A Life of the Plain and the Simple

Sixteen

"Stell, calm down. With all the babies around here I'm sure everyone is used to hearing the news by now."

"I know, Jack, I'm just worried about complications and.. Ugh."

A small smile formed on my lips as I pulled my wife into my arms. Truthfully, I was scared of the complications as well, but she did great with Isabelle and there's no need to feel like she won't do great with the twins, either. She's too strong to let this weigh her down. Besides, if complications do happen, she'll be on bed rest and I'll hire someone to keep an eye on her at all times. Things are different now than they were with Izzy. We're older, more mature and we can face this a little better.

I gave her a small kiss on the forehead before letting us inside of my old house. Mom and dad were sitting in the kitchen with uncle Zack. Dad and Zack were drinking a beer and mom was sipping on wine. It was the weekend, so they must have found comfort in having a break from life.

"Oh, Jack! What a nice surprise!" My mom sat her glass down and ran to take me in her arms. After a sloppy kiss on my cheek, she pulled Stella in for a hug. "No Izzy today?"

"She's spending the day with uncle Tom," Stella grinned. "Figured they could have some practice."

"It's crazy, isn't it?" Mom pulled me and Stella to the table, making us sit. "I can't believe little Aubree is having a baby!"

"Yeah, it's about time for you two to have another one, don't you think?"

I awkwardly laughed as I held tight to Stella's hand, watching my dad attempt a wink in my direction. He wanted another grandchild as much as I wanted another baby, which I was thankful for. The last time we attempted this it wasn't so easy.

"I'm just glad Nate is taking some time," Zack tipped back his beer. "He hasn't had as much experience in relationships as the rest of you. I hear he's thinking about having Delaney move in with him, though, since Aubree signed her apartment over to him."

"Don't talk about me when I'm not around," I snapped my head to the door just in time to see Nate walk in with a grin on his lips. Go figure he was spending the day with his dad. "We're actually taking a break from packing right now."

He came over and wrapped one arm around Stella then gave me a small high five. Raking his chair across the floor, he sat down beside me and pulled out his phone, probably texting his girlfriend.

"I think it's great that you're getting your own place, Nate," Stella smiled at him. "Seems like we're all getting our lives in order."

"Good luck with that. My kid has a kid and I'm still younger at heart than he is."

Mom rolled her eyes at dad's comment as uncle Zack joined in on the laughter. I snorted to myself, giving Stella's leg a soft squeeze. I was kind of nervous to give them the news with everyone around, but we are one big family so when one of us faces something, so does everyone else.

"Well, about that," I started, giving my mom a smile as I turned my attention to my dad. "I had to take Stella to the doctor and we kind of have some news.."

"Oh no," my mom put her hand over her heart. "Stella, are you okay, honey?"

"I'm fine, Jasmin," Stella giggled. "It's good news."

As my family leaned across the table to get a better look at me, I cleared my throat and let my happiness shine through my eyes. As much as they loved Izzy, I knew they'd love the twins, too.

"Stella's pregnant," I beamed. "With twins!"

My mom put her hand over her face and nearly jumped across the table to hug my wife. Uncle Zack and dad got up, which earned me a pat on the back from Zack and a bear hug from my dad. Even Nate pulled me into his chest to congratulate me.

"I fucking new it," dad breathed, pride all over his face. "I love babies!"

At least they were happy about it. That's all Stella and I ever wanted. It was comforting to know that our families saw us as adults now, ready to make our own decisions. They'd finally set us free.
