately. You must be very mad at me right now for not being there with you. I hope Alex and Ashley haven’t been too annoying. Anyways, you have the right to be angry with me. Because, my love, I lied to you. There’s even more.. I let Ashley and Alex lie to you FOR me. But I wanna make it up to you. Follow the path of candles and find me. Happy birthday! Love, Jack. I looked up and saw candles lighting up a part of the beach. Ashley and Alex were still grinning like fools and both nodded towards the candles. “Go.” Ashley smiled. I hugged her once more and ran off the boat, following the path of candles.
I felt my heart racing in my chest, Jack didn’t forget my birthday, he’d planned this all along! There was a big smile on my face and when the path ended I held my breath. “Oh my god..” I whispered. Right there at the beach stood a small table for two. There were candles and rose petals everywhere. Suddenly I felt two arms around my waist. “Happy birthday.” Jack whispered in my ear.
