Coffee Shop Soundtrack

Can We Create Something Beautiful, And Destroy It?

"Jackyyyy," I whined, crouching in front of the refridgerator.

"Whaaaat?" he called back in a similar tone.

"There's no food in this apartment!" I sighed, closing the refridgerator door and hoisting myself up to a sitting position on the granite countertop. Glancing up at the clock on the wall, I noticed that it was already 10 pm. That's not too late to go out and buy food, right? "I'm going shopping," I declared, slipping my shoes on and grabbing my keys.

"Isn't it a little late for that?" Jack asked, standing up to meet me at the door. I shook my head in reply, stepping outside and noting that the temperature was perfect for a walk down Thames Street.

"I might even walk," I decided out loud, causing desperate pleads of protest from Jack.

"Can't you just go in the morning? Lex, it's dangerous to be outside this time of night. We don't live in the suburbs anymore, there's people outside at night that want to hurt other people."

"Jack, baby, I'll be perfectly fine. I know how to protect myself." I defended.

"Last time I left you on your own in a dangerous situation, you woke up not knowing who I was..." Jack said quietly, studying the ground. I sighed.

"Seriously, Jack, let's not bring that up. I'm a big boy, we're not in high school anymore! I've grown up, and you've grown up. I think that if I want to take a short walk to the Walmart down the street, I can do that on my own! Nobody's going to pull me aside and beat me up! We're not sixteen, we're twenty-one. Goddamn, Jack, just have some trust in me. I'll be okay."

And with that, I slammed my apartment door and headed off down the street.
(Jack's POV)

"Goddamn, Jack, just have some trust in me. I'll be okay." Those two sentences would not stop running through my mind as I slumped down on the couch and stared through the window at the cars passing by on the street. I must have stayed in that position for about an hour, just wondering where each person was going, what they were doing. Were they worried about someone in their lives too?

My thoughts were cut short by the sounds of my cell phone ringing from my back pocket. A wave of both fear and relief washed over me when the caller ID read "Alexander <3".

"Hello?"

"Hello, is this Jack?" an unfamiliar voice asked me.

"Yes, and you are...?" I asked, hearing unintelligable noises in the background.

"My name is not important. What is important is that I am calling to inform you that I am with your little faggot of a boyfriend here, and we just wanted to call you for his......last words, of sorts." My breath caught in my throat.

"Let me talk to him!" I heard Alex yell in the background. His voice sounded strained, like he was being choked or strangled by the man who was calling.

"Not now, pet, I need to have a nice chat with your little...what did you call him again? Your 'Jacky?' Right. Just go sit over there like a good boy and- yes. Just stay right there or I'll-" there was a long pause on the other line after hearing the man talk to Alex.

"Now that that's settled," he said upon his return to the phone. "As soon as this conversation is over, this phone is being smashed, so any hopes of you finding our location will be hopeless. I just wanted you to know that you'll never be seeing the worthless faggot again, and that, if the two of you are cooperative, I might even let you have your final words together."

"You're a monster," I spat. "What do you want with him anyway?" I asked, trying to stay somewhat civil and not yell at this man; better to not make him angry.

"I got bored with the last slut that I kept here, so I decided to find a new one. Didn't you at least try to warn him about the dangers of walking on the street alone at night in the open?"

"He wouldn't listen to me!" I cried, pacing the living room now. How could this even be happening?

"Well, isn't that a shame. The little punk wouldn't listen to his boyfriend. You have two minutes to bid your last goodbyes, and don't expect to talk to him ever again."

"J-jack?" I heard Alex's choked out sob a moment later.

"Alex! Alex oh my god please tell me you'll be okay! You need to tell me where you are, baby, I need to find you before it's too late. What did he do to you?"

Alex explained for the next two minutes that he was bound and dragged into a dark ally somewhere between the apartment and the Walmart that isn't very far down the street. He thinks that he was near a Rite-Aid when this happened. I was about to reassure him that I was going to come rescue him when I heard a blood-curdling scream come from the other line.

"ALEX?" I cried, but there was no response. I heard the phone fall to the ground along with muffled crying.

"P-please, don't t-touch me there..." were the last quiet words I heard from my boyfriend before the call was disconnected.
