Confessions and Confusion
Alex's POV
As I look back to see Zack carrying Laura into the restaurant, I feel a little pang in my chest. I mean I'm pretty sure I'm gay, but I still kind of like her. Ugh. Emotions. They just confuse everything. That's probably why I'm seen as such a slut. Oh well, it's easier for people to get that impression than for me to tell the truth.
We sit down in a booth really only made for four people, so poor little Laura is squished between Zack and Rian.
"Hey!" She says. "Just because I'm little doesn't mean I have to sit in the middle does it? Why don't we make this hulk over here get squished?"
"Too bad, kiddo. You're the smallest, and if you're gonna make me carry you places than the least you can do is sit inbetween me and Rian." Zack replied, ruffling her hair.
My hands tighten at my sides, my blood boiling that they're already so close and I couldn't even get her to kiss me.
"Lexy? You okay bro?" Jack whispered in my ear.
"Yeah I'm okay. Thanks though, man." I whispered back, giving him a little smile. If there is evidence that I'm gay, it's how I feel about Jack, my best friend. But it's pretty obvious that Laura likes him. And I think he's straight. Ugh, my life.
As the meal progresses, we're all just making empty conversation. But it's nice anyways.
"So Rian, how's Cassadee?" I say, poking him.
"Oh we're great!" He exclaims, beaming.
"So Ri, how is it to be the only taken guy in the band?" Laura says. Ugh, she's so frustrating and amazing.
"Hey!" Zack, Jack, and I exclaim all at once.
"No one can refuse this sexy body!" Jack says, dancing around in his seat. I can't help but laugh and agree.
Zack remains silent. I hope he's okay, I know it bugs him that he's single. Plus I can't be sure, but I think he might have a thing for Laura. I sure hope not though, because it'll break his heart that he can't have her.
"Let's head back to the bus, okay guys?" Jack suggests.
"Sure." is the consensus, except for Laura who glances at Zack and says,
"We'll be right along. I just need to talk to Zack for a minute."
Laura's POV
The other guys leave, with me and Zack remaining at the table. I don't know what's up with him, but he's really not himself. He won't even look at me.
"Zacky?" I say, my voice pleading, "Will you please tell me what's wrong? I'm really worried about you. You've done a lot to help me and protect me, and I'll be damned if I don't do the same for you."
He turns to me slightly, with a pained expression on his face. What's so bad that's causing him to be like this? It hurts to see him so sad.
"I-I guess I'm just worried about you Laura. I don't want you to get hurt, and even though you clearly belong here with us, with how well you fit in, I just don't think I could take seeing you be more upset because of something happening here."
What is he talking about? What's gonna happen to hurt me? "Zack, what do you mean? I appreciate the sentiment, but what are you afraid of?"
His face darkens. "I'm talking about you. You like Jack don't you? And with Alex earlier....I just can't stand it. No offense, but it is weird to have a fifteen year old girl hanging out with all of us old guys."
Wow. How did he even figure that out? "Zack, is it really that obvious that I like Jack? Not that it matters, I know nothing will come of it. I wouldn't even try anything, I know it wouldn't be okay. And Alex is just kidding around, being silly. He doesn't mean anything by it. I know it's kind of a weird situation, but you have to admit I'm better off here than I was at home right?"
"You don't get it Laura!" He exclaims, slamming his hand on the table. I'm cringing in the corner of the booth, afraid. "I know YOU won't do anything, but who's gonna stop THEM? You're only fifteen for the love of god."
"Zack, you're scaring me! What's gotten into you?"
"You have, dammit!" He almost shouts, hovering over me. Why isn't there anyone else in this restaurant besides the cook who is also the waiter, currently back in the kitchen out of earshot? "It's all about you! You're driving me crazy!"
"I-I'm so sorry Zack. I'll leave, you'll be better off."
"No! That's not the point," he says, gripping my arm really tightly, bruises already forming. "I have to protect you. I'm the only one good enough for you. Why can't you just see that I care about you!"
With that last sentence my eyes go wide. That's what's going on here. He.....likes me. Romantically. What the hell? This has never happened before....I'm the weird ugly girl that no one notices. Not the girl that rockstars fall for. However, I'm still scared. He's still acting crazy.
Hovering over me in the booth, I can smell the alchohol coming off of his breath. Shit, I'm in trouble. I couldn't fend off Zack sober, but if he wants to hurt me, it's going to happen. Where is someone when you really need them?
"Zack? What the fuck do you think you're doing? Let her go!" Comes a shout from the doorway. I look over to see my savior, Alex Gaskarth wander over and start pulling on Zack's arm that has a death grip on me. Unwillingly, Zack lets me go. I scramble under the table and get behind Alex.
"Laura, go outside. The other guys are out there. Just give me a minute to talk to Zack." I follow his instructions, noting the hard edge in his voice.
Looking over my shoulder, I see Alex sit across from Zack, giving his friend a worried glare. I decide that I've got to get out of here. I'm so hurt right now. I wander outside, and panic when a voice from the dark says, "Laura? You little bitch, what are you doing here?"
