The Promise

Alex's p.o.v.

When Jack finally walked into the small café, my heart skipped a few beats and my breathing stopped just for a few seconds.

It was like seeing him all over again on a fresh note.

He looked so beautiful.

Alex, don't even start this bullshit. You're engaged.

And with that simple, harsh reminder, I cut all those thoughts away and focused on him like he was just an ordinary friend.

But he wasn't.

I don't even know if I'm in his good books, let alone his friend.

All that matters, is that he showed up and didn't blow me off ,although that would be nice- STOP .

He made his way over to me, a shy smile on his face, but I could tell he still wasn't so sure of me. I wouldn't blame him, either. I was the one that put him in care for a stupid fucking reason.

He moved his hair out his face, coming to a stop at my table and smiled at me.

"Hey." He greeted, and while I was dying of how nice his voice sounded, I was pushing them thoughts all behind as all I wanted was a stable friendship with Jack and not to fuck it up.

"Hey." I smiled back at him, as he took a seat in front of me.

We kind of just stared at each other, and I could tell Jack was in deep thought. Just by the way his eyebrows move a little closer and how faint wrinkles showed up on his forehead.

He soon shook out of it when the women at the counter said the coffees were ready. I got up, letting Jack recover from whatever was going on in his little head. I grabbed the drinks, and carefully made my way back to the table and placed the drinks on the table.

"Um, I got coffee, is that okay?" I asked, not remembering if Jack liked coffee or not, seeing as it has been fucking years since we've spoke.

"Yeah, that's fine. Thank you." He grinned, grabbing his coffee and taking a little sip. Still the mannered Jack from when I knew him.

After that, we fell into another silence. Not too comfortable. Not too awkward.

I decided to bring up the reason why we were both sat here, in a lonely, small café, sipping our coffees quietly. I didn't want silence anymore.

"I'm sorry."

Was all I said, and I let it float in the air, like a lighten lantern, slowly drifting off.

Jack lifted his head up from where he was staring down at the dim coffee. He frowned a bit, almost like he didn't want me to say what I did, and let out a sigh.

"Okay."

And there it was again, the silence. This time it was awkward, and not comfortable at all. I felt like an idiot. I obviously wasn't meant to say what I did. Jack was staring back down at his cup, slowly swirling the coffee around the cup by moving the cup in tiny, slow circles.

We both felt the tension, and we both didn't like it. I knew this, of course, but I didn't know how to break it. It was killing me, because if I don't break this thick force of tension, then I might lose Jack forever, and I don't want that to ever happen. Never again.

I was about to open my mouth to say something when Jack started getting up.

"Sorry, Alex. I really have to get going. Thanks for the coffee." He mumbled, then started walking off.

No. No!

"Jack, I-" I didn't know what to say, so I quickly caught up with him, stopping him before he walled out the café door. He quickly shoved off my hand that was on his arm, giving me a glare, before opening the café door and leaving.

Don't let this happen again. You've watched him go away before and it was the worst thing that had possibly ever happened to you. Don't let him do this again.

I quickly rushed out the café, looking both ways to see Jack turning into the alley beside the café. I quickly went after him, turning the corner to the alley.

"Jack!" I called, seeing him near his car. I ran down the rest of the alleyway and quickly to Jack, pushing his back against the car.

"Don't leave me."
