Chapter Six.

Jack

I had just woken up and taken a shower, I was now in the process of styling my hair. To say I was scared to tell Alex and Lisa about how I feel for Layla, would be a understatement. I was petrified. I mean, Layla is not just some other girl that I feel lust for, making me what to have sex with her. No, she’s different. Normally I would try and avoid relationships, but when it comes to her, I don’t think I can. I can’t wait till she is 18, I can’t kiss her anymore until then, I don’t want to get in more trouble than I already am. I feel like Alex is going to kill me, Layla is special, she will be his daughter soon. I know it sounds wrong, dating your best friends daughter, but I can’t help feel the way I feel for her. I feel like, she is the one. The one I have been waiting my whole life for, the one I have been trying to fill the empty void in my heart for by having sex with different girls every night. I know I sound crazy, but it’s true. Once I was done with the thoughts in my head I let out a sigh and grabbed my leather jacket as I walked out my front door, locking it behind me. I got in my car and looked in the mirror, checking my looks one last time before pulling out. I really hope this day would go as planned, but I don’t know, Alex can be unpredictable at times, Lisa can be as well. I started up my car and started my way to their house.

I pulled into their driveway about fifteen minutes later, since I was driving slower than normal, still really scared about telling them. I shut off my car and stepped out of my car. I put my keys in my jacket pocket and made my way to the front door. When I got to the front door, I just opened it up and walked right in, I’m here too much already so I don’t feel the need to knock. I walked into the living room, where I heard voices coming from. I saw Lisa and Alex sitting on their normal couch, and Layla sitting on the couch she is always on.

“Hey Jack!” Alex said with a huge smile.

“Hey man. Hey Lisa.” I said returning his smile, as I took a seat next to Layla. “Hello Layla.”

“Hey Jack.” She said smiling at me.

“What are you doing here so early, man?” Alex asked.

“You know, just wanted to hang out. I was bored at home.” I said with a small laugh, it wasn’t a totally lie, I really was bored at home. “Plus, it’s not that early, it’s 10am.”

“Normally you would still be asleep at this time if you didn’t have anything important to do, Jacky.” Lisa spoke.

“Well, I kinda do have something important to do…” I spoke, trailing off at the end.

“What’s that?” Alex asked, sounding confused. I looked over to Layla and she nodded her head.

“Well, uh...I-I d-don’t know how to say t-this...b-but uh…” I was stuttering really bad, I did not expect this to happen at all.

“Well go on, spit it out.” Lisa spoke, keeping the smile on her face.

“When you guys were at the store yesterday, I kissed Layla. I couldn’t get the kiss off my mind last night, I came over in the middle of the night and picked her up and we went on a drive to the lake. When we were there I basically confessed my feelings for her. We kissed again. We went to the store and had a little play fight in the toy aisle with fake swords, till a worker came and made us stop. I then brought her back here, and before she got out of the car, I kissed her a third time…” I spoke, avoiding all eye contact with everyone.

“Told you he would confess up sooner or later.” Alex spoke, with a chuckle. I looked up confused and say him looking at Lisa, who looked annoyed with him.

“I hate when you are right.” She muttered. I looked over to Layla and she looked just as confused as I did.

“Uhh..?” I said, trying to get them to elaborate.

“We saw you and Layla pull out last night, we will still awake. We all saw when you guys pulled back in. We saw the kiss.” Alex spoke.

“Y-you’re not m-mad?” I asked confused.

“I admit, I was pretty pissed off about it last night, like, so pissed off I was about to jump out my window and tackle you to the ground. But, I saw the smiles on both of your faces. I couldn’t do that.” He spoke.

“So you will let me be with her?” I asked, you could hear the hopefulness in my voice.

“No. Not yet at least.” Lisa spoke this time.

“Huh?” I asked, getting confused again.

“Lisa and I talked about it last night. We want you to agree on somethings before anything.” Alex spoke.

“Sure. Anything.” I spoke.

“First, you must wait till she turns 18 to do anything with her, that includes kissing. You may hold hands as much as you would like. Secondly, you must not have sex with any other girl during the two months you two are not together, that includes when you guys are together. Thirdly, you may be my best friend, but she will be my daughter very soon, so if you break her heart, I will not hesitate to kick your ass.” Alex spoke as he crossed his arms over his chest. “Agree?”

“Yes. I agree to everything you just said.” I spoke with a huge smile on my face.

“Oh, and no more keeping her out past midnight!” Lisa added. Making Layla giggle from beside me. I looked over at her, I looked in her eyes and saw this little sparkle.

“Gosh I want to kiss you so bad right now.” I spoke as I shook my head. I watched as the redness in her cheeks showed, and she blushed. I looked back over to Alex with puppy eyes. “Please just let me kiss her one last time?” I begged. Lisa chuckled and Alex sighed.

“Fine. Hurry up.” He spoke. I quickly turned around to face her and put my hand on her cheek to make her face me, then pressed my lips to her’s. I gave her the most passionate kiss I could, I have to give her something special if I couldn’t kiss her for another two months. I felt Layla smile into the kiss, making me smile as well. “Okay! No more!” Alex spoke up. I pulled away from the kiss and looked into her eyes.

“You’re so cute.” I spoke with a small chuckle. Making her giggle.

“Never in my life did I ever think I would see the day that Jack Barakat was so head over heels for a girl.” Lisa spoke with a laugh.

“He’s not head over heels.” Alex spoke looking at Lisa.

“That’s where you're wrong Gaskarth, yes he is.” Lisa spoke back.

“I think she might be right this time, dude.” I spoke, laughing a bit.

“Well holy shit. My best friend is in love with my daughter.” He spoke.

“I wouldn’t call it love just yet.” Layla spoke up. I nodded in agreement. We both watched as Alex and Lisa both nodded in understanding.

“Well, still, it’s a pretty big deal, my best fucking friend has feelings for someone! My daughter! I think we should go out and celebrate.” He spoke with a huge smile.

“Yeah! you boys can go out to a bar or something, I need to help Layla get set up for her first day at school tomorrow!” Lisa spoke, matching Alex’s smile.

“Ugh.” Layla groaned.

“Oh come on, Dulaney High is not that bad.” I said as I laid down, putting my head on Layla’s lap, as I also took her hand in mine. Alex never said anything about me putting my head on her lap, plus he said I could hold her hand as much as I wanted to. She smiled down at me.

“I’m sure it’s not bad. I just never fit in at school, or anywhere for that matter of fact.” She spoke.

“Layla, you are a beautiful, intelligent, and charismatic girl. Everyone will love you, I promise. If there is any problems, just tell us and we will take care of it.” I spoke as I placed my other hand on her cheek.

“The feelings are strong with this one.” Alex whispered to Lisa.

“You know I can still hear you right, asshole?” I asked as I turned my head to look at him.

“Fuck.” Alex spoke under his breathe. Making Lisa laugh at him.

“Come on Layla! Let’s leave the boys to go do their thing at the bar! Let’s go get you ready for tomorrow.” Lisa spoke as she stood up, she loved helping other people, no matter their age. “Well Jack, get off the poor girl so she can move.” I let out a huge sigh and sat up, then stood up off the couch. I held my hand out to Layla to help her up, which she gladly took. She tried to walk away from me when she got up, but I kept ahold of her hand.

“I need to go with Lisa, Jack.” She giggled at the end. I pulled her back to me and threw my arms around her.

“Not before I get a hug good-bye.” I spoke with a smile. She returned the hug and we both let go at the same time. I watched as she walked away from Alex and I, walking down the hall with Lisa. “Gosh she’s beautiful.” I spoke, not really speaking to anyone.

“Well, she is my daughter.” Alex spoke. I looked over to him and he had a smirk on his face.

“Oh shut up! Let’s go.” I said laughing. He laughed as well, and we both walked to the door and out. “Who’s car shall we take?”

“Yours. Since you are blocking me in.” He spoke. I nodded my head in agreement and we both walked over to my car. “I’m driving, I don’t care if you feel like you will be in danger.”

“Fine. But if we crash, the blame is all on you.” He spoke as he opened the front passenger side door and got in.

“Deal.” I said as I got in the car and started it up and we started our trip to the closest bar. “Should we call Rian and Zack?”

“Nah, we need some bro time.” He spoke with a smile I nodded my head and continued to drive down the road. We made our way to a small club that was open 24/7. I parked the car and we both got out. We walked to the door and walked in, going straight to the bar area.

“Hey boys. What can I get for ya?” The girl manning the bar asked.

“One Stella.” Alex spoke.

“Sure thing. How about you?” She asked turning to me.

“Uh, how about a Bass Ale?” I spoke.

“Coming right up, boys.” She said with a smile as she walked away to get our beers.

“So, these feelings for my daughter, aye?” Alex asked turning to me, with a smirk on his face.

“She is not your daughter. Even when you guys do adopt her, she still won’t be your real daughter.” I spoke as I turned to him.

“But Lisa and I will still treat her as a real daughter.”

“I know.”

“You better be good to her, Barakat.”

“You don’t have to worry about a thing, Lex. I’ll be good to her, I promise.” I spoke with a smile, as the woman brought over our beers.

“Enjoy.” She said as she placed them down in front of us and left to go and take orders from other people. Alex only had one more beer after his first, that way he could drive us back to his place. Me, on the other hand, had about two more beers, and to I was drunk, wouldn’t really be true, I only had a small buzz.

“Hey cutie.” Some blonde girl dressed in a tight as fuck shirt, and mini-skirt said to me as she came up next to me and put her hand on my arm, rubbing it.

“Hi.” I said, trying to be nice.

“How about me and you go back to my place. We can have some fun.” She spoke, trying to act sexy as she kept biting her lip.

“Thank you for the offer. But I will happily decline.” I spoke with a smile, continuing the nice act, I just really wanted her to remove her hand from my arm, even if she was hot as hell.

“Aw, why not baby?” She asked, doing a little pout face.

“Because I’m seeing someone.” I spoke, it’s not really a lie, but it’s not really the truth. Layla and I are kinda in the middle of things right now, for two more months that is.

“What she don’t know won’t hurt her.” She said, biting her lip again. I shrugged her hand off my shoulder and gave her a look.

“I said no. Now go find someone else to fuck, I will not do it.” I spoke, getting defencive, over nothing really.

“Fine, asshole.” She muttered as she walked away.

“Yeah, keep calling me a asshole, slut.” I spoke as she continued to walk. I looked beside me and saw Alex had a huge smile on his face.

“What?” I asked confused.

“You just turned down that girl, who is totally your type. You really do like Layla don’t you?” He asked, keeping the smile on his face. I nodded my head.

“I do. I really do.” I spoke with a small chuckle.

“Come on man, let’s go pick up the us and the girls up some dinner and get back to my place.” He spoke as he stood up. I followed his actions and stood up as well, we both paid for our beers and took our leave. “Keys?” I took my keys out of my jacket pocket and placed them in his hand. We both got to my car and Alex started it up, as started out drive.

“So, what do you think they would want to eat?” He asked.

“Layla likes Chinese food.” I spoke. I remember her telling me that as we did our little play fight with those fake swords at Wal-Mart.

“Chinese food it is then.” Alex spoke with a smile. We drove to the closest Chinese drive-through and ordered the food. “What does she like?”

“Anything that doesn’t have meat.” I spoke, remembering that she is vegetarian. He nodded his head and continued to order the food. Once he was done ordering the food, we pulled up to the window and he paid for everything. “I could have paid for mine and Layla’s.” I spoke, as he handed me the food to hold, as he drove off.

“You could have paid for yours, yes, but I can pay for my own daughter. And no, the food was on me tonight.” He said with a smile as he pulled out onto the road and drove. I put the bags of food on the floor, in front of me. I turned on my stereo and on came Green Day, since I still had in the Dookie album in, since when Layla put it a couple days ago. Alex and I both sung along to the songs as he drove. We pulled up into his driveway about thirty minutes later. He handed me my keys and we both got out, I carried the bags of food and he opened the doors and everything for me. We walked into the living room, where we saw Layla and Lisa watching a movie.

“We got food!” I spoke as I held up the bags.

“Ooo! I love food!” Lisa said with a huge smile.

“I think everyone does, babe.” Alex said as he returned her smile and gave her a hello kiss, something I wish I could do to Layla.

“True. Now give me my food!” Lisa said making grabby-hands at the bags in my hands. I laughed and placed the bags on the table in the middle of the room. I walked over to the couch where Layla was laying down.

“I could lay on top of you.” I spoke with a smirk, since she was taking up the whole couch.

“Oh. Hi. Didn’t see you there.” She said with a laugh as she sat up.

“Sure you didn’t.” I laughed.

“I’m being honest, like, I didn’t even hear you guys come in, I was texting Kaitlin.” She spoke with a smile. “And nothing comes in my way of my best friend.”

“I will want to meet this best friend of yours one day.” Alex spoke.

“And how is that going to happen? She lives in Cali, and we live. Well, here.” Layla spoke looking over to him.

“Well, when we have a concert in Cali one day, I’ll bring you along, and we can pick her up and take her to the concert with us.” Alex spoke with a smile.

“I can tell right now, that you are going to be a great Dad.” Layla said with a huge smile and laugh.

“He will be, I’m sure of it.” Lisa spoke as she grabbed her’s and Alex’s food and walked back over to their couch. I got up off the couch and grabbed mine and Layla’s food.

“Here you go beautiful.” I spoke as I handed her’s to her.

“Well thank you.” She said with a huge smile as she took it.

“No problem at all.” I said, matching her smile as I sat back down next to her and she moved so she was leaning into my side. We started eating, and then we heard Layla’s phone start ringing.

“Shit. Sorry.” Layla muttered as she took the phone out of her pocket and answered it. “Hello?” Pause. “Wait, Kaitlin. Calm down. Why are you crying?” She spoke as she put her food on the table and walked out of the room.

“Damn, hope Kaitlin’s okay.” Lisa spoke with a frown.

“Same. She seems like a really nice girl.” Alex agreed. I nodded my head, agreeing as well.

“What?!” I heard Layla yell. I quickly put my food on the table and ran into the kitchen where Layla went. When I got there, I saw she was sat on the ground, tears coming out of her eyes. I quickly ran over to her and sat next to her, bringing her onto my lap. Not long after I sat down, in rushed Alex and Lisa.

“Shh….calm down sweetheart...it’s okay.” I spoke, trying to calm her. I saw her phone was on the ground. “Alex, get her phone, see if Kaitlin’s still on it. Find out what’s going on.” I spoke as I pointed to Layla’s phone. Alex nodded his head and walked over to pick up Layla’s phone. He put the phone to his ear and started talking.

“Kaitlin? Hey, it’s Alex. What’s going on?” Pause. “Oh my gosh.” Pause. “I am so sorry, Kaitlin.” Pause. “Okay, take care of yourself. Don’t worry, we'll figure something out.” Pause. “Okay. Bye.” I watched as he hung up his phone and looked at it with wide eyes.

“What’s going on, Lex?” Lisa asked.

“Kaitlin’s parents were in a car crash. They died on impact. Kaitlin said that they treated Layla like she was part of the family.” Alex spoke softly. I felt Layla’s grip tighten around my neck as Alex explained. I held onto her tighter and cooed little nothings into her ear to calm her down. If took a few minutes to really get her to calm down, but it finally worked. She pulled out of my embrace and had the saddest look I have ever seen on her face, it broke my heart.

“W-what is she g-going to do? Her parents w-were all she had in her f-family. Her grandparents already p-pasted away. She d-don’t have any aunt’s or uncles.” She spoke quietly. To be honest, I didn’t have a question to give her. I didn’t know what could make if all better. I looked up to Alex and Lisa and they were both whispering to each other. They stopped whispering and looked over to us.

“Layla, can you tell us how old Kaitlin is?” Lisa asked.

“She’s 16.” Layla spoke softly, as she moved so she was cuddled into my side.

“Would you want a sister?” Alex asked. I knew where this was going. Layla looked up with wide-eyes.

“R-really?” She stuttered out. Lisa and Alex both nodded their heads with small smiles. Layla jumped up and ran over to them giving them both big hugs.

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!” She repeated over and over again. Alex chuckled as him and Lisa both hugged her back.

“Now here, take your phone and call her back. She what she thinks about the idea.” Alex said letting go of Layla and holding out her phone. She took her phone with a huge smile on her face and walked back into the living room.

“You guys really think you can handle two teenage girls?” I asked as I stood up and walked over to them.

“Sure we can!” Lisa said with a huge smile, Alex nodding in agreement. “Plus, it seems like you can take pretty good care of one of them at least.” She spoke with a smirk.

“Hey, the guy can’t help it if he’s got feelings for her.” Alex defended me.

“Yeah! What he said!” I spoke.

“Whatever. Come on losers, let’s go finished eating.” Lisa said as we both followed her back into the living room to finish eating.
