My Fair Chance

Taking the First Step

"Well that was a lot easier than I thought it'd be," Brooklyn giggled, shoving a chunk of hair behind her. We walked along side each other on the street, our hands still holding the hot cups of coffee we'd purchased after we left the church. We'd just left the flower shop, having booked the exact flowers Cass had picked out and written down for us so they'd be perfect.

"You'd think these people would at least ask for an ID so they know who the flowers are going to."

"I'm more concerned about the fact that we just booked a church for a wedding that isn't even ours."

"Correction," Brooklyn held up her coffee as a way of stopping Alex from speaking, having not even noticed the last part of what he said, "they're going to hold it until Ri and Cass put the money down."

"Ah, yes. How smart of you to remember, my lady."

Brooklyn let another laugh escape her glossed lips and kept her eyes straight ahead of her body. The city was starting to pick up, more people were coming out and the stores on this certain strip were booming with business. Alex's car was another two blocks away, but he didn't mind it. The sweet air made him relax, and just knowing that everyone was watching him walk the street with such a beautiful woman made him smile.

"So did you sleep well last night?"

"You couch is oddly comfortable," she smiled, taking a sip of her coffee. "But I can't wait to get home to my own bed tonight."

"Tonight? Really?" Alex tried to mask the sad look in his eyes. Of course she'd be going home, in one morning, they'd knocked out both of the tasks they were given from the happy couple. "I was just kind of hoping we could celebrate our awesome work."

"Oh.. I'm sorry, I didn't realize," Brooklyn frowned, letting her polished nails dig into the side of her cup. Alex watched as her pearly whites bit into her bottom lip, she was in thought, he knew that. But did she have to be so gorgous while she pondered? "I promised Zack I would hang out with him tonight, but I'm sure he'd understand if I told him you and I were going to hang out. I mean, it's all for wedding stuff, anyway. I'll just see if I can make it up to him today."

"Yeah, sure."

Alex stopped walking as Brooklyn pulled out her cell phone. She easily dialed Zack's number and her lips parted into a smile the moment she said hello. It was odd to see the way they were together. Admittedly, they were a cute almost-couple, but there was something between them that just didn't sit right. Alex would never say it to either of them, but he often wondered if they could sense it and that's why they refused to take their friendship a step further.

Then, he remembered who he was talking about. Sweet, shy Zack. He just didn't have the confidence to ask out someone like Brooklyn. It was understandable, but the longer they stayed in that awkward phase, the harder it got for Alex to not make his move. As of right now, Brooklyn was a single woman. She wasn't, at all, tied down to Zack. But was she worth losing his best friend over? Was she worth putting the band through that kind of Hell?

He watched the way she trwirled her hair and laughed as she spoke to Zack. Her body was flirting with a person who wasn't even there in the flesh. He was jealous, but he reminded himself why she was on the phone with him in the first place. A few moments passed and Brooklyn finally hung up the phone, happily walking back towards him.

"Zack is going to pick me up in about ten minutes," she beamed, tossing some hair behind her shoulder. "I told him I need to be at your place by seven. Is that okay?"

"That sounds perfect," Alex grinned, finishing off what was left in his cup. "Should I pick up some beer?"

"And pizza," Brooklyn added, shifting her weight. "Maybe even a movie? But no chick flicks. They turn me into a sap."

"Beer, pizza and a no chick flick rule? You, Brooklyn, are one in a million."

"Thanks."

"So, uh, I should get going. But I'll see you tonight, okay?"

She nodded her head, and awkwardly waved him off, but Alex wasn't leaving that easily. He bent over and placed a gentle kiss on the center of her cheek, flashed her a smile and began making his way back to his car.

That was Alex's first step to winning Brooklyn over.
