Find a Place for Me Again

Twenty-One

Alex and the nurse rushed me into the hospital. I clung onto Alex's hand for dear life. Alex was pried from my hands as I was rushed to a room. The nurses and a doctor got me out of my clothes and into a hospital gown and up into a bed. Alex came in a moment and came to my side. He was dressed in sterile scrubs, gloves, and a mask. I was freaking out and I could tell Alex was about to go over the edge and have an attack.

"Alex you have to breathe," I coached him.

"Don't worry about me, Kenzie. I'm more concerned about you and our baby," he replied.

"Mackenzie, I got here as soon as I could. You were just in this morning," my doctor said as he came into the room, "Do you know when you started going into labor?"

"Maybe an hour and a half ago," I replied before I screamed as I rode through a contraction, crushing Alex's hand in the process.

"We'll get you on an epidural so you can handle to pain of the contractions better. I'll check and see how dilated you are," he replied as he made a call for a nurse.

"How is she," Alex asked.

"She's at three centimeters. She'll need to be close to ten before she can push," the doctor replied.
Two hours later, my epidural has been done and the contractions have been easier for me to take. Matt came up with the rest of the guys. I was still freaking out and so was Alex. I was only 26 weeks along and I was going into labor. Worst of all, I was speeding through my labor. I was worried I'd lose the baby because it might not be able to breathe on its own.

"Alright let's see how she's doing now," the doctor said as a team of nurses behind him.

"So how am I," I asked.

"You're at nine centimeters. We have to have you push now so we can get the baby the help it needs," he replied.

My bed as taken apart and shifted around as the nurses brought in an incubator from the NICU along with a doctor from that wing and a team of nurses. Alex stood at my side, holding onto my hand as I clung to his.

"Alright on the count of three I want you to push, Mackenzie. You have bring your knees to your chest," the doctor instructed, "1...2...3, push!"

I pushed like I was told. I got to relax for ten seconds before I had to repeat the process again. After forty-five minutes, I heard a thump as the baby landed into a blanket.

"It's a boy," one of the nurses said as my son was placed into his incubator.

"Peter," I sighed, my worries consuming me as I cried for him.

I watched as the nurses and the doctor from the NICU put a breathing tube into Peter's nose, hooked him up to an IV, and got him connected to a heart monitor. When the machine was turned on, the room filled with the beeping of his heartbeat. He was alive, Peter lived.

"Mackenzie, we're going to finish up with your delivery and clean you up. After that we'll have to move you to your recovery room.

"When can I see my son," I asked.

"Once you've recovered, we have to monitor you to make sure no complications appear," the doctor replied.

"You'll be fine, Kenzie. So will Peter," Alex kissed my forehead.

"He can't breathe on his own, Alex. He's not alright," I sobbed.
I was in my recovery room, Alex had gone to see the guys to let them know I was able to have visitors. I held Peter's birth certificate in my hands. He was born at 11:48 PM on December 18th. He was born on his father's birthday. I gave Alex a bittersweet present this year. Our son was born 14 weeks premature. I'm so scared that he won't make it through this.

Comments

So I just read what you have of this, and I'm sad to see it was never finished. :(
It's a bit rushed at some parts, but I really like the concept of it. It surprised me that you had him gain his memory back kind of quickly; I thought for sure the twist was going to be he was going to lose it again or something. I found it a bit odd how that was kind of the plot for the first half, and then this second part kind of diverted from it. But I really like what you have of it, it's really sweet. :)
If you ever choose to finish it, I will be here to read. Although I think a final chapter wrap-up would totally work for this, if you're struggling for inspiration. Just a final update to conclude it.
You're a great writer, and so, I just wanted to leave a comment letting you know that, and to show that people are still stumbling across this and reading it. :)
