Undercover

I woke up and looked over next to me, seeing that the makeshift bed was empty. My stomach growled, I hadn't eaten for quite a few days. I crawled out of the makeshift bed and towards the fire. Jack cooking something, it appeared to be a rabbit but I may be mistaken. I sat down near him, trying to be as silent as possible.

"What do you want Alex," Jack said, sounding irritated.

"What crawled up your ass and died," I muttered.

"Sorry, I have to trust everything you say without question and trust the fact that I won't die. However, while I trust you with my very life you won't trust me with basic human needs. I'm a little frustrated with you, I'm sorry for that."

"Don't worry about me Jack, seriously. I've taken care of myself my entire life, I'm going to be fine."

"I just want to protect you Lex, I feel like I need to."

"Don't worry about me."

I got up and walked away from him. Why did he think that someone like me needed protection? I wasn't weak, I was a weapon, crafted to do the dirty work that needed to be done. I wasn't going to fall for it, I wasn't going to give in to him. I didn't need him to protect me, I had to protect him.

I sat down, pulling at my hair. I looked over and saw Jack coming and he handed me a piece of meat on a rock. He walked away with an almost visible black cloud over his head. He reminded me a lot of someone I had known.

Her name was Cati, the first person I fell for. I had to breakup with her because I got engaged to Rian. She looked a lot like Jack also. I could still see her long black hair, which was natural, and hung around her like a veil. In her fringe was a single blonde strand kind of in the middle of it. She was very willowy and she looked gorgeous. Her eyes were a beautiful gray that never shined with life. She was so sad all the time.

"Alex, what are you thinking about," Jack asked, sitting next to me.

"Cati," I said.

"Who is that?"

"A girl I had a thing with before I got engaged."

"You had a thing with someone?"

"I know that's hard to believe, that I could be with someone but it happened. She was as cold as I so it worked pretty well. Well, it couldn't work out now so it really doesn't matter."

"Why do you say that?"

"She's dead Jack."

"Oh, what'd she look like?"

"You."

I stood up, walking towards the creek. Why was I telling Jack this, why did I think he cared? Why did I even bring him with me? All I did was risk another life and bring another mouth to feed. It was the stupidest idea to bring him with me. To bring anyone with me. Why did I?

"Freeze," a voice yelled to me.

Who yelled at Alex? I said it would speed up. What do you think about this mysterious girl that Alex talked about? (Cati is pronounced Katie) Kind of strange isn't it?

So, I got my great grandmother's engagement ring back from the jeweler and I love it so much and I don't want to take it off and it reminds me of my grandma which makes me very happy.
