What An "All Time Low" Really Means

Chapter 3

My first band practice with "Future Hearts" was coming up in about a half an hour. That's when it happened. Another breakdown. I just thought about what I was doing with my life and realized that I was a mediocre student, a decent guitarist, and had no plans for the path ahead of me.
"I'm worthless," I thought to myself, "A pathetic waste of space and oxygen."
I didn't even think, I just pulled out the switchblade that I kept under my pillow, in case of burglers. I held it up to my left wrist, covered in scar after scar. Then the doorbell rang. Ding, ding, ding, diiiing! Ding, ding, ding, diiiing! I set down the blade and walked to the door. It was Alex.
As soon as I opened the door he said, "Hey, I came to make sure you made it to practice, it starts in 15 minutes."
"Okay, I'll be right there," I said.
I closed the door and ran to my room. I tucked away my switchblade and grabbed my guitar case. I was still thinking about depression when I came up with a little tune.
*"Stop fucking around with my emotions.
I like you better when you're numb.
I'm sick and tired of false devotion.
Devote yourself to self devotion.
Or suck it up and let it go.
'Cause you're always out to get me.
You're the snake hidden in my daffodils,
When I'm pickin' flowers.
That's just my luck these days.
Why can't you just be happy for me?
You're the brake lights failing as I swerve,
Off the freeway.
It kind of feels like sabotage.
Why can't you just be happy for me?"
It seemed to just fit perfectly and just came to me. I grabbed my guitar case and ran to the door, Alex still waiting there. We hustled over and began practice. I told the band about the lyrics I came up with.
"Wow dude," Zack started, "That's amazing. Are you sure you're not a vocalist?"
"Positive, I can't sing for crap, sometimes I just think of random lyrics," I said as I pulled out my guitar.
I strummed a couple chords, found some that sounded good then wrote down the lyrics I thought of.
I gave them to Alex, "Can you sing this? I'm going to play guitar and just follow the beat."
"Sure," Alex responded.
We did it and when we were finished Rian commented, "Bro, how can you come up with all of this stuff on the fly? It's frickin' amazing!"
I glanced down, blushing. We spent the rest of practice figuring out the rest of the lyrics and having a bunch of fun, cracking jokes and taking snack and soda breaks. By the time we finished it had been nearly four and a half hours!
"Sorry guys," I said, "Gotta run!"
In sync, they all said, "See ya!"
With that, I jogged home, my guitar in one hand, and in my mind was the thought of belonging and happiness. The largest dose of this that I had had in a long time.
