It was maddening being in there, there was absolutely nothing to look at accept the door. I hadn’t noticed how empty this place is before. No wonder everyone in here is so crazy, the room probably encourages it.
What must’ve been hours past. If you ask me, I’d say it had to have been at least five and by that point, I needed sound because not only was it blank, but it was silent. I closed my eyes, forming a mental picture of something for me too look at as I sang,

I sighed and tilted my head back against the door. It had probably been another hour and I was dying to get out of this room but I knew that Jack had the keys and when he let me out, it would be followed with a beating so I was sort of stuck.

“Lex.” Jack’s voice filled the room.

He didn’t sound as angry as I’d expected.

“Yo.” I replied and he opened the door.
“Come on.” He said as he jerked his head.

I breathed and got up, expecting him to throw me on the ground the second I stepped out…But he didn’t. He lead me up and into the living room.

“What was that about?” Jack asked, crossing his arms.
“Wait…So you’re not going to hit me?” I asked.
“Depends on your answer.” He replied.

I looked at him skeptically, wondering if I should tell him the truth. I figured that since the moment was over and everyone had left, it was okay.

“That guy was trying to hurt Eliza.” I mumbled.
“What does she matter to you?” He asked.
“She’s a sister to me.” I said.

Jack shook his head,

“Alex, why do you have a death wish?”
“I don’t. I just hold other’s lives above mine.” I answered, looking down.

Jack stood in front of me and stroked my cheek. I flinched just because I was expecting something a lot more rough.

“Don’t do that Lex. I might not always be here to save you.” He murmured.
“What could possibly pull you away from me?” I asked.
“Hell.” He replied.
“You’re the king of it Jack. You’re fine.”
“If Hell collapses, we don’t know what would happen. We don’t know if everyone in hell will escape, or everyone will get sucked back into it, or only the rulers will be sent back. Truth is we have no idea and If I’m gone, you’re unprotected and they will come for you Lex. And if that happens, you can’t be worried about saving everyone else, you need to focus on keeping yourself safe.”
“If something happens I will do everything in my damn power to help every slave I come across, you know that.” I replied making him glare.
“Save yourself.”
“Only when I know that everyone else is okay.”
“Damn it, Lex” He whispered.
“Jack I’m not saying I’ll throw myself right into the line of fire!” I cried.
“Really? Cause that’s what you did tonight!” He exclaimed, raising his voice and stepping forward.
“That was different. I had no choice.” I said, stepping back against the wall and he scoffed.
“You always have a choice and you chose be stupid.” His anger was growing more apparent.
“Fine! I’m stupid! But I saved someone.” I persisted making him clench his fists.
“And if you keep it up, you’ll be stupid and dead!” He spoke, furrowing his eyebrows.
“Then I’ll be stupid and dead.” I stated.

Jack punched the wall only five inches away from my head. The house shook and he left a hole when he pulled his hand away.

“Get out of my sight.” He snarled.

I knew if I didn’t, his next punch would be at me so I bolted up the stairs and ran into my room. I closed the door and leaned against it, sighing.

“Alex?” Eliza’s timid voice appeared.

I spend my eyes to see her sitting on my bed.

“Hey.” I rasped. She stood up.
“Are you okay?” She whispered.
“I’m fine, don’t worry about me.” I smiled, heading to the bathroom.

I looked in the mirror to see I had bruises all around my neck and a torn lip as well as some bits of drywall in my hair. I washed my face and scrubbed off the blood that had dried as it ran down my chin and shook the white stuff out of my hair.

“You don’t look fine.” She murmured.

I dried my face off and sighed. I really wanted to tell her what I was and explain that I can handle a lot more physical and emotional pain than humans, but Jack would probably kill her if I did.

“Listen, Eliza. I can handle a lot okay? Believe me, I’ve gotten worse than just a torn lip and some bruises. I’ll be fine.” I smiled.

She sighed and reluctantly nodded. I pulled her into my arms for a warm hug. At the end of the day, I didn’t regret taking that beating and saving her. I knew I’d do it all over again because even though we weren’t related, she was my sister and I’d have died for her.
