I woke up the next morning to the smell of coffee, I opened my eyes and Jack was still sound asleep next to me. I carefully got out of bed and pulled on my scrub pants and made my way down to the kitchen.
“Is that a new bra?” Ana asked
I looked down at my sports bra.
“Uhh, I don’t remember.” I said
She laughed and smiled.
“I smell coffee.” An unfamiliar male voice said
I looked over to the kitchen door was and Xavier was walking in in his boxers.
“Well good morning.” He said to me.
“Morning?” I said confused looking at Ana.
“He was here when Jack brought you home.” She said
“Ohh.” I said
Xavier got coffee and retuned to wherever he came from.
“So.” Ana said
“So?” I asked
“How was it?” She asked
“What?” I asked
“You know, last night. We both heard you.” She said
“Oh my god… really?” I asked
“Yeah.” She laughed
I held my face in my hands.
“So how was it?” She asked again
“Well you know that saying ‘guitars finger faster’?” I asked
“Yes.” She said
“It’s pretty true.” I said
“So all that noise was just from that? Not having sex?” She asked
“Yeah.” I said
“Damnn, I’m going to have to find me a guitar player.” She chuckled.
“Not that one because he’s mine.” I said
“What are you two any ways?” She asked
“I’m his girlfriend.” I said
“When did this happen?” She asked
“Before all of the noise. He asked me to be his date to this fancy dinner banquet and I was grumbling about not wanting to go and he said he already kind of thinks of me as I girlfriend so I brought it up last night and poof. Relationship.” I said
“Awe cute.” She said
“I’m excited Ana, I haven’t been in a relationship since Todd.” I said
“I know girly, and I also know that Jack won’t lay a hand on you in a violent way.” She said
“God I hope not.” I said pouring the coffee into my special mug.
“Jack do you plan on hitting Aussie?” Ana asked
“Um no?” He questioned
“Have you ever hit a girl?” She asked
“Does my sister count?” He asked
“Yes.” She said
“Then yes, I have. I’ve hit my sister in the face with a tennis racket when I was six.” He said
I laughed loudly and Ana just glared at him.
“No I have never hit a girl that wasn’t my sister when I was younger. I do no plan on ever laying a hand on Aussie like that and yes I know if I break her heart you’re going to break my balls.” He said
“No, I’ll cut them off and then break your penis.” She said
“I don’t plan on breaking her heart.” He said
I smiled.
“Want some coffee Jack?” I asked
“Black please.” He said
“You two are disgusting with your back coffees.” Ana said walking out of the room
I slid jack his cup across the island counter and he took it and took a sip of it.
“Why does this have a weird taste?” He asked
“We like to put other things in the coffee filter with the coffee. What do you taste?” I asked
“Mint, I think.” He said
“What kind?” I asked
“Peppermint?” He asked
“Spearmint leaves in the coffee filter.” I smiled
“It’s kind of nice.” He said
“We’ve tried a lot of things.” I said
“Bacon?” He asked
“Yes and it was absolutely disgusting. But our bacon infused whiskey is awesome.” I said
He just smiled and walked around the island to me. He put his hand on the small of my back and pulled me close, placing a soft kiss on my lips.
“Good morning.” He smiled.
“Very good morning.” I said
“What’s on your agenda today?” He asked
“I’ve got nothing.” I said
“I don’t have anything until later, I have to go see my mom. She wants to check up on me and she called the army.” He said
I chuckled and my work phone started ringing.
“Looks like you’ve got something.” Jack pouted.
“Hey Nyla what’s up?” I asked
“Well it’s nothing serious just this fifteen year old boy with a large gash in his side. He needs surgery and I think you might want to do it or at least come look at it.” She said
“Why?” I asked
“What’s Jack’s last name?” She asked
“Barakat but what does that have to do with anything.” I said looking up at my boyfriend who was intently staring at me.
“Does he have a younger brother and what is his name?” She asked
“Jack is your brother younger and what is his name?” I asked looking at him.
“Yes and Joe.” He said
“Joe Barakat?” Nyla asked
“Yes.” I said
“It’s him, fifteen year old Joe Barakat is here needing surgery.” She said
“Okay, we’ll be there in five.” I said
I hung up and looked at Jack.
“Get dressed.” I said running up the stairs
He followed me and threw on his clothes from last night and I pulled on my scrub top.
“What’s going on Aussie?” He asked as I was shoving my feet into my shoes as I went down the stairs.
“Joe is on the peds floor.” I said grabbing my keys.
“What happened to him?” He asked taking my keys and rushing out to my car.
“I don’t know but Nyla said he needed surgery and she wants me to do it.” I said
“Surgery?” Jack asked speeding off towards the hospital
“Jack drop me off at the door and meet me in room 215 on the peds floor.” I said
He nodded and I rushed out and ran into the hospital.
“Kevin Jack will be in just let him in it’s an emergency!” I yelled to the security guard
He gave me a nod and I ran for the steps, I hit peds floor and ran to his door way.
“Hi I’m Doctor Ashmore. I’ll be doing your surgery today. May I ask what happened?” I asked trying to catch my breath.
“He was skateboarding and his stupid homemade metal and pressboard ramp slid and he landed on the edge.” I’m guessing who his mom said
“Mind if I look Joe?” I asked
He shook his head in pain and I walked over and pulled up the temporary bandaging.
“Okay this looks worse than it is Mrs. Barakat.” I said
“Joyce please.” She said
“Okay, Joyce. Joe here will still need surgery but it’s a minor one, luckily it’s a clean slice and no organs were harmed. I’m going to go in and get the pressboard pieces out, I’m going to irrigate the wound and staple him up. He can go home with you a few hours after the surgery.” I said
“Thank you Doctor Ashmore.” She said
“Just doing my job.” I smiled
She smiled at me.
“Well Joe, are you ready to get zipped up?” I asked
He nodded and I unhooked him from the heart monitor and rolled him into the elevator. I saw Jack running towards the room. I gave him a look to not say anything to his mom about us without me in the room, he just nodded and pulled her into a hug.
When Joe was prepped for surgery he was taken into my OR and I scrubbed in, when I got in there everything was set up. I looked at my staff and Nyla was standing in the corner, I nodded at her and she nodded back. I got to work on fixing Joe up, when I was done stapling him I cleaned everything up and they took him back to his room.
“You did wonderful.” Nyla said
“Thank you.” I said
“Will you go in a see if Jack is in there?” I asked
“He’s not.” She said peeking into the room.
I nodded and walked into the room and Joe’s mom looked up.
“Everything went well.” I said
She sighed a huge sigh of relief.
“When he wakes up you two are allowed to leave.” I said
“That’s good because I have this dinner with my son all planned out and he said he wants to bring his girlfriend. I can’t wait to meet her, he hasn’t had one in so long and his last one wasn’t right for him.” She said
I chuckled.
“Well if you need anything page Nyla, I wasn’t really supposed to come in today.” I said
“You go enjoy your day off. Thank you again.” She said
I just smiled and walked out of the room running into Jack.
“Hey.” He said
I motioned for him to get out of sight from his mom, we walked around the corner and he kissed me.
“When were you going to tell me that you wanted to bring me to your dinner thing?” I asked
“I wasn’t. I was just going to take you.” He said
I laughed.
“Will you go?” He asked
“Duh.” I said
He smiled down at me a planted a kiss on my forehead.
“I’m heading home, so stop by then they leave and tell me what to wear to formally meet your mom.” I said
“Will do cutie.” He said
I laughed and I walked away from him, when I looked back he was still standing there watching me. I gave him a wave and he winked at me. When I turned around I ran straight into someone making me fall down on my ass.
“Jesus.” I said getting up and dusting off my butt.
“Sorry stranger.” He said
I looked up and it was Alec.
“What do you want?” I asked
“I want to talk.” He said
“About?” I asked
“What the hell do you think I want to talk about!” He yelled
“Keep your damn voice down, there are sick kids all around you.” I said
He just looked down at me.
“Don’t look down at me like you’re my boss Alec.” I said
He sighed.
“I want to see a picture of her, I want to know what she looked like.” He said
I pulled out my phone and opened it, I pulled up my Lizzi album and showed him.
“She’s gorgeous.” He said
“I know.” I said
“We made that.” He said
“I know.” I said
“So, Aussie. Are you seeing that guy?” He asked pointing down the hall.
I looked a jack was standing in the doorway of Joe’s room
“What that guy I kissed in the hallway? Yeah, that’s my boyfriend.” I said
“Oh, never mind then.” He said
“Why?” I asked
“I was going to maybe see if you wanted to go on a date.” He said
“I would have said no anyways.” I said
“Why?” He asked
“I want to move forward with my life not backwards. If I did happen to be single I wouldn’t be able to look at your face that many times in my life. Could you imagine looking up from your dinner or something and seeing your dead daughter staring you in the face? She looked like you, with my hair.” I said
“But we were meant to be, I was torn after you disappeared off the planet. I barley ate, I barley slept.” He said
“See I have a hard time believing that. Anyways I have to get home.” I said
He shrugged and I stepped around him and walked towards the elevators, when I got on the one that came Xavier was standing there in his peach scrubs.
“Do those scrubs make you feel manly?” I asked
He just playfully shoved me into the elevator wall.
“Who gave you the right to do that?” I asked
“I’m dating your BFF.” He said
“Don’t you ever say BFF again?” I said
He just chuckled and we rode the elevator in silence, when it hit the lobby I got off and speed walked to my car. On the way home I stopped at Taco bell for Ana and me and then I sped home.
“I bought tacos!” I yelled walking in the front door.
“TACOS?!” She yelled
“From the Bell.” I said
“Ouh! You are an awesome person.” She said
“Movie?” I asked
“Yess.” She said
“I love having days off.” I said
“Then why are you in scrubs?” she asked
“Jack’s little brother came in and Nyla wanted me to do the surgery.” I said
“What happened to him?” She asked getting her tacos out.
“One of his makeshift skateboard ramps slid out from the board and he landed on his side and it sliced through him.” I said
“Ew.” She said flipping on a movie channel.
“So I fixed him and I’m going to dinner with Jack tonight.” I said
“Does his mom know he’s dating you?” She asked taking a bite.
“Nope.” I said
“Good luck. Hey your favorite movie is on.” She said
I looked up and smiled as the opening scene to La Bamba was playing.
“Mac!” I yelled out.
A minute later I heard his little bell on his collar jingling, he walked in and jumped up into my lap. I pet him and ate my tacos while he purred on my lap. When the movie was almost over there was a knock on the door.
“Come in Jack!” Ana yelled
The front door opened and then closed, Jack walked in and stared at us, then at the discarded taco bell trash on the floor.
“I got you a burrito.” I smiled
He smiled at me and sat down at my feet; taking them into his lap.
“Thank you.” He said
“Shh, let the movie end.” I said
He looked up at the tv and we were at the part where they were announcing who died in the plane crash and Bob was working on his car.
“Wow, this movie.” He said in a tone
“I’d be careful when insulting this movie.” Ana said
“Why?” He asked
“It’s your girlfriend’s favorite.” She said
I felt him look over at me but I wasn’t going to look at him, just my movie. When it ended I looked at him and he was still staring at me.
“I’m sorry for insulting your movie.” He said
“Go ahead, because I will insult yours.” I said
“What’s his?” Ana asked
“Home Alone.” I said
Ana chuckled.
“Well let’s go get you dressed for my mom.” He said
I nodded watching him go up the stairs, when I finally got up I picked up my car and walked up with him.
“Is this the famous oogie boogie?” Jack asked with our fluffy white cat in his arms.
“Yes, and this is my baby Mac and Cheese.” I said
He smiled and set Ana’s cat down and we walked into my bedroom.
“Thank you for fixing Joe.” He said
“It is my job.” I smiled
“But I know you also did it for me. I think you’re the only peds doctor I would trust with my family. Well Nyla but only if you can’t.” He said
“Aw, Jack.” I said setting my cat down.
I walked over him and wrapped my arms around his waist and cuddled into his chest.
“So what did Alec want?” He asked
“He wanted to see what Lizzi looked like, and to see if I was with you.” I said
“You said yes right?” He asked
“No.” I said looking up at him through my eye lashes.
He looked down at me and I just smiled.
“Can I see her?” He asked
I smiled and nodded.
“Come over here.” I said
He smiled and followed me over to the big chair in the corner of my room, he sat down and I plopped myself down in his lap and pulled my phone out.
“Did she have red hair?” He asked
I shook my head and pulled up her album on my phone.
“She was all Alec in the face.” I said showing him.
“Actually, I see more of you. She was beautiful and I think she would be just like you with darker hair.” He said
“She was very into art the entire time, I know a lot of little kids like art but she loved it. I kept everything she ever made and as she got older it got better, she drew this horse and it actually looks like a horse.” I said
“She would have been an art student. The art student with the surgeon mother.” He said kissing my temple.
“I don’t think I would be one if she were here.” I said
“Why?” He asked
“It’s a lot of time away from home, I wouldn’t have gotten to see her grow up. I wouldn’t have been a waitress like I was but not something as time consuming as being a surgeon.” I said
“What do you think your relationship with her would have been?” He asked
“The perfect mother daughter one.” I said
“Like the mother daughter relationship in Gilmore Girls?” He asked
I laughed
“Yes….” I chuckled.
“May used to watch it all the time.” He said
“I own all seven seasons.” I laughed
He laughed and squeezed me,
“You should get ready.” He said
“What should I wear?” I asked
“Something comfy, cute, and casual. Something you.” He said
“I think I’ve got the prefect thing. I’ll try it on for you.” I said
I got off his lap and walked to my closet, I grabbed my clothes and skipped into the bathroom and stripped and got redressed. http://www.polyvore.com/meeting_parents/set?id=143032827
I walked back out and dug under the bed for my shoes and then I spun in a circle.
“This?” I asked
“Yes, I like it.” She said
“Do you like me?” I smiled
“Of course I do.” He said getting out of the chair and walking over to me.
He pulled me into his and squeezed me.
“You wouldn’t be meeting my family if I didn’t.” He said
I pushed him away and pulled on the shoulders of his shirt so he was at my level, I pushed my lips against his and wrapped my arms around his neck. He chuckled and pulled away.
“Ready?” He asked
“No.” I said
“You met her today.” He said
“I met her as Doctor Ashmore, not Aussie Jo Ashmore.” I said
“You’re the same person.” He smiled
I just smiled and he took my hand and led me down the stairs.
“Ana I’ll be back later.” I said
“Him too?” She asked
“No, I’m going to drop her off and go to my apartment.” He said
She nodded and waved us on.
“You’re allowed to come back.” I said when we got into the car.
“I know but I have a dog I need to take care of.” He said
“Understood.” I said
We drove on and pulled up in front of his mom’s house.
