You say loves overrated, I say its complicated

Day 1 - The Day we met

“Olivia come on we have got to meet everyone down by the water!” I hear Daniel yell to me from the living room.

I walk out of the kitchen, cooler in hand, “Jesus Daniel give me 2 minutes a day to get food and drinks why don’t you.”

He grabs the keys to the car we share, “well sorry I have a friend coming from Baltimore today and I want to beat him there.”

“You have friends?” I retort with a smirk.

“Yeah I do,” he replies with a frown.

We drive the 5 minutes to the bay and stake out our spot for the huge bonfire we are having tonight. Luckily for Daniel we beat the whole town to the bay today or else he would have a coronary or something. To get our spot we usually have to get to the water at about 8am in the summer but that didn’t need to happen today luckily. As our friends begin to arrive I realize we don’t have propane for the grill we bought so I stole the keys from my brother and run to the store. When I get back I see there are a few extra people at our bonfire then I remember inviting so I slowly make my way to the area we are in.

“SSSSsSisterrrrrr,” Daniel says loudly since he was already pretty drunk, “these are my friends Alex, Jack, Rian and Zack. They are from Baltimore and are in a famous band.”

“Nice to meet you guys,” I say half smiling while not really looking up at them.

I then head to a vacant stump by the fire and sit by myself. You could say I didn’t have too many friends, not that I minded much, since I never do anything teenager related anymore.

“Can I sit next to you?” one of the guys my brother introduced me to says.

I look up and see these beautiful green eyes and shaggy brown hair which cause me to lose my train of thoughts for a second before I answered, “uh, uh sure.”

“I’m Zack by the way,” he answers holding out his hand.

“Olivia.”

“Nice to meet you Olivia. So why are you sitting here alone with all of these people here?”

“None of them want to talk to me. I am here to get my brother home at the end of the night.”

“Why wouldn’t they want to talk to a pretty girl like you?”

Is he hitting on me? Or am I just overreacting?

“Because of my past and I suppose because I work 2 jobs.”

“Well I want to talk to you Olivia. Tell me about yourself.”

“Oh you don’t want to know anything about me sweetheart. I am not the best person to get to know.”

“Try me,” he retorts with a smile.

I look at him and sigh, “promise not to judge me?”

He nods. “I work at a gentlemen's club, have since I was 14, and I don’t have any time for a social life since I am the one paying all the bills in my house. So all of these people who are here used to be my friends until they found out my secret and I stopped showing up to social events.”

“Wow, you don’t look old enough to be working all of the time.”

“I’m 16, perfectly old enough to have adult activities,” I answer with a shrug.

“That is not old enough to go through what you are going through Olivia,” his voice begins to rise.

“Shh... please just leave me alone in this corner. Go have fun!” I say frightened.

He then takes out a sharpie and writes his number on a piece of paper and hands it to me. “Call or text me anytime you need to talk Olivia. I need to go get my drunk friends home now. Stay safe and I better hear from you.” Then he walks away.

Did that just happen? Or am I just daydreaming again? I sure cannot keep this smile off my face that is for sure.

I am just hanging out at this bonfire with Daniel and his beach buddies when I see this gorgeous blonde walking our way. Then Daniel starts to talk. It sounds like this is his sister. Wow how can an asshole like Daniel (I’m saying this in a friendly way) have such a gorgeous looking sister? It takes me awhile but eventually I get enough courage to go and talk to her. By the end of our conversation I am so intrigued to learn more about her so I give her my number hoping she will contact me again.

About an hour after I got the guys back to the van for Matt to start the drive to California I feel my phone vibrate and it is her who has text me.

O: Hi Zack, it’s Olivia. Thank you for listening and not judging tonight. I just wanted to let you know (mostly because Daniel was super worried that you would care :p) that we made it home safe. Have a good night :)

When I read the text my heart skips a beat. This girl is so sweet. You can tell she has had a shitty life which makes me want to fix it all. I decide to reply.

Z: Hey, it was no problem. Did your night turn out okay?

O: Eh, it was alright :) much better than working all night that is for sure.

Z: Good. You made my night as designated “get my underaged friends home” a little better. I better go stake out a spot to sleep. Text you tomorrow :)

O: Alright night new friend :)

I can tell this is going to be an awesome friendship already. Hopefully it will turn into more since you know she fucking gorgeous but I won’t get my hopes up.
