Hold On Till May

104 Days Before

"Sleeping Beauty, wake up!" A body jumped up and down on Aurora's bed, making her jolt out of bed from fear and confusion. The curtains were wide open, making the sunlight that came through hurt her eyes more than she could bare. "Good, glad you're up." The body sat down next to the girl on her bed and leaned up against her white, cushioned headboard.

"What are you doing here, Al?" Aurora grunted and tried adjusting to the light while covering her eyes with her arm. "And what time is it?" She yawned and stretched wide without realizing that she hit her best friend in the face. The boy pulled out his phone and confirmed that it was only a ten past six. "Since when do you wake up this early?" Aurora scrunched up her face in confusion and laid her head against Alex's arm, trying to wake up, but she couldn't seem to keep her eyes open.

"First day of senior year, Princess." Alex smiled thinking of all of the possibilities that could happen throughout this school year. 'Princess' was only a name that Aurora's four boys could call her since anyone else would get nailed in the gut. When she had met Alex in grade-school, he had trouble pronouncing 'Aurora' and insisted on calling her 'Princess' and 'Sleeping Beauty' instead. The name was reserved for Alex's use only until high school when the other three boys known as Jack, Zack, and Rian came along. Nowadays, Aurora gets mad if her parents even refer to her as anything other than Aurora.

"Good Lord!" Alex grabbed his friends face in his hands with a look of terror on his face. "Has anyone ever told you that you look like a red-haired Gremlin when you first wake up?" He pushed a strain of hair away from his friends face and laughed.

"Yes," Aurora punched him in the stomach without any force, "you have. Day after day after day." She rolled her eyes. Alex clutched his stomach in attempt to act like she actually hurt him.

"You know I'm kidding, right? There was no real need to punch me." Alex kissed Aurora on top of the head before she made her way off of the bed and into her closet. Aurora pulled out a simple pair of black skinny jeans, a Blink-182 t-shirt that she had cut into a tank-top, and a lightweight black cardigan. She held it up to Alex before heading into the bathroom to take a shower, he simply nodded in acceptance to her choice of clothing. When Aurora was exiting her room, Alex noticed red on her legs and didn't even have to think about what it was. He had seen that same shade of crimson on her arms, stomach, and thighs many times before in the previous years, but not for two years.

"Dammit," Alex grumbled to himself and punched an area of the bed with great force. What am I supposed to do if she's cutting again? I can't keep failing her. Fucking shit, Alex, you shouldn't be allowed to be her friend. Alex's thoughts were getting the best of him and beating him up, telling him that he was the reasoning behind Aurora's red-marks. Whatever self-inflicted wounds were on Aurora's body, Alex always blamed himself for not being the hero and fixing her time after time. The last time Aurora had cut was spring break of sophomore year when Alex had to take her to the emergency room to get stitches over her wrists. She swore right then and there on their friendship that she never cut again. She said she wouldn't because she couldn't stand to make Alex cry, which was something he rarely did.

"Wanna call Jack?" Aurora asked once she stepped back into her room and spotted Alex on her bed with a bowl of cereal watching re-runs of Full House.

"Sure," Alex's voice was angry, but Aurora didn't think a thing about it. "WAKE THE FUCK UP, ASSFACE!" Alex screamed into his phone with a mouth full of Captain Crunch that made colorful milk drool out of his mouth. Alex carelessly threw his phone to the floor below him and continued to indulge himself in the children's cereal and a '90s sitcom.

"So it's gonna be one of those days, I see." Aurora commented while she flipped her hair and piled it into a sloppy bun on the very top of her head. She started putting powder on her face while Alex left the room to take his bowl back to the kitchen. While he was out, she turned off Full House to blare Frou Frou through the speakers.

So how do I do normal
The smile I fake - the permanent wave of cue cards and fix it kits
Can't you tell, I'm not myself
I'm a slow motion accident
Lost in coffee rings and fingerprints
I don't wanna feel anything
But I do
and it all comes back to you

Alex sat backdown on the messy bed and texted Jack while listening closely to the song, thinking that it had to be some sort of message. He sighed and leaned back, looking up at the lilac colored ceiling. He knew exactly what he saw on his best friends thigh, even if he didn't want to believe it. No matter what, he had to address the matter. "Aurora?" Alex asked in a small voice and propped his body to look at her reflection in the mirror.

"Yes, dear?" Her voice was bouncy while she put on her liquid eyeliner. She smiled at him, thinking that it was going to be something about how great the year was going to be. This year they would all be graduating and off to start actual lives other than what they new in Maryland. Plus, All Time Low was finally getting serious about their music and hopefully, soon they would be signed. Aurora had all of the hope in the world for them and was going to be with them every single step of the way.

"Don't let this be a repeat of sophomore year." Alex warned before punching Jack's number into his phone since he had yet to respond to the ten texts and two calls. Aurora's eyes shot open and her jaw dropped in the slightest way. She closed her eyes tight, knowing that she had been caught and should've been more cautious while getting out of bed this morning. Once she opened her mouth to explain herself, Alex stopped her. "We'll talk about it after school, I don't want today to be more ruined than it already is." Alex was disappointed, as anyone else would be. Knowing that his best friend - his soulmate, for fuck's sake - was harming herself without reasoning made him physically sick to his stomach. Alex wondered how long she had been doing it without telling him or any of the guys and why exactly she was doing it this time. Alex finally walked up behind her and planted a kiss on top of her head to let her know that he wasn't as angry as he seemed. "We'll fix this." He promised.
