It's Such A Shame That We Play Strangers

Chapter 2

After an hour of putting my stuff away in drawers, making my bed and snooping in Mr Jack Barakat's stuff, it was time for me to find my way back to the office.

Making my way back to the office, I notice the different groups which congregate with each other.

The first group I walked past was your jock looking kids, they were tall, muscly and looked scary. It was kind of like Zack, yet I'm pretty sure Zack wouldn't hurt a fly. I think.

Next we have your smart kids. Scoring A+ on everything they did, except sport. Or maybe even that. I don't know. I'm not like that.

As I was looking at the group with very pansy looking guys, I heard commotion from behind me, which in a normal person's reaction is to turn around and look. And that is exactly what I did.

Well, that proves my point of the jocks looking scary. They were holding this kid up by his shirt against the wall. He was so scared, that his hands were beginning to shake. I would have gone over and helped, but this is the new me. Every time I tried to help someone in situations like this, I always ended up twice as hurt as the person getting picked on, would have been.

'Please..' The kid whimpered. The jock just laughed and dropped him to the floor. Most people that were watching began to walk away and act as if they didn't see anything. Again, I was one of those people.

I finally made my way to the office and walked through the door. I walked to the desk and looked over to see Josie doing work.

'Hi. I'm here to see the principal.' I said, startling her and making her jump.

'Oh dear.' She said, looking up and placing her hand over her heart.

'Sorry.' I apologised.

'It's okay. Just go down the hall there and take a seat. He won't be long.' She pointed down the hall. I nodded my head and walked where she directed.

As I was seated, I studied the pictures on the wall with all the excelling students in the past years that have gone by. As I read along the names, I come across one that I have thought about and heard many times. Jack Barakat.

I quickly find the third row, counting along the sits until I come to number 8's seat. There, in the picture, was sat a skunk headed boy. He smiled in the picture like he was born for it.

While staring at the picture, I finally heard the door open to the office. I turned my head to see the principal walk out.

'Okay, I'll see you next week Jack.' The principal said. I kept looking that way and saw that exact same boy, who was in the picture, walk out of the room. He nodded his head and began to walk, head down as he dragged his feet. I watched as he walked right in front of me and the around the corner.

'Ah, Mr Gaskarth. If you'll follow me please.' The principal spoke, pulling me from my gaze. I nodded my head and followed him to his office, closing the door behind me.

'My name is Mr Stevens. Please, have a seat.' I gestured to the chair. I followed his gesture and sat down in the chair.

'So, what do you think so far, Alex?' He questioned.

'Well, it's been good, so far. On my way here though, one of the bigger guys was picking on one of the younger ones. That was a bit different, I guess.' I answered.

'Oh, that happens a lot. We try our best to stop it, but we can't seen to stop it. So, I wanted to talk to you about your room mate.' Mr Stevens spoke grabbing my attention. I hadn't even met the boy but I was addicted to him. He was full of mystery and I was really intrigued.

'Jack Barakat?' I questioned.

'Yes. Now, his past is not the best. With losing Tyler and with family issues, Jack is a very sensitive boy. As of what I want from you, it is to befriend Jack. Try break him from his shell he has seemed to pull himself into. I've seen some of the other boys talk to him, but he doesn't talk. I would love to see him start playing guitar again, he was really talented.' Mr Stevens explained.

'You want me try and befriend him? What if he doesn't want to be my friend sir? Then what happens?' I questioned.

'You keep trying. From reading your reports and files, it tells me you are very chatty. And seeing as he is your room mate now. I think it is best you try. Okay.' He replied.

'Okay. Is this all you wanted to talk to me about?' I questioned.

'One other thing. You need to go get changed before you go to your classes. You are to wear uniform between the hours of 8:30am til 5pm.' He replied.

'You've got it sir.' I said, standing from my chair.

'I hope I don't have to see you again, for bad behaviour.' Mr Stevens said, standing from his chair and extending his hand out. I shook it before walking around the chair and out the door.

I hurried back to my room to finally meet Jack. The boy who is one new puzzle piece, eventually finding a place in this world.
