Letters To Alex

lethargy

“Wakey wakey eggs and bakey!” Kylie called throughout the house, over the sound of pans clanging and bacon frying.

“SHUT UP!” Jack screamed back twice as loud from his room. Jack had never really been a morning person, you could count on him to leave his room sometime after 1.

“I’M GOING TO DUMP YOUR COFFEE IN YOUR PANTS, YOU ASSHOLE!” Kylie responded, before dropping the pan back on the stove. “AND IT’S NICE AND HOT!”

Jack’s door opened quickly, and he soon appeared in the kitchen.

“You wouldn’t.” He grumbled in a low tone.

Kylie squinted her eyes as she grabbed the coffee pot.

“Try me, Barakat.” She threatened through gritted teeth.

“How about the both of you shut up!” Alex groaned from the couch, rubbing his eyes as he sat up. He then yawned, and checked his phone. It was 9:48. “It’s too early for either of you to be so loud.” He said through another yawn.

“Alex, it’s like 10.” Kylie replied, looking over at him.

“Right,” He spoke softly, “Too early.” He then laid back down on couch, covering his face.

“What time did you go to bed last night dude?” Jack questioned, scratching the back of his head.

“Late.” Alex said flatly. He hasn’t been sleeping well for the past few days. One, because Jack’s couch not only smelled weird, it was not very comfortable to sleep on. And two, he couldn’t stop thinking about Delilah. He wasn’t exactly over her, but he got to a point where he could still be happy with himself, and it only hurt on certain nights when he was alone.

That didn’t mean he entirely forgot about her and their memories, it just meant that he was able to cope.

But now, since Kylie got the thought of her in his head again, it wasn’t going anywhere. And the lingering pressure of having to tell her what happened only made it worse.

"I see," Jack said softly, "Okay."

He understood what his best friend was going through, because he had been by his side to help him through it. He knew that Alex was probably rocking with anxiety with Kylie being here, because he'd have to tell her soon. He knew that Alex was already weak, and this only made him weaker. He knew that this wasn't the first time he lost sleep over the flame haired girl. And he knew that this was not going to be the last.

"Is Alex oka-?" Kylie began to question, only for Jack to wave her off.

"He's tired, he hasn't been sleeping well." Jack responded, a look of worry washing over his face. Kylie began to frown as she stared at Alex under the sheet.

"He's okay though, just needs rest." He explained, before shuffling back into his room.

...

A few hours later, Alex had awoken to Kylie sitting silently by his feet watching television.

“Hi Kyles,” He yawned, sitting up slightly.

“Hello.” She said back quietly with a smile, glancing to him quickly before returning her vision to the TV. “You still snore as loud as you did in high school.”

Alex sat up all the way, rubbing his eyes as a small laugh came out of his mouth.

“Thank you?”

“Anytime.”

He looked around the house, which was seemingly quiet. Kylie and he appeared to be the only ones there.

“Where’s Jack?” He asked.

“Not home,” Kylie hummed, turning to face him, “He went to get some food. He really needs to grocery shop more often, don’t you think?”

She had a point, Jack was terrible at maintaining a household. When Alex moved in, he did his best of cleaning up everything and filling the fridge at least every two weeks. Why Jack was allowed to buy a three bedroom townhouse on his own, nobody knows. And there wasn’t even three bedrooms, only Jack’s and the guest room. The third room was Jack’s ‘entertainment’ room that was filled with his guitars, an old pool table and air hockey table he got at a random yard sale, and a whole set of junk.

“Didn’t you cook already though?” Alex questioned, peaking in the kitchen. He did remember waking up to the smell of bacon and coffee.

“Yes, I cooked breakfast,” She responded, “But breakfast is eaten at breakfast time. Plus, there’s no more anyway. I ate my share and Jack ate his and yours.”

“What time is it anyway?” Alex rubbed his eyes once more.

Kylie looked at her phone before responding. “4:37.”

“Holy shit…” Alex whispered to himself as he swung his legs off the couch. This was the first time he slept that late since when he first broke up with Delilah.

“It’s okay, relax.” She put her hands on his shoulders as she spoke softly. “We knew you were tired, so neither Jack nor I tried to wake you. If you’re still tired, you can go back to sleep, you know.”

Alex waved his hand in the air as he shook his head. “No no, I’m rested. Thanks, Kyles. I just couldn’t believe I slept that damn long.”

“It’s okay Alex, really,” Kylie laughed slightly, “We all have nights like that.”

A key began to turn in the door, which caused Alex and Kylie to look in that direction.

“Uncle Jack is home with Mexican!” Jack said excitedly as he walked through the doorway with bags in tow.

“Good, I’m starving.” Alex said as he got off the couch, taking the bags from Jack and heading to the kitchen.

“Good morning to you too sleeping beauty,” Jack teased, “When did you arise from your slumber?”

“Not too long ago.” Alex responded. He put the bags on the counter. Jack's footsteps followed him into the kitchen.

"What were you guys talking about?" Jack asked, in reference to Alex and Kylie.

"Not much," Alex removed some tortilla chips from the bag, "Why, are you jealous?" He teased as he notice a pink tint on Jack's cheeks.

"No!" Jack retorted in defense.se with a pout. “Just curious! God, can I not ask a question?”

“Sure you can, anytime you want, Jacko.” Alex smiled with a pat to Jack’s back, before digging in the bag again.

‘Well while you were talking, did you tell her?”

"Alex stopped searching in bag to look up at his friend. He gulped harshly before running his hand through his hair.

"Um, no." He replied softly, feeling stomach churn.

Jack sighed. "You're going to have to some time, Alex."

They both knew that Kylie couldn't walk around around not knowing anything of what happened. Plus, it'd be devastating if she found out from someone else besides Alex, since he already lied to her.

"I know."
....

"So then," Kylie said as she chewed her food, "He had the nerve to ask me on a second date. A SECOND date, can you believe that?" She was ranting about her rather unsuccessful dating life again.

"Oh my gosh really?? How totally ridiculous!" Jack replied sarcastically as he ate his enchilada.

"Fucking fight me Jack." She growled, narrowing her eyes at him.

"I will, Kylie. I'll kick your little ass." He smirked.

"I hate the two of you." Alex muttered under his breath with an eye roll.

"And how's your dating life going, Jacko? Do you even talk to girls anymore?" She taunted.

Jack laughed. "Of course I do, I'm in a world famous band, and I'm cute as fuck."

"I forgot to say your mom doesn't count. Or any other female family member for that matter." She said quickly over him.

"Cheap shot, Reynolds," He looked up at Kylie again, "But I'll let you have that one."

"Also," Jack cleared his throat before adding, "I do not 'date' girls. I'm a big fan of minimal contact, and one night stands."

"Jack, you're almost 27, don't you think you should settle down sometime soon?" Alex questioned, genuinely curious.

"La la la, I can't heeear youuu." Jack sang as he got up. "La la la, I'm going to get another beer la la la."

Kylie and Alex shared a sigh.

"I'm tired of searching in the dating pool, Alex. It's really gross and annoying." Kylie voiced with another sigh.

"I bet so." He responded. He couldn't even say he knew what she meant. The last time Alex dated was in high school, and there was only 2 girls before Delilah.

And if Kylie was right, even though she most likely was, that was all the more reason for Alex not to date again. That was all he needed to hear.

"You're lucky you found your soul mate so early on in life, you know that?" A smile soon appeared on her face. "There's something about you two, and after all these years, I still can't put finger on it. I don't think anyone can. That's what makes you so amazing. There's just something about you two."

Alex felt as if his heart strings had finally collapsed under the unbearable pressure of heart break. His heart dropped to the pit of his stomach, and he instantly felt nauseous. He didn't have anything to say.

Even if he did, he probably wouldn't even be able to speak.

"I miss Delilah, it's been so damn long. I hope she's keeping up with her hair, it takes lots of work." Kylie spoke idly. "You know she doesn't call me anymore? I'm pretty upset about that." A slight frown appeared on her face. Alex still remained silent.

'She doesn't call anyone much anymore these days,' Alex thought to himself. His chest was suddenly really tight.

"What are we talkin bout, dorks?" Jack questioned as he walked into the room with a beer.

"Delilah." Kylie replied. Jack's eyes got really big as he glanced in Alex's direction.

Alex wasn't even paying him any mind.

"I still can't believe she went to see her mom though? Like that doesn't sound like her at all. Not only does she hate Seattle, she hates her mom twice as much."

"Did either of you give her some kind of incentive to go there?" Kylie joked, but still curious of the response. "Like,"

Alex couldn't bear it anymore. He had to tell her. He had to.

He gulped nervously. "Kylie,"

"Mhm?"

"That's, that's not where Delilah is." He replied weakly. His hands begin to tremble.

"Oh, well where is she then?"

"I, I don't know, actually..." Alex could feel a lump in his throat.

Jack sat in silence, watching his pain stricken best friend. He knew this was hard for him.

Kylie was confused. "Wha-what do you mean you don't-?"

"Delilah and I broke up."
