They Were A Dangerous Pair

Chapter 4

Our first breakup was over something small. We were fifteen. I lost a friend and a boyfriend for a short while. It was a Friday and Zack had thrown a party. I was invited and Zack had told me to bring my friends along. I didn’t want to at first but he eventually got me to go. Lisa and Holly arrived at my house right before we had to leave, wearing dresses that almost showed their asses.
I didn’t tell them that their dresses were way too short but I heard them scoff when they saw me wearing a pair of converse, black skinny jeans and a Green Day tee. I rolled my eyes at them and we began to walk to Zack’s house. Because they were wearing heels it took us about double the time it normally takes me to walk to Zack’s house but we got their eventually.
By the time we walked in the party was in full swing but Alex was standing in the kitchen just like he told me he would be. He leaned in and kissed me, I could tell that someone was watching us so I turned around to see Lisa standing there with a drink in her hand. I stood away from Alex and told him that I was going to find Matt, another friend of theirs.
On my way to find Matt I walked past Jack pressing Holly against a wall with his hand halfway up her dress, they dated for a few months and Jack was really upset when they broke up. We all figured that they were only in a relationship for the sex but everyone could see that Jack was really falling for Holly and she too noticed and broke it off right away.
I found Matt sitting in Zack’s bedroom reading a book. Reading a book at a party. “Dammit Matt, why are you reading a book at a party?” I asked as I sat next to him. “Because I don’t want to be down there with the rest of those loud, hormonal teenagers.” Matt shrugged. “Why aren’t you wearing a dress?” I shook my head and laughed. “It’s a party, not a wedding.” Matt laughed at that comment. “Come on, let’s go downstairs and say hi to the rest of the guys.” I said to Matt. He sighed and put his book down.
The two of us made our way downstairs. We ran into Zack first who was making sure that no one was vomiting on the carpet. “Way too many people showed up. I’m never throwing party at my house again.” Zack groaned as he continued to keep his eyes on the people around him. “Take it easy Zack.” Matt chuckled.
We walked down the stairs and I noticed that Jack wasn’t shoving Holly against the wall anymore so I guessed that they’d made their way into one of the rooms, hopefully Zack’s room, that’d teach him not to throw a part and invite half of the school, but more than likely one of the guest rooms.
Before we were able to reach the kitchen and get something to drink we ran into Rian. Literally, ran into Rian. The four of us stumbled. “Hey Imogen.” Cassadee said with a smile. “Hey, how’s it going?” I asked her. “Pretty good, we were just about to get going. We’ll see you on Monday.” Cassadee gave me a quick hug and Rian finished up his conversation with Matt and then they exited the house party.
Matt and I had finally made our way to the kitchen but before I could get something to drink I saw something that I hoped I’d never see. Lisa was kissing Alex and Alex was kissing her back. His hand was travelling up her dress. Tears started to fall from my eyes as I walked out of the kitchen and ran out of the house. I could hear Matt yelling at Alex but I didn’t care.
I kept walking until I got to the park. I sat on one of the swings and swung back and forth slowly as tears ran down my face and onto my jeans. Alex was kissing another girl and what made it worse was that it was Lisa; she was mean to be one of my best friends. She didn’t know that I was with Alex but Alex should have at least tried to push her off of him.
It didn’t matter now, I had convinced myself that we’d broken up and we weren’t going to get back together. I got up from the swing and began to make my way home. My parents were asleep and I realised that once I went into the kitchen and caught a glance at the clock on the wall. It was 1am; I must have been at the park for a good two hours without knowing it. I got myself something to eat and then went into the living room and put on some random movie to watch. Bad idea. It happened to be one of the movies that Alex and I had watched as kids and it made memories come back, things that I didn’t want to remember.
I turned the movie off and ran up to my room. My back slid down the door and tears began to run down my face for the third time that night. I hated feeling like this. I hated feeling so empty and broken and sad.
It’d turned into so much more than that. I hadn’t seen Alex in about two months. I would go to school, ignore everyone, come home, ignore my parents, ignore Alex and stay up until 4am remembering how great things used to be when I was with Alex. It had just become a natural think for me to push people away. I didn’t know how Alex was coping; I didn’t know anything about him.
I missed Alex. I missed not waking up and seeing him already awake next to me. I missed waiting for school to end just so I could walk home with him. I missed studying for tomorrow’s test with Alex. The only person that I’d spoken to in the past two months had been Matt. Rian was busy with Cassadee, Holly was busy with Jack, Jack was busy with Holly, Lisa had fucked off to somewhere, Alex was probably with Lisa and Zack was working on his muscles or something…I forgot. Matt would call once a week, maybe twice, to make sure that I hadn’t done anything stupid. I knew that it was just Alex asking Matt to ask me these questions but I answered them anyway
