My phone buzzed a couple of seconds later again.

Soccer pitch at 11?
I looked over at the clock above the fridge to see it was already 10:45 am. But it wasn't far from here, 10 minutes, I think.

Okay.
I put my phone back in my purse. "I gotta go, bye!" I said while taking my coffee with me. "Oh, can I have the rest of your donut?" Jack looked at me with puppy eyes. "Sure." I rolled my eyes. "Hey, where are you going?" Emily asked. "Alex wants to talk, see you later!" I hurried out the door and made my way to the soccer pitch. Alex was already there. He sat cross-legged on the grass. When I came to sit next to him, he didn't say anything. He just looked at the grass. I didn't know what to say either, so I just sat there quiet beside him. The last time I sat here with Alex was when I told him I had to move to New York. That was the hardest conversation we had ever had. I remember that I just started crying before I'd even said anything and he didn't ask questions. He just held me and let me cry in his shoulder. "What are you thinking about?" Alex whispered, finally looking at me. "The last time we sat here together." He looked away, staring at the grass again. Then something unexpected happened. He started crying. "Alex?" I said softly. After a minute, he looked up. It hurt seeing him like this. I decided to do the exact same thing as he did so many years ago. I just held him and let him cry in my lap. After a couple of minutes he started speaking. "I'm so sorry." Tears were still rolling over his cheeks. "I messed up. I'm so sorry, Ashley." I knew he was talking about last night. "You don't have to feel bad, Alex. You can kiss whoever you want, we're just friends. Please, don't feel bad." I wanted to make him feel better, so I was not going to tell him how much it had actually hurt me. “But I did mess up, Ashley. I don’t want to be just friends with you. I like you too much for that. And honestly, I thought I had a chance. But now I totally blew it.” I didn’t say anything, I didn’t know what to say. Part of me just wanted to throw myself at him and kiss him. “Please, say something.” He whispered sadly. My heart broke when I heard his voice. “Ash..” A tear fell down my cheek. He wiped it away with his thumb. “What’s wrong?” he was still whispering. “I don’t know. It’s just the first time you call me Ash, just like you always called me when we were kids.” I smiled through my tears. “I’m sorry about last night, too. I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did. I just think..” I stopped for a second. “I think that I also like you too much to be just friends, Lex.” I was whispering too. He smiled a bit. “You called me Lex.” “I did.” I smiled. He took my hand. “I just don’t wanna rush things. I’m only just getting to know you better and..” “How about we go on a date tonight?” he grinned. I loved his grin, it was just way too cute. “Okay, sounds great.” “I’ll pick you up at 7.” “I’m looking forward to it, Mr. Gaskarth.” I laughed. “I liked it better when you called me Lex.” He smiled. “See you tonight, Lex.” I gave him a kiss on his cheek and walked back to the apartment with a huge smile on my face.
