Best Mistake

Nine

It was surprisingly slow at work for a Thursday night. I hadn't had a table in about an hour, so I made myself comfortable while I scrolled through my social media news feeds. I chuckled along with the guys when I overheard a joke they were making with each other. Although it was nice to relax, I couldn't help but wish we were busier. The bills weren't going to pay themselves.

"Whit, you're up," Kasey, the night's hostess said as she poked her head in the kitchen. "Table six."

I groaned as I stood from the chair, stretching my legs. Eric threw a french fry at me before I walked back into the dining room. I looked back at him, mocking a shocked expression. He pursed his lips in a kiss towards me and I responded by sticking my tongue at him.

"Yeah, just how I like it," he yelled.

I rolled my eyes, shaking my head as I tied my apron back around my waist. I grabbed a pen from behind the bar and froze when I started to my table. The site of Alex and Sophia sitting at it caught me off guard.

I started to turn around, planning on asking another waitress to cover my table. I stopped myself once I realized how weird that might seem. I took a deep breath, straightened my back, and trudged towards them.

This should be interesting.

"Hey guys," I smiled once I reached them. I could almost feel the breath leave Alex's lungs when he looked up at me. "My name is Whitney and I'll be your server tonight. Can I start y'all off with something to drink?"

Sophia turned to me, smiling politely. "Can I just get some water please?" Her Italian accent was thick.

I nodded. "Sure thing. Did you want lemon with it?"

"Yes, thank you," she nodded.

I turned to Alex, who looked at Sophia nervously. "Uh, Jack and Coke, please."

"Absolutely," I smiled, trying not to look at him for too long. "Did you want any appetizers while you wait?"

Alex and Sophia exchanged glances. "No, thank you though," she smiled.

I nodded. "Okay, I'll be right back with your drinks."

I hurried behind the bar and started mixing Alex's drink and grabbed the nozzle to fill Sophia's water. I grabbed her a slice of lemon and stuck it on the brim before going back to them.

"Here you go," I smiled, placing their drinks in front of them. "Are you guys ready to order or do you need a few more minutes."

"I have a question," Sophia chirped. I nodded for her to continue. "Is there any way I can get the veggie burger without the bun? I know I won't eat it and I would hate for you to have to waste it."

"Yeah, totally," I nodded.

She smiled, showing off her pearly whites. "I'll have that then. With steamed vegetables."

"Yes ma'am," I said, writing down her order. I turned to Alex. "And for you sir?"

He locked eyes with me for a second before looking back at the menu. "I'll have the Elvis burger. No pickles, please."

"Fries okay for your side?" I asked, glancing at him.

"Yes," he said.

"Ok great," I said, flashing them my I'm-sweet-please-tip-me smile. "I'll go put these in for you. Let me know if you need anything."

I picked up their menus and took them back to Kasey before hurrying to the computer in the back to put in their orders. Once I was done I started to go in the kitchen to make sure they received it when I felt myself being gently pushed down the hallway where the bathrooms were. I turned around to see Alex.

"You work here?" he whispered.

"Yes," I said slowly, tugging on my apron. "What gave it away?" I asked sarcastically.

Alex looked around the corner towards Sophia then back at me. "Well I wish I would've known that before I brought her here," he hissed.

He started running his hands through his hair nervously. I sighed and grabbed them, holding them down at his sides.

"Does she seem suspicious about anything?" I asked.

He thought for a second before shaking his head and shrugging.

"Okay then. Chill out. Just act normal."

He nodded, taking a deep breath before walking back to his table. I shook my head as I walked back in the kitchen.

"You guys get that?" I asked.

"Yeah," Garrett said, looking over the ticket. "No bun?"

"Supermodle," I said and sat back down in my chair.

A few minutes later, their food was ready. I grabbed the plates and walked carefully towards them.

"Here you go ma'am," I smiled, placing Sophia's plate in front of her. "And you sir," I said. I glanced down at his empty glass. "Need another JC?" I asked.

Alex blushed a little and nodded. "Yes please."

I quickly mixed him another drink and took it back to him. "Here you go. Everything ok so far?"

Sophia already cut off a slice of her tofu patty, chewing and nodding in satisfaction. Alex hadn't even touched his food yet, but he nodded too.

"Great, I'll be back in a bit to check on you guys."

I walked back to the bar where Phil was getting ready to do some small recovery. "Need help?" I sighed.

He shrugged, nodding his head toward the sink. "I could use some clean glasses."

I nodded, patting his back as I passed him and started collecting dish water.

I could clearly see Alex and Sophia enjoying their meal while I washed the drink glasses. I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as I watched them. I knew I had no business feeling that way though.

Sophia was really nice, nicer than I thought she'd be. I quietly shamed myself for believing the stereotype that supermodels were stuck up and rude. Although I probably wouldn't feel like the scum of the earth about carrying her boyfriend's baby if she were just a little bit of a bitch.

Her beauty was intimidating, too. She had flowing light brown hair, with light brown eyes to match. Her arms looked thin, but strong. She had legs that went on for days. The silver dress she wore clung to her body in all of the right places. No wonder Alex was so afraid of losing her. I dried off my hands and looked down at my black Whiskey's shirt, black skinny jeans that were starting to tear at the knees, and my old as hell converses. I looked so average compared to her.

I started sifting through bottles, seeing what Phil would need more of later. I picked up a bottle of Jameson and took the top off, screwing the nozzle on. I caught myself staring at Alex. He had on a grey button down shirt, dark blue skinny jeans, and a clean pair of Vans on his feet. He looked so handsome sitting across from beautiful Sophia. They looked perfect together.

I sighed when I saw they stopped eating and went back over to them, putting on my best smile. "How was everything?"

"Wonderful," Sophia gushed. "When Alex said he was taking me to a gourmet burger restaurant I had no idea what to expect. But this was absolutely delicious. Compliments to the chef," she smiled.

I couldn't help but smile genuinely at her. "Thanks so much. I'll pass it along. Can I take your plates from you?"

She nodded enthusiastically, putting her silverware wrapper on top. I took Alex's and his smile seemed sincere, too. I smiled back. "You guys save room for desert?" I asked.

"Oh no," Sophia giggled. "Any more food and I'll have a food baby," she said, patting her flat stomach.

I felt the blood drain from my face when Alex choked on the last sip of his drink. "I-I'll be right back with your check," I stuttered.

I tugged on the collar of my shirt, trying to creat some air flow to cool down my flaming cheeks. Her comment was innocent, but eerily ironic. I ripped off their receipts, almost running to put it back on their table.

By that time I'd gotten more guests, so I hurried to get their drink orders before swooping back by Alex and grabbing his book. I ran his card, got my other tables drinks put them on a tray.

"Thank you guys so much," I said quickly as I sat the book back on their table. "You guys have a great night and please come back to see us," I smiled, ignoring the burning stares from Alex.

I took the drinks to my other table and got their order for their appetizer. As I was walking back by, I passed Sophia and Alex as they headed out the door. I locked eyes with Alex and he winked before opening the door for her.

I picked up their book on my way to the back and punched in the other table's order. When I opened up Alex's book to cash out the tip, I gasped.

"Damn girl," Eric said from behind me, making me jump. I didn't know he was looking over my shoulder. "What do I have to do to get a $100 tip?" he asked, chewing on a toothpick.

I shook my head, looking back out into the dining room. "Get pregnant, I guess."
