Noughts and Crosses

Alex's POV

It was Friday.
I couldn't wait for the weekend as I had two parties I was going to.
They weren't going to stop me going to them either.
We only had one Cross left.
One left Tuesday.
The other pulled a knife out and got expelled.
So only white boy remained.
I knew his name
His name was Jack and he was the only person who I would ever call my friend.

He was sat on his own looking lost that he doesn't have any friends.
"Oi blanket lover." Someone shouted and threw something at him.
It landed on the table which made him jump.
"Leave the poor bastard alone." I said and everyone looked at me.
"Look he might say he's a fucking Cross but he's a Nought at heart." I said and got up and went over to him.
I turned round and looked at them.
"No I'm not a blanket lover. He's not even black for fuck sake." I growled and sat next to him.
"Hey Jack." I said quietly and he looked at me.
"What do you want dagger?" He spat.
"Oi, I have literally put myself in danger talking to you so at least treat me with some fucking respect." I snapped.
"What do you want a gold medal?" He said sarcastically.
I grabbed hold of his hair and rubbed his face in his food.
"If this how you treat a friend then we aren't friends anymore." I growled quietly in his ear and got up and went back to the table I came from.
I looked over to him and saw him glaring at me.
I stuck my middle finger up at him and looked down and rolled myself a cigarette and went outside for some air and so I could smoke.

I was lost in my little world listening to music and smoking when I saw two feet stood in front of me.
They weren't teachers shoes so I looked up and saw it was Jack.
I pulled my head phones out and got up.
"Alex I'm sorry about in there." He said quietly.
"Well I was trying to be a friend but since you threw it straight back in my face I don't see why I should bother anymore." I said.
"I know you was. Don't put your reputation on the line because of me." He said and looked down.
"They ain't my friends. I only had one and that's still how it is." I said quietly and looked at him.
He looked at me and smiled sadly at me.
"Same here Alex. Same here." He whispered.
"Look I'm not around this weekend but Sunday go to the beach and we'll have a good catch up on everything. Remember how to get in?" I asked.
"How could I forget." He smiled and went off.
"Jack.." I said and he stopped and looked at me.
"Keep on doing what your doing. They'll give up slowly, just don't back down." I said.
Jack smiled and went off.

The rest of the day was shit.
I didn't see Jack and I hoped nothing bad happened to him.
I bumped in Meggie.
"You going to that party later?" She asked.
"Yeah." I said and looked at her.
Something was up, more than normal.
"Meggie what's wrong?" I asked seriously.
She shook her head. "Nothing is wrong." She whispered.
"Yeah there is. You have tears in your eyes. You hardly cry Meg." I said quietly.
She looked away from me.
"Meggie tell me what's wrong." I said a little louder.
I may of been the youngest out of us but I was really protective over Meggie like she was too me.
"All I'm saying Alex is don't go to that party. Something bad is going to happen there." She said and walked off.
"Meggie!" I said loudly but she ignored me.

I went looking for Jack.
Sure enough so assholes where beating him up.
"Leave him alone." I growled and pulled them off him.
"Why?" They challenged.
"He may say he's a fucking Cross but he's the same as us, he's a Nought! Now unless you want your heads smashed in I suggest you leave." I said and walked up to them.
"Nigga lover." One said.
"What was that?" I challenged.
Everyone knew not to challenge me and not to get on the wrong side of me, especially if I was having a bad day which was deffently happening.
One turned round.
"Nigga lover." He said slowly.
I didn't notice Jack had got up and had him pinned up against the wall.
"Do you want me to bash your fucking dagger head against the fucking wall!" He said loudly.
They said nothing and Jack bashed his head hard against the wall.
"If you want me to stop you have to fucking speak dagger! Or is that too hard for you to do." He spat.
"Get your filthy body away from me and don't even breath on me." They snarled.
"What you going to do about it?" He snarled and spat in their face and let them go and stormed off somewhere.
I stood there shocked.
All I could say was he wasn't the little shy Jack I knew he knew how to stand up for himself and mean business about it as well.
I walked in the other direction like nothing had happened.

I was home alone since mother and dad had both buggered of somewhere. Meggie was somewhere but I didn't know where.
Which was odd as she always told me everything even her sex life which I didn't want to know but the last few days she's been really distance from me.
I made the most of being home alone and turn my music up really loud and went and had a shower and got ready for this party.
I heard the front door open and shut.
I went out my room and looked over the banisterr to see who it was.
"Meggie." I said and got her attention.
She looked up and I saw she had a black eye.
"Meggie come upstairs." I said and she nodded and slowly walked up the stairs.
She went to my room I turned the music down and sat on the bed with her joining me as well.

"Who did this Meg?" I asked quietly and looked at her face.
"No one. I was clumsy that's all." She whispered.
"We're close Meg so I know when your lying and your lying now. Tell me what's wrong?" I said.
"Don't get involved Alex. This is one thing you can't protect me against." She sniffed and walked out my room.
I sat there and thought about it for ages.
I got up pulled a hoodie on and shoes.
"I'm going out." I said to Megs door knowing she was on the other side.
I didn't get a response.
"Suit yourself." I muttered and went to the party.

It was safe to say I was drunk and so was all the other people here.
"Was it true that, that blanket lover beat up a year 10?" Someone asked.
"Yeah, he fucking bashed his head against the wall." I said and started smoking this joint which was going to finish me off.
I was slowly wondering round the house when I fell over a bag.
"The fuck?" I muttered to myself and looked inside it.
I was expecting clothes, school stuff not what actually in it.
"A bomb?" I questioned myself and went to look further into the bag
I felt someone grab my arm.
"Alex we have to go." Someone said loudly.
"Why's there a bomb?" I asked confused and looked at the person who was Meg.
"I'll explain later but we have to go!" She said and tried to pull me away but I was still to shocked to move.
"Alexander move it for fuck sake!" She said and gave me a really hard tug which got me away from it.
"Are you able to run?" She asked and looked me in the eye and panic was written all over her face.
I looked at her blankly.
"Your fucked aren't you?" She asked seriously.
I nodded.
"Don't tell mother or dad." I said quietly
"If you don't fucking move it we won't live that long now move!" She said and dragged me through the people and dragged me outside.
"Alex look at me." She said and grabbed my face.
"Look at me." She said quickly.
So I did.
"You need to go home. Don't answer the door. Don't ask questions. Just keep your head down and go straight home." She said quickly.
"What about you?" I asked.
"I'll be fine I promise. Now go home. Don't look back okay. I'll see you tomorrow when you wake up." She said and kissed my forehead and went of to the darkness.
I turned and looked at the house and slowly staggered home.

Not before the house blew up.
I dropped to the ground and covered my head.
I dunno how long I was on the floor for but I felt someone grab my arm.
"Get up Alex. We have to go now!" It wasn't Meg but it sounded like Jack.
”Whats happened?" I asked confused and sat up.
"I can't say but we have to go now before they find us." He said quickly and dragged me on my feet.
"Before who finds us?" I asked.
"It doesn't matter Alex just fucking move it." He said and grabbed hold of my arm and dragged me off into the darkness.
He took us to the beach at my house.

I snatched my arm out of his hold and turn round and looked at him hard.
"What the fuck was that all about? Why was there a fucking bomb in that house?" I asked quickly. "I can't say Alex. They have me sworn to secrecy." He said quietly.
"Who? Who does Jack?" I asked and walked , well staggered, up to him.
"I'm not saying Alex. Go indoors and forget about what has happened tonight. If you don't they'll be after you." He said as a warning and went back to the darkness.
I just stood there and thought about everything which has just happened.
I sighed and staggered of indoors.

I went indoors and mother and dad was home.
"Alexander!" Mother said and rushed over to me and pulled me into a hug, which I didn't return.
"Where was you?" Dad asked.
"Drinking and doing drugs." I said and turned around and walked up the stairs.
"Where's your sister?" Mother asked.
"How the fuck am I meant to know? She doesn't even speak to me anymore." I said sadly and walked into my room
I walked over to the bed and turned the TV on and put a good film on and watched it until I passed out.
