Zack Merrick gripped his steering wheel like his life depended on it. The car wasn't moving, in fact, he was parked outside of Alex's apartment building with a dull ache in his heart that nearly made him sick to his stomach. It wasn't so much the fact that he was at Alex's, he loved going to see his friends, it was more or less the fact that he was dropping the girl he wanted more than anything off with said friend. She sat in the passenger seat with a big grin on her face, her fingers sliding across the screen of her phone with ease. Just from where he was sitting he could see that she was texting the man to let him know she'd arrived.


He knew this was all necessary, the two of them hanging out and spending entirely too much time together, but that didn't mean he was comfortable with it. Zack didn't understand why, but he'd been getting a strange vibe from Alex whenever he brought Brooklyn around. He couldn't blame his friend for being attracted to the girl - She was the most gorgeous person he'd ever met - But Alex had to know better than to go after someone who had finally shown some interest in him, in which he could return.


A part of him was even angry at Rian and Cassadee, for selecting the two of them to take on such serious roles in the wedding. Shouldn't it be Zack walking with Brooklyn? Of course it should. However, he'd have to bite his tongue for the sake of one of his close friends. That souldn't mean he had to bite his tongue when it came to his own personal life. As much as he didn't want to let Brooklyn get out of the car, he knew he had to trust her. For fucks sake, they weren't even dating yet. Zack just wanted the chance to get the girl before someone else could take her away.


He prayed his best friend wouldn't steal her away.


"So, I guess this is where I get off," Brooklyn giggled, shoving her phone deep into her over-night bag. "I'm really glad you let me off the hook for tonight. Alex and I just have a few more things to sort out for the wedding. It's so romantic, isn't it? The fact that we could send Ri and Cass away so we could help them with the best night of their life? I just love, love."


"I agree, love is a beautiful thing," Zack forced a smile, though it was obvious there was a pause in his thoughts and his words. Brooklyn was always the type to follow her heart, which is why Zack had a feeling Alex was trying to work his way into her own. "Just don't have too much fun, okay?"


"I promise, Zacky. No more than five beers, all right?"


"You guys are drinking? I thought it was just wedding planning?"


"You can't expect us to not have a little fun, can you? I promise I'll behave. Text me when you get home so I can talk to you. I'm going to miss you, sir."


"I'll miss you more. And hey, when Alex drinks, he gets a little... Well, just let me know if you need me to come pick you up, okay?"


Brooklyn rolled her eyes, almost playfully, and pushed her bag up on her arm. Zack was afraid he'd said something wrong, but when the girl leaned in and planted a soft kiss on his cheek, he knew she completely understood his nerves and wouldn't hold them against him. Now he could only hope that she would respect his wishes.


"Silly, you are," she grinned, her hand pushing open the car door. Zack watched her slide out and rose an eyebrow as she poked her head back in, a smile still playing on her lips. "If you want me all to yourself, all you have to do is say so."


With that, Brooklyn shut the door and made her way to the enterance to Alex's building. Zack's heart was pounding against his chest as she disappeared from his sight. Did he hear her correctly? The smile spread across his cheeks informed him that he did. Brooklyn was giving him the green light. It was time to make his move. Zack knew the moment he saw her again, he'd make her his. There was nothing Alex, or any other human being in the world, could do to stop him now.
