Welcome To My Life

“There you are!” I heard a happy voice behind me.
I turned to find Jenna standing behind us. “You disappeared so quickly after class.”
“Yeah, I’ve got Jack to thank for that” I sighed.

“Are you and him related? You know, same last name?” she asked curiously as she sat down next to us.
I nodded. “Yeah, he’s my cousin.”
“You poor thing” she replied.
“You don’t like him either?” I asked.
Jenna nodded. “He enjoys making fun of me. My hair, the way I dress, the way I act, anything I do really.”

“Ugh” I sighed. “How lucky am I, having to live with him and his parents.”
“Seriously?” Jenna asked raising her eyebrows. “Well, you’re always welcome to come hang at my place when he’s giving you a hard time.”
“Thanks, I’ll take you up on that” I replied.

Alex suddenly got up and walked away.
“Uhm… bye?” I shouted after him, until I noticed he was walking up to Jack.
“I really wish Alex wouldn’t do anything Jack wants him to do” I told Jenna.
“Yeah well, it’s always been like that. Jack is rather controlling and used to having his way and Alex just wants to please everyone, including Jack. The guy’s too nice for his own good.” Jenna explained.

“Anyway, where are you from?” I asked Jenna to change the subject. “You don’t sound American.”
“Australia” she replied. “My parents and I moved here about two years ago.”
“Awesome, I’d love to go there someday. It seems like such a nice country” I said.
“It is, it’s beautiful” Jenna replied.
“Do you miss it?” I asked her.
“Yeah sometimes” she nodded, suddenly falling silent and looking up at something behind me.

“Can I talk to you?” I heard a voice behind me, which I recognized to be Jack’s.
“No” I said shortly, without even turning to look at him.
“Liz.” Jack said sternly.
“I said no, Jack” I replied as I felt anger growing inside me.
“Please?” he asked, as he must have realized I wouldn't let him tell me what to do.
I was so done with him, already. I jumped up and turned to face him. I noticed Alex standing a few feet behind him.

“God dammit Jack, I said no. I know you’re not used to ever hearing that from your mommy and daddy but you better get used to it” I snarled.
He seemed taken aback by my violent tone, but I couldn’t care less.

“I just wanted to apologize” Jack muttered, his arrogant glance disappearing.
“Oh I bet you do. Did Alex threaten you or something?” I asked him annoyed.
“Look Liz, I know we don’t exactly get along…” Jack started.
I cut him off. “Really? And whose fault is that?”
“But I crossed the line with what I said about your parents” Jack continued as if I hadn’t interrupted him.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Yeah whatever Jack. Next time you say something about my parents, you won’t be so lucky. Now move along.”
Jack gave me one last look, sighed and turned around. He and Alex walked back into the building, after Alex gave me one last glance.

“Nice!” Jenna exclaimed, holding her hand up for me to high five her, which I did.
“It’s good to know we finally have someone around here who actually dares to stand up to Jack. No one really does, even though he bullies a lot of people.” Jenna explained.
“Well, I suppose things are about to change around here” I said winking.
“Can’t wait” Jenna said smiling.

The school bell rang, announcing we had to go to our next class.
“What do you have now?” Jenna asked.
“Uhm… Biology” I replied.
“Cool, me too” Jenna said, much to my relief.
“I do have to go get my books though” I said.
We both got up and headed inside. Since I rushed outside after my talk with Jack, I hadn’t gone to my locker yet to get my books.
“Okay, I’ll come with you” Jenna replied.
