We'll Let The Fires Just Bathe Us

Through Misplaced Words And A Sinking Feeling

I raised the fork to my mouth and mid swallow a thought occurred to me causing me to nearly choke.

Jack and I had just had sex.

And he didn’t make me call him Sir.

I swallowed hard, looking up at him who was reading something in the paper and something told me that it had meant as much to him as it had to me. I couldn’t help but smile so I bit my lip to hide it.

“So what was that little outburst you had yesterday?” I asked, stabbing at a small piece of egg with my fork and setting those warm thoughts aside for the moment.
“Outburst?”
“When you threw your phone…And lodged it three feet into the wall.”
“Oh that. We got word of a demon who knew a strengthening spell we could use on Hell to buy us time and we’d payed him a bit in advance but he tried to walk off with the money.”
“Why else did we come?” I asked.
“We’re going to see a demon named Claire. She was alive around the time Lucifer fell from command and it’s rumored that she knows how to keep Hell from collapsing.” He replied.
“Oh.” I hummed.
“Don’t worry, tomorrow is all about you okay? Whatever you want to do.” He reminded.
“Okay.” I smiled.

We took a somewhat innocent shower and hopped in a cab, me singing along to the radio. Since I became Jack’s slave, he’s introduced me to a lot of different bands. Most of them were made up of humans before the demons came, Jack always said, “I’ve got to hand it to you, you humans have some good music.”

I usually never bothered to correct him when he referred to me as human because even though technically I’m an angel, I’ve spent my whole life being treated and thinking I was a human so a part of me still identifies myself as such.

Before too long, we pulled up to a big white house. Jack lead me up to the door and he rang the doorbell. The sound of hurried scrambling was heard from inside and the door was opened by a shirtless boy with hunched shoulders and wide eyes.

“We’re here for Claire.” Jack informed.

The boy nodded and took off. Jack and I stepped in and before too long, a woman appeared, the boy trailing along behind her. She pale skin, wavy blond hair that almost came down to her waist, she had light green eyes surrounded by dark eye makeup, and she was tall, maybe about 5’ 9”. She wore black skinny jeans and a shirt as well as a black leather jacket. Everything about her screamed “Don’t fuck with me.”

“Hello Claire.” Jack greeted
“Hello, Jack.” She replied, her voice leaking with poison and after being in the same room as her for about three seconds, I understood why the boy acted the way he did.
“How’s business?”
“Let’s skip the small talk and get straight to the point. You want to know how to fix Hell.” She said.
“I was told you could help with that.” Jack replied.
“You were told wrong. I can’t help.” She retaliated.
“But you know someone who can.” Jack pressed.

Her eyes flashed and a smile formed on her lips which made me uneasy.

“You have to understand nothing is certain. I’ve heard whispers, Jack.”
“We’ve gone on less.” I mumbled.
Her eyes darted to me.
“Who’s this you’ve brought to play?” She asked, taking a step forward.
“He’s not for you.” Jack stated firmly.

She glanced up at him and huffed.

“Shame, by the looks of him, we’d have so much fun.” She smiled, raking her eyes up and down my body.

I took the hem of Jack’s jacket in hand and stood close to him.

“Damion, go get me a pen and paper.” She ordered, not taking her eyes off me.

The boy from before, who’s name was apparently Damion, scurried off and returned within ten seconds.

“Talk to this man,” She said as she wrote down a name, “He might be able to help further.”
“Why are you doing this for free?” Jack asked.
“You and I both know this isn’t free, and also because Hell staying up is in everyone’s best interest. You understand why I can’t have new crazed demons running amok.” She said.
“Thank you Claire, I won’t forget this.”
“Oh I’m sure you won’t.” She replied before we exited.
“What did she mean, “This isn’t free?”?” I asked after we’d gotten into the cab.
“Claire has a…business.” Jack hesitated.
“Doing what?” I asked, my tone growing wary.
“Um…Remember how I told you that the second I bought you, I signed you death sentence? Well she’s your executioner. She sort of collects all the slaves that have had influential owners and sells them. Anyway, her payment for her information is one of my slaves so that she can sell it.”
“No! You can’t! You know whoever it is will be ripped to shreds.”
“Alex I don’t have a choice. Believe me I’m not crazy about the idea but-“
“But nothing. You can’t.”
“Alex. If I don’t pay her, she’ll rain Hell down over us.”
“So what? You’re the king of it!” I cried.
“Alex just!” He cried before he sighed and fell silent.
“What. Tell me?”
“The only way a demon can feel Hell’s anguish after they’ve turned is if a ruler sends them. Well I sent her and I didn’t bring her back for a long time. By the time I finally let her back, she’d changed. Her mind built defenses. This happens sometimes, it’s not common but it’s not unheard of. Anyway, now she’s ‘immune’ to Hell. I can’t control her with the fear of it like everybody else.”
“If you sent her to Hell, then why is she helping us?” I asked.
“Because like she said, Hell staying up is in everyone’s best interest. Also, I’ve done a few favors for her over the years.”
“Favors?”
“I may have been her supplier for a few decades.” He mumbled.
“Of what?”
“Slaves….and other things.” He mumbled the last bit.
“Great.” I sighed, leaning my head back against the headrest.
“That was a long time ago, Alex.” He said with a hit of a smile
“Whatever.” I mumbled.
“Aw is Lex jealous?” He laughed.
“No.” I contradicted but the way my voice raised sold me out.

Jack laughed and put his hand on the back of my head to guide me closer before his kissed my forehead.

“Don’t worry Lexy, I’m all yours.”

I couldn’t fight the smile that fell across my lips. I sighed and rested my head on his shoulder, bringing my arm over his body and cuddling up to him in the back seat.

“You’d better be.” I mumbled.

The cab pulled over to a nice restaurant and we got out, Jack’s demeanor changing from gentle to dangerous in a split second.

He told me about this guy, Mitchell. He had such a vast network of people and connections that he was nearly untouchable. Unfortunately for him, Jack had and even vaster network of people and connections. So when he tried to rip Jack off, he knew about it immediately.

Jack also mentioned a few things about him that really pissed me off, like the fact that Mitchell was one of the people in charge of one of the biggest slave syndicates ever, not only that, but it wasn’t just your normal run-of-the-mill slave trade. No. They sold children. Selling people is bad enough, but they sold kids to whatever sick pedophile wanted them.

I didn’t envy the man we were about to see because if Jack didn’t kick his ass, I would.

Jack ripped the door off and strode in. A bouncer stepped forward in response to the violence but the second he realized who Jack was, he looked down and backed off. Jack glared at him and scanned the crowd in the bar who were all staring at him. A small shuffle was heard, so quiet I almost didn’t hear it, but Jack’s advanced hearing defiantly picked it up and his head whipped around.

“Oh come on Mitchell, you were willing to express your stand point over the phone, don’t hide from me now that I’ve travelled all this way just to see you.” He said.

The bar was silent and a man with black hair and green eyes stepped out.

“Now tell me. Is there really a spell? Or were you just lying to my employees?”
“N-no there is.” He cried.

Even I knew he was lying so there was no way Jack missed it.

“Let me ask a question. Could-could I ask a question?” He inquired in an incredibly condescending tone.
“How stupid do you have to be to lie to the king of Hell?” He asked.

Mitchell started to tremble slightly, looking over the the door as if he was expecting someone.

“Alex, can you tell me?”
“Oh no you’re not dragging me into this.” I shook my head.

Jack laughed and the people in the bar chuckled too. I suppose it was amusing to them to see a slave talk back to their owner like that.

“Oh really? I’m not?” He asked, glancing to me.
“No.” I said to him before looking at Mitchell, who was still looking at the door, “Granted it was really really fucking stupid for you to lie to this guy,” I jerked my thumb at Jack before facing him, “That’s still not an excuse for you to have a temper tantrum.”

Jack laughed again.

“Babe you’ve seen me with a temper, this isn’t it.” He winked.

Mitchell glanced at the door again, looking more and more panicked. I shrugged, stepping forward, still behind Jack by a couple feet.

“Anyway getting back on track, now we have a situation. You see, I can’t just let you go because then I’d have everyone walking all over me.” Jack reasoned.

He eyed the door once more before speaking.

“P-please. An-anything. Just n-not the F-Four-Fourth Q-quarter.” Mitchel stuttered, his green eyes glued to Jack in fear.
“Oh Mitchel, I’m not going to send you there.” Jack mused, smiling and Michel relaxed slightly.

Then Jack reached forward and grabbed his shirt collar, yanking him forward and close to his face so that his ebony eyes were all Michel could see.

“But you aren’t getting out of this.” He snarled before Rian walked in and grabbed Michel, dragging him out as he screamed hollow promises about finding a spell and returning the money.

Once Michel couldn’t be heard anymore, Jack told the restaurant staff to charge all the customer’s bills, as well as the broken door, to him.

He said that to burst down a door and ruin someone’s lunch without paying for it was just rude.
I found it rather amusing that the king of Hell used that kind of logic.
