JACK

I wouldn’t consider my home a mansion; however, my family and I lived in luxury. My parents were big shots, my being a lawyer while my dad being a doctor in the prenatal ward. The ups of having both my parents working in high-class jobs was that there was plenty of money to go to our benefits, including me attended BSA; however, there also the downs. Since May and Joe were moved out and starting their own families, me being the youngest left me home alone most of the time. I maybe get to see my parents three times a week, and that’s stretching it. Rian and Zack were mostly company, but with Alex, I was taking in a whole breath of fresh air. Especially since I would be going to that bonfire with him tomorrow.

Tonight was one of the “three” nights I got to spend time with my parents and have dinner with them. My dad attended to reading the paper at the ass of the table while mom and I hovered over the stove to prepare dinner. I was dicing up lettuce and tomatoes for the salad when I decided on explaining to mom my plans for the next day. “Um, mom?” I perked up softly. Mom gave me her attention by mumbling a ‘hm?’. “A friend of mine invited me to a bonfire tomorrow… I was wondering if you’d be okay if I went?” Mom raised her brows at me, looking in my direction instead of the direction of the meat that was searing in the cast iron skillet.
“Why are you asking permission to see Rian and Zack? You know I don’t care if you see him or not.” she scoffed. I chuckled softly, setting aside the chopped greens and tomatoes I had worked on.

“It’s actually not with Rian and Zack. It’s with a new friend of mine I met at the burger joint in town.” This surprised both mom and dad because I heard dad’s paper rest against the table.
“Not Rian and Zack? A friend you met a burger joint? Son, you know we don’t condone you talking to strangers.” Dad mumbled. I rolled my eyes, taking hold of another head of lettuce to begin chopping it.

“Dad, please, I’m sixteen going on seventeen – the whole “stranger danger” concept is history. Plus, how else am I going to make friends if I don’t talk to “strangers”?” My comment made mom giggle.

“That is true, Bassam. I wouldn’t have married you if I didn’t talk to a stranger.” she turned to him and winked, dad chuckling.

“Touché, you two.” he laughed. “Well then, why don’t you tell us about this friend. What’s their name? What’re they like?” Just thinking about Alex made my cheeks go hot, but I had to keep that contained, for my parents had no clue I was gay. In fact, if they did, I’d be six feet under.
My parents weren’t exactly the most down to Earth kind of parents. They didn’t like the whole “gay” thing whenever they saw it on T.V., and as a kid, I did have religion shoved down my throat. It was hard growing up because once I started figuring out and understanding that I liked men rather women and didn’t really believe in religion, I had to develop a safe inside of myself. My sexuality and religion had to be locked away because if my parents ever found out, I would be shunned. I wouldn’t even put it passed them to disown me.

“His name is Alex, and he works at Peter and Son’s, the burger joint in town. Rian, Zack, and I went there to grab a bite to the other day, and Alex, being the only waiter, got to talking with me. I ate lunch with him today, actually, hence why he invited me to the bonfire tomorrow. He enjoys music and bands like me, and even was accepted to BSA, but he couldn’t get in because of money issues.” Mom nodded at my description of Alex, assuming she was approving all that I told of Alex.

“Well, he seems like a pretty nice boy. How old is he?”

“He’s one year older than me; he graduates this year.” I placed all the chopped vegetables in a bowl, adding oil and seasoning to it to create a dressing, then started to toss the salad to start serving it. I grabbed the salad dish and started putting it on the placed plates on the table. Dad was now looking at me to speak.

“Why doesn’t he come for dinner sometime next week? Your mum and I don’t have late shifts on Tuesday; how about then?” he offered. I perked up with a wide smile.
“Really? You’d want him to come for dinner?”

“Why, of course!” mom chirped in as she started putting the sliced steak on each of our plates. I was smiling from ear to ear, the excitement bubbling in my guts.

“Wow, um, thanks! I’ll let him tomorrow when he picks me up!” Soon, all the plates were served, and all three of us sat around the table. I was still smiling a mile a minute.

“Now,” dad perked up, “let’s say grace.” With that, we all bowed our heads.

Alex texted me that he would be at my place in twenty minutes. I took the time for him to get to my home to start getting dressed. It was pretty hot, so I decided on a Ravens tank, my basketball shorts, a snapback, and my flip flops. I packed a drawstring bag with my phone, portable charger, bug spray, and my headphones – just in case it got too loud for my liking. I went downstairs and sat on the window seat of my large living room window to watch for Jenna’s car. Mom stepped into the room with her pant suit on and hair tied in a tight bun. I knew she had a late night at the firm, and it made me upset that she wouldn’t be here to meet Alex. Dad was already at work, since 8 in the morning, working with the pregnant mothers. Mom chuckled. “Waiting for the man of the hour, aye?” she said as she grabbed her brief case. I rolled my eyes with a giggle.

“Yup, waiting for my limo to take me to this grand bonfire.” Mom walked over and patted my hat-clad head.

“Just be careful, yeah? No drinking and definitely no smoking. You know your father and I have senses as high as a hawk, so you better be good.”

“Yes, mom, I know.” I grumbled. I knew damn well I’d be drinking and smoking; I had my baggie of pot from Rian stuffed in my sock along with my lighter in my bag. I wouldn’t forget my essentials, but for mom, I had to act like the innocent, straight, little preacher boy. Mom soon kissed my cheek and made her exit. Just as she pulled out of the driveway, Jenna’s run-down Beetle came trudging down the road. I got up and hurried outside. Alex rolled down the passenger side window and shouted out,

“Come on, Jack, we’re already late!” I ran to the back, hopped in quickly, and we were on our way.

The bonfire was at the kid Kellin’s place, his backyard surrounded by woods that you would found in your typical, cheesy horror films. The bonfire was at large in the core of the circle of lawn chairs. A few kids already occupied some of the chairs, kids I didn’t know since they probably attended Dulaney. Alex walked alongside me with a smile. “You going to have fun tonight?” he asked with a giggle. I nodded happily.

“Sure will. But… before we begin this night, can I ask who else is here? Just so I know who I’m “partying” with?” Alex chuckled and patted my back.

“Over there is Taylor Jardine – we don’t talk much since we had a messy break up my sophomore year,” he said with a dry, sarcastic chuckle, “Next to her is her new chew toy, Tyler Joseph, who goes to a school in Annapolis – how they met is beyond me since that’s a fucking hour away. Lastly, there’s Chrissy Costanza. She’s really awesome. She’s a senior like me, but we barely get to talk since our schedules are like total opposites. Overall, you’ll like them all if you really get to know them.” Alex’s explanation was pretty simple, and I hoped to meet the whole gang as the night went on.

Kellin stepped over to me, arm around the mentioned Vic Funentes, with a smile. “Hey! You must be Jack? Jenna told me you were Alex’s date.” The word date made my cheeks go hot.
“U-Um, yeah!”

“You got to Baltimore School of Art? That’s really cool! I didn’t really have the confidence to audition.” Vic said shyly under Kellin’s wing. Kellin sighed and kissed Vic’s cheek, cooing something sweetly in his ear.

“Well,” Kellin perked right back up, “if you weren’t introduced to us by Jenna, I’m Kellin Bostwick, and this is my boyfriend, Vic Fuentes.” Vic waved hesitantly, and I got the impression he was extremely shy. I waved back with a smile. Kellin and Vic proceeded to walk back over to the bonfire, fingers laced, and begin kissing in the chair they shared together. I watched them intently, my stomach into pretzel knots. Watching them caused my mind to begin hallucinating; Kellin and Vic morphed into Alex and I, us hugging and kissing each other hard. I had to shake my head like a mad man to get the image out of my head. I couldn't think like that – it was wrong!

“You okay, Jack?” Alex's voice rung through my ear. I jumped in surprise, turning to him shakily.

“U-Um, yeah! I'm okay. Shoot, um, why don't we head over there and start having fun?”

ALEX
At first, I thought that this bonfire would be fun. I thought I could take this time and bond with Jack, someone I really wanted to get to know. However, an hour into the bonfire, Jack got comfortable with Taylor and Tyler, the biggest potheads in school, and decided to roll up a joint of Mary Jane and get to smoking. It was then a domino effect because Jenna joined in, followed by Vic and Kellin. Chrissy just sat there, taking a few sips of alcohol here and there as it was passed around, headphones jammed in. I just sat back, watching as all my companions got stoned and wasted, for a bottle of vodka and whiskey was passed around like candy. I wasn't a drinker or smoker; I never liked it. I lost all respect for it after Tom left. As the aroma of skunk weed and booze entered my nose, it increased my desire to just go home and sleep.
I waddled across the grassy hard and around the ginormous fire pit to make it over to Jenna who was resting in Jack’s lap?! The sight made my blood boil. I stormed over and slapped Jenna's shoulder. She snapped her head around quickly, a joint dangling from between her lips. Groaning, she removed it and blew the thick, egg white smoke right into my beet red face. “What, Lex?”

“I want to go home.” I growled. Jenna laughed, taking the half empty bottle of vodka from Taylor's hands and took a swig. I snatched the bottle and threw it to the ground, the remains pouring into the soil. Everyone gasped as if I just threw a new born baby down to the ground.
“Dude, what is your problem!” Tyler snapped, but I ignored his drunk-self.

“I. Want. To. Go. Home.” Now, steam was leaking from my ears. Jenna rolled her eyes, wrapping a lanky arm around Jack’s neck.

“Too bad. I'm staying until it's over.” Jack was now looking into my eyes, laughing at my demeanor. I would be lying if I said it didn't pain me to be laughed at. He took the joint from Jenna's hands and took a sip.

“I don't like this at all. This isn't even fun! I want to go- “

“Dude!” Now, Jack was butting in with an angry tone, “Just because you're a little pussy, doesn't mean Jenna has to leave. Just shut the fuck up, sit down, or walk home!” Everyone, including my best fucking friend, started laughing and clapping for Jack. I teared up, trembling from limb to limb.

“Fine.” I whimpered. I snatched my phone from my chair and stormed up to the front of the house to storm down the street. My home was a good mile away, so I knew I would be walking for a while. I put my headphones in my ears, blared my Blink album on my iTunes, and started my long walk to my home. I would turn back from time to time to see if any of my true friends were coming to save the day but to no avail. Behind me was just the wind brushing against me.
The longer I walked, the more tears poured down my cheeks. I felt so defeated, so mutilated by the fact that my friends went against me. It didn’t matter that they were drunk or high; someone, especially Jenna, should have understood my condition towards alcohol and drugs, stopped doing the toxins, and taken me back home when I asked. I meant nothing back there, and it tore me to pieces.

I was turning the corner to the strip where the joint was occupying when a car drove up beside me. It was slow, and it was making my stomach turn. I was scared for my life, so I started picking up the pace; however, as my pace quickened, so did the stroll of the car. I finally started to run. It was a terrible decision since my breathing was utter shit, but I was not dying today. No way in hell. “Alex, what the hell are you doing?!” a familiar voice boomed from the vehicle, over Adam’s Song that played in my earbud. I stopped, turning to find Chrissy’s head hanging out the rolled down driver’s side window. What the hell was she doing out here? Heaving, I walked back over slowly. “Why in the hell are you running?” she asked with a slight chuckle. I blushed.
“Kind of thought I was going to die from how you were riding up my ass.” I explained. Chrissy let out a full-hearted laugh, rolling her eyes playfully.

“Yeah, I’m like Ted Bundy, huh?” My uneducated behind had no idea who she referenced to, and she caught on, mumbling “Never mind…” under her breath.

“Why are you following me, anyway? I thought you were at the bonfire.”

“I was, but when I looked up and saw you weren’t there anymore, I got worried. Asking stoned and drunken idiots where you were was like pulling teeth, but they finally uttered that you ran away from the bonfire. I decided to find and check up on you.” Wow, I guess I was wrong. At least one friend cared. I crossed my arms, looking down.

“I wasn’t liking the drinking and shit… I asked Jenna to take me home, but that led to Jack yelling at me and calling me a pussy. I left after that.”

“Yikes, I’m sorry, mate.” She frowned. Chrissy then fumbled with stuff in the passenger seat, throwing things behind her. “Here,” she patted down on her passenger seat, “hop in. We can take a friend, maybe see if Gino’s is still open to grab a slice and fries?” Her offer was pleasant, and it did titter my mind a little bit to take up on the offer instead of going to sleep. I nodded quickly. I hurried to the passenger side, slid inside, and buckled up. Chrissy smiled wide. “And we’re off!” I sat back as the surroundings around us started flying backwards. I watched it, almost mesmerized. Maybe this night won’t be as bad after all.
