Hope for the helpless

We gamble with desire

"You'll never be alone if you have music." Jack said as he handed me my phone and scampered out of the door. I realised just how brilliant his music taste was. After scrolling through various songs by blink, FOB, panic! At the disco, green day and a couple that I hadn't heard of, I decided to listen to something positive. After about three and a half songs Jack walked back into the room with a guitar badly hidden behind his back. "What's that?" I said pausing the music and deciding to play along, "it's something to keep us occupied." He said with a smile. He pulled the acoustic guitar from behind him and I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. It was a light coloured wood with grain running through it, it had intricate pictures on it of wolves howling at the moon and there were little paw prints painted on the fret board. "So you like it?" Jack asked looking at my amazed expression "yeah, it the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen!" I said sounding slightly like an over excited three year old, he just chucked at my reaction. He sat down on the chair next to me and strummed a few notes to check that it was tuned, "what do you want me to play?" He asked politely, " Urm... I don't know. You pick." I said and he nodded. He played a few notes and I soon recognised the song as always by panic! At the disco. When I sang the first few words he looked up at me but continued to play. I watched him closely as he played while I sang along, letting the music consume us. As the song finished he looked up at me "I didn't know you could sing." He said "you err... Never really asked." I stuttered in return "it's okay," he chuckled "you sounded amazing!" I blushed at his complement, "thanks."

We played a few more songs until I said i was hungry, "do you want me to get you something from the cafeteria?" Jack asked "no the food here sucks, I'm in the mood for a burger."
"Okay then I'll be right back! Look after my guitar, that thing is my pride and joy." I couldn't help but giggle at what he said. "Is fine you can trust me." He walked out of the room and a sudden feeling of loneliness washed over me. I stroked the guitar that was next to me, tracing the outlines of the design, I plucked a string and sat for a moment enjoying the sound that it made. I sat up in the bed, crossed my legs and rested it on my thigh. I began to play a few chords and they soon began to form a song:

Lights out
I still hear the rain
These images that fill my head
Now keep my fingers from making mistakes
Tell my voice what it takes to
Speak up, speak up
and keep my conscience clean
When I wake

Don't make this easy
I want you to mean it
Jasey (say you mean it)
Your dressed to kill I'm calling you out
(Don't waste your time on me)

Now there's an aching in my back
A stabbing pain that says I lack
The common sense and confidence
to bring an end to promises
That I make in times of desperate convostion
Hoping my night could be better that this in the end
(Just say when)

Don't make this easy
I want you to mean it
Jasey (say you mean it)
Your dressed to kill I'm calling you out
(Don't waste your time on me)

I've never told a lie
And that makes me a liar
I've never made a bet
but we gamble with desire
I've never lit a match
with intend to start a fire
But recently the flames are getting out of control
Call me a name kill me with words
Forget about me it's what I deserve
I was your chance to get out of this town
But I ditched the car and left you to

Wait outside,
I hope the air will serve to remind you
that my heart is a cold
as the clouds of your breath
And my words are as timed as the beating in my chest

My head snapped up when I heard the sound of clapping from the door. Jack was standing with a paper bag under his elbow clapping and grinning, "that was brilliant, Lex." He said as he came and sat down next to me. We both enjoyed the burgers and fries, "I didn't know you wrote," Jack said between mouthfuls, "yeah, I've only written a couple of things but I do want to be a song writer." I explained, "forget writing the songs your good enough to be the one performing them!" He said causing me to blush at the compliment,"your cute when you blush." Jack said as he leaned over and kissed me. We only realised how late it was when the street lamps outside clicked on and a nurse walked in and closed the curtains. Jack got up and got ready for bed, "why can't you sleep with me?" I whined as he got into the spare bed. I could see that he was blushing even though he was trying to hide it, "because, i don't think that beds made for two." I pouted at him and he just laughed and said "tomorrow." I smiled at the thought of going home with Jack, taking one final look at his beautiful face before he turned the lights off. "G'night, sleep well." I heard him say from the other bed, "night." I answered as I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
