Mustn't Fall for the Patient

Three weeks passed since the passing of our boards and I was slammed with shit, Ana had all of her payments due this month so I was on our rent on my own which meant extra hours in trauma and the clinic on top of my fellowship.
I was in the ER helping with traumas when Nyla paged me about one of our patients; Alex. I made my way to the Peds floor and Nyla was standing in his doorway, he wasn’t in there.
“Surgery day.” I sighed
“Surgery day. We’ve got to monitor him over night and hopefully he’ll pull though.” She said
“No, he will pull though.” I yawned
“How long have you been here?” She asked
“This is day four I’m pretty sure.” I said
“Jesus Aussie, you need to go home sometimes.” She said
“I will after I know Alex is okay.” I said
“Okay, but if any time today or tonight you need to go hom you come tell me.” She said
I nodded and smiled.
“Page me when he’s out. Seven hours right?” I asked
“At the least.” She said
“Is Ana in there with Chris?” I asked
“No, she had a different patient. I think she’s roaming now, he didn’t want her in there for this.” She said
I nodded.
“Well I’ve got to get back down to the ER.” I said
“Have fun.” She said
I laughed and made my way back down to the first floor.
“Anything for me?” I asked
“You can go stitch this guy’s arm up. He cut it on some piping so he’ll need a tetanus too.” A nurse told me
I nodded and walked over to curtain five and threw it open, the guy looked so familiar.
“I’m Doctor Ashmore.” I said
He just nodded, I got out the suture kit and the tetanus shot. I prepped his arm and started stitching.
“So how’d this happen?” I asked
“I was at work and I stuck my hand down a pipe that was rusting out. I wasn’t expecting there to be pieces that would cut me.” He said
“Always expect the unexpected.” I said
He chuckled.
“What’s your name?” I asked finishing up with everything
“Alec Swanson.” He said
My eyes grew wide and darted down to my wrist tattoo. Elizabeth Joelle Swanson. I stared at it for a good two minutes.
“Alec Swanson?” I asked
He nodded and took my arm to see what I was looking at, I jerked it away and got up and started walking away.
“Ashmore.” He said more to himself.
I saw him talk to another doctor and he looked up at me and ran towards me. I started jogging and he caught my arm.
“Aussie?” He asked
I bit my lower lip.
“What the hell? You disappeared on us…” He said
“I didn’t have a choice.” I said
“What do you mean you didn’t have a choice? They loved you, it broke their hearts when you ran away in the middle of the night. For fucks sake I loved you.” He said
“They may have loved me as one of their own but they were hardcore religious and didn’t have any room in their life for a pregnant teen. Remember that speech?” I asked
“Yeah but.” He stopped mid-sentence.
He grabbed my wrist and read it.
“We have a daughter?” He asked
“Had.” I said pointing to the second date.
“She died?” He asked
“Terribly.” I said
“Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked
“I didn’t think you’d care. You were that teenage boy who would have walked away.” I said
“Okay that may be true but, I at least had the right to know.” He said
“I understand that, but I did what I thought I had to do. I didn’t think we would ever see each other again.” I said
“I see that you think happy thoughts.” He said
I rolled my eyes and he picked up my arm and I just jerked it away.
“Everything okay?” I heard someone ask.
I looked over and it was Alex.
“Yeah, all good. I’ll be up to his room on my way back to my floor.” I said
He nodded and he and Lisa walked away.
“Was that Alex from?” He asked with me cutting him off.
“Yes.” I said
“You know him?” He asked
“It’s been recent.” I said
He just nodded.
“Look Alec, I’m not sorry for not telling you about her but I am sorry about how you found out. You would have loved her.” I said
“I bet I would have. But I’m sure her passing was out of your control.” He said
“If you want to visit her grave she’s buried by my mother.” I said
He nodded.
“Thank you. And congratulations by the way.” He said
“For what?” I asked
“You’re a fucking doctor.” He said
“Pediatric surgeon.” I said
“Nice.” He said
“Well I have lives to save.” I said
He nodded and I turned around and ran away from him, I reached Jacks room and my hands were shaking and I was almost in tears.
“Whoa Auss what’s wrong?” Jack asked
“Was it that guy who was harassing you?” Alex asked
“Someone was harassing her?” Jack asked
“Aussie, sweetie who was that?” Lisa asked
“Alec Swanson. Alec fucking Swanson.” I said kicking the glass door.
“The Alec Swanson?” Lisa asked
I nodded and she got up from her chair and pulled me into a hug.
“Who?” Jack asked
“Elizabeth’s father.” I said
“Why was he here?” Lisa asked
“Getting his arm stitched up. He got a cut at work.” I said
“So he found out about Lizzi?” Jack asked
“Yes.” I said
“Are you okay?” He asked
“I will be, I have to go be with a patient.” I said
“Okay, I’ll be here if you need me.” Jack said
“I know.” I smiled.
He blew me a kiss, I caught it and blew on back; he caught it.
“That was disgusting.” Alex said
Lisa slapped him.
“It was damn cute.” She said
I smiled and walked up to my floor
“Hey girl.” Nyla said
“Hey. How is he?” I asked
“Fantastic, his stats are good.” She said
“He’s a tiny human, he’ll get through this.” I mumbled.
“Was that a pep talk to yourself?” She asked
I nodded and she smiled.
“It’s late, turn your pager up and go to sleep in the on call room.” She said
“I want to make rounds around here first.” I said
“Okay, Miss Olivia said she missed you during pre-rounds this morning.” She said
“Then I guess I’ll just have to go see her.” I said
Nyla smiled and we walked in different directions, I walked up to six year old Olivia’s room and tapped on the door lightly. She looked up from her Barbie’s and smiled.
“I heard you missed me this morning.” I said
“I did.” She smiled
I walked in and sat cross legged across from her on the bed.
“You colored on your Ariel doll?” I asked
“I gave her pretty tattoos, she’s you.” She said
“Where did you get those tiny scrubs?” I asked
“Doctor Nyla brought my mom an extra scrub shirt like the one you wear and she made it into Barbie scrubs.” She said
“She’s beautiful.” I said
“Doctor Nyla told me about your boyfriend so I made Prince Eric into him.” She smiled
“That’s so cool. Do you have a Nyla doll?” I asked
She leaned over the bed and pulled up a Bell doll with the hair cut short.
“I like her.” I said
“Thank you.” She smiled.
“So Miss. Olivia how are you feeling?” I asked
“I don’t feel as icky as I did yesterday.” She said
“That’s good, most people feel very icky for weeks after chemo.” I said
“Well I have been on it for a few months.” She said
“You have a very good point.” I said
“Do you want to play dolls with me?” She asked
“I sure would, but only for a little bit. I haven’t been sleeping well.” I smiled
“Are you having nightmares? I have a lot of nightmares.” She said
“Not this time, just a lot of work. I do have nightmares a lot though. You can always talk to me about them.” I said
She smiled and we played dolls for a good three hours until we were both pretty tired.
“Sleep well, I will see you next time I come in.” I said
“You sleep well too.” She said
I kissed her forehead and tucked her in before I made my way down the hall to the on call room, as soon as my head hit the pillow I was out.
“I want you to come to this fancy dinner with me.” Jack said waking me up from my on-call room slumber.
“Jack I was sleeping.” I said opening one eye.
He just looked at me with his perfect almond shaped brown eyes.
“I want you to be my date Aussie.” He said
I smiled though my sleeping fog.
“Can’t date patients, hospital policy.” I grumbled
“Auss I haven’t been your patient for weeks and I was discharged today which means I’m not even a patient in this hospital.” He said
I rolled over and faced the wall.
“Congratulations.” I groaned.
“Plus we’ve been kind of dating for a while now, I kind of consider you my girlfriend in a way.” He mumbled.
I rolled back over and smiled at him, he smiled down at me and I pulled him into a laying position and kissed him.
“Aussie. Will you please be my date to this banquet?” He asked pouting out his bottom lip.
“I don’t know what to wear to a fancy banquet.” I said
“But Lisa does, she’ll help you. I’ve already talked to her.” He said
I smiled over at him, he was so cute.
“Okay.” I said
“Really?” He asked
“Really.” I smiled
He pulled me close to him and kissed my nose.
“When is it?” I asked into his neck
“Friday night.” He said
“Okay.” I said
He pushed me away and looked at me.
“When was the last time you went home?” He asked
“Three or four days ago. I have this kid that I have to monitor, he just got three tumors removed from his temporal lobe. And I’m clocking in extra hours in trauma and the clinic to pay my rent because Ana can’t help this month. I can’t go home.” I said with my breathing getting heavier
“Shh, Aussie calm down. It’s okay, it’s okay.” He said pulling me back to him and stroking my hair.
I took deep breaths and breathed in his sent.
“You smell good.” I said
“I smell like hospital.” He chuckled
“No, it’s more of a vanilla musky sent.” I said
I could tell he had his look of confusion on his face but I didn’t care, I snuggled in closer to him and he wrapped himself around me and kissed the top of my head.
“Let me take you home, just talk to Nyla I’m sure she’ll understand.” He said
“I know she will but my rent.” I said
“I will help you.” He said
“I don’t want you to do that, you don’t have too.” I said
“I know I don’t have to, I want too. You mean so much to me Aussie, I don’t want to see you have a breakdown from not sleeping well. I know you’re a Peds surgeon now, but even superheroes have to sleep.” He said
“Okay, wait here.” I said
“I’ll be right here when you get back.” He said
I crawled over him and out of bed, I left the room and walked into the room I knew Nyla would be in.
“Aussie, what are you doing here?” He asked
“I have to monitor Alex, you told me to.” I said
“Oh sweetheart. I paged you to go home about an hour ago. You look like hell.” She said
“I didn’t get a page.” I said
“He didn’t make it.” She said
“He was doing so well.” I said
“I know, but you know how it is. Things go bad so fast.” She said
“I need to talk to the parents.” I said
“I already did, now go home.” She said pulling me into a hug.
“I let down another tiny human.” I sobbed.
“No, you did great. You’re doing great, you’re going to be fantastic with the tiny humans.” She said
I just sobbed and I felt familiar hands grab me away.
“Jack take her home.” Nyla said
“I will.” He said
My feet left the floor and I wrapped my arms around his neck.
“Should you be lifting heavy things?” I asked
“You’re not heavy and I’m fine.” He said
I continued to sob into his neck.
“What kind of car does she drive?” He asked Nyla.
“2001 Chevy Impala, it’s burgundy.” She said
Jack started to walk away and when I zoned back in he was setting me in my car.
“How’d you unlock it?” I asked
“I have your keys.” He said
I just nodded and folded myself up into the seat, he shut the door and climbed into the driver’s side.
“Lisa texted me your address. Don’t worry you’ll be home soon.” He said taking off out of the parking lot.
The drive was familiarly long and when he pulled into the driveway I was pretty much asleep. He pulled me out of the car and carried me up to the door kicking it with his foot.
“Jesus hold on!” I head Ana yell.
She opened the door and gave him a funny look.
“I’ll explain in a minute, I need to get her up to bed. Will you show me the way?” he asked
I don’t know if she answered I just heard the door shut and Jack moving.
“Thank you.” Jack said laying me down on my bed
“You’re welcome.” Ana said
I looked up and she gave me a smile and walked away closing the door.
“I’ll call you tomorrow Auss.” Jack said kissing my forehead and walking towards the door.
“Jack.” I said sitting up
“Yeah?” He asked
“Please stay.” I said
He smiled and walked back over to my bed kicking his shoes off.
“Are you sure?” He asked
“Yeah.” I smiled
He pulled me to him and kissed my forehead.
“You stopped crying.” He said
“I’m too tired to cry.” I said
He smiled down at me and leaned down to kiss me but I stopped him.
“Hey Jack.” I said
“Yeah Auss?” He asked
“I would absolutely love to be your girlfriend.” I said
“Yeah?” He questioned
“Only if you want to be my boyfriend.” I said
“Jesus Christ. Who wouldn’t?” He asked
“So are we dating now?” I asked
“We’ve been dating, it started with the picnic. I’m thinking relationship.” He said
“Can we still go on dates? Because I have to show off my handsome boyfriend.” I laughed.
“Of course, how else am I supposed to show my super beautiful girlfriend off?” He said
“I like this arrangement.” I said
“Can I kiss you now?” He asked
I pulled his face down to mine and pressed my lips to his, he smiled into the kiss and traced my lips with his tongue. I let him enter and his tongue played tag with mine, when we pulled away for air I looked at him and yawned.
“Sleep.” He said
“You too?” I asked
“Yeah.” He smiled
He moved back to his spot leaning against the headboard. I pulled off scrub top and long sleeve shirt off leaving me in my sports bra with my regular bra under it. Jack coughed and I looked over at him, he was staring at me.
“Carry on, get comfy.” He said
“You too.” I said
He nodded and pulled off his shirt, I pulled my regular bra out from under my sports bra and threw it across the room leaving me in my scrub pants and sports bra.
I looked over at Jack and she was standing up shimming out of his jeans, I bit my lip smiling as I watched him. He looked down at me and plopped back into bed, he rolled over to me and onto me to straddle my waist. He leaded down and kissed me softly on the lips and then moved down to my neck. I groaned and he chuckled continually moving down, when he got to my stomach his started leaving open kisses down to my pant line. My heart was racing and I thought about stopping him but I couldn’t move, I unconsciously lifted my hips helping him pull my pants off. He pulled my panties down to my lower thighs, as I was thinking about stopping him he nipped at my inner thigh. I yelped and he just chuckled, my core pulsed in anticipation and my heart was pounding faster than it had ever done before. As I was trying to calm my heart down he pressed his tongue against my heat, my hips bucked and he twirled his tongue around making me want to scream out his name but Ana was home. He stopped and started to kiss back up my stomach pulling my panties back up in the process, he kissed my lips and I groaned.
“You’re a fucking TEASE!” I squealed because he plunged two fingers deep into me.
I held in my moans to keep Ana from hearing us but as is fingers probed faster and he was nipping my neck I couldn’t hold them in anymore. As I was reaching my climax he covered my mouth with his to quiet me down.
“Where did that come from?” I asked as he kissed me one last time and returned to his spot next to me.
He chuckled and shrugged, I smiled and rolled over onto my side and laid my leg over his and my head on his chest.
“Wow.” I sighed.
He laughed again and we fell asleep tangled in one another.
