Who likes simple

She got it wrong.

*August 8, 2013*
*Thursday*

I close my eyes and listen to her speak,
“He got debts further from the ones he already had. He couldn’t afford to live or hardly ever see me. He hid it all from me. He helped pay for all my classes online. He would buy me that new album that was coming out,” She pauses her voice sounds heavy and thick like she’s about to cry. I stand up and reach over to her and for once, I don’t know what to do.
“He, well he decided he was worth more dead.” She reaches up and wipes her cheek but keeps her posture trying as hard as she can to maintain her dignity, obviously fighting for it.
“You blame yourself don’t you?” I speak and watch her reaction. Her shoulders crunch in like I just hit her with a heavy weapon once I say the words, all she manages is a weak nod. I’ve been speaking to this girl for over three months. I’ve found myself more and more worried about her. I think about the scars I saw on her ankles the first day I saw her.
I should have said something about it and offered her emotional support. I tried to give it to her over the past couple months and gotten closer to her. I know I can trust her. She reminds me of me in High School. Loud, but awkward, she would talk about how people would judge her by her outside shouting. The shield she puts up around herself to stop anyone from the vulnerable little girl under.
The girl who I had just learned missed her Dad, the girl who just wanted a connection to her distant mother. She was finally showing me that little vulnerable girl and all I want to do is hold her close to me just to stop her tears from coming. She’s like the little sister I never knew I wanted.
“Come here.” I manage and hold my arms out to her, she steps into them and wraps her arms around my waist, I try to look down at her face but she has her face tucked away into my collar making me unable to look down, let alone look at her.
“Nothing is your fault Hanna. Your dad made his decisions. They made you who you are today and probably brought us together. You need to let the grief of loosing your father behind you and celebrate his living.” I rub circles in his back and lean my head down to rest my cheek on the top of her head. I can feel her nod under me, but I know she’s just trying to shut me up.
I’ve heard story’s like this over and over and over on a daily basis because of my job, because my fans reach out to us. But I guess it just hurts a little bit more when it’s someone who you are close to.
“Come on.” She pulls away and wipes her cheek “Lets eat.” I let go of her hesitantly, her cheeks have become flushed and her eyes have rings around them. I nod,
“Okay.” I stand still as I watch her grab her plate and walk over to sit in front of the windows looking out over Baltimore. I take my plate and sit to her left. We sit in silence eating and watching the city until she speaks,
“Jack, why did you guys choose me? A high school student that hasn’t even graduated and doesn’t have a whole lot of experience.” She looks at me and a list of reasons run through my mind; one: Matt’s obvious mini crush on her. How we all wanted to get her out of that house before something terrible happened. Get her away from the bullying. Her passion for music. Her ability to play guitar, though it may be minimal it was a requirement.
“We liked you.” I answer her simply and look at her with a smile. “Come on, we have to get ready. Matt is having a meeting with everybody and Rian is hosting.” I get up and walk over to my bedroom, I pull on a grey T-shirt and black skinny jeans. By the time I finish getting ready Hanna sits on the couch in a BONER shirt, grey skinny jeans and a huge grin on her face.
“I like your shirt.” I chuckle at her expression.
“Come on, let’s go.” She stands up and starts to the door.
“Eager to get going aren’t we?” I laugh and start to follow her out the door.
“I just don’t want to spend another minute here.” She giggles and glances back at me.
“Ha. Ha. Song lyric I get it.” She just grins and starts to the elevator. “You got it wrong!” I call to her, her simple response is to flip me off.
